BIBLIOGRAPHY• Birth: Vienna, Austria (1811).• Age 15: Embarked on on a tour of
Italy with his Father.
In Rome von Guérard studied under Giovanni Battista Bassi who was interested in the tradition of the great seventeenth-century landscape artists such as Claude Lorrain and Nicholas Poussin, and who sought ‘truth’ in his landscape painting.
Traditionally landscape painting had been seen as secondary to other genres such as history painting or portraiture.
• Arrived in Australia: 1852 during the Gold Rush.
PRACTICE• Used sketches to help paint landscapes
from memory• Fluid, fast manner• Not waiting for paint to dry• Concentrating on the image small section
by small section• Used a very fine brush and a magnifying
glass to achieve extraordinary detail

PRACTICE•He would ‘cheat’ by including elements in the image that were not actually present in reality, to enhance to success of the composition to circulate the eye of the viewer.
