Vermont’s executive director in late summer, I had the good fortune of being mentored into the position by Amy Cunningham, the outgoing executive director. Through Amy, I learned about the organization’s history and operational rhythms, which contributed to a smooth transition in leadership. During her six-year tenure, Amy worked tirelessly to improve EW! VT’s program quality and the number of children served throughout the state. When Amy became EW! VT’s director in June 2007, our program served 591 children at 17 partner schools throughout the state. By the time she left, we were solidly the state’s largest mentoring organization, providing 670 children in 24 schools with a reading-based mentoring experience. Program growth continued in 2012-13, with the addition of three new sites. The first of these, at Shoreham Elementary School, is the second site we launched under a three-year funding partnership with United Way of Addison County (UWAC). Twinfield Union Elementary School came next, thanks to a new partnership with Twinfield Together Mentoring Program, which was seeking a program for younger students to complement existing middle and high school mentoring activities. Our longtime partner Upper Valley Business and Education Partnership opened our third new Power Lunch site at Sharon Elementary School. Each of these sites helped further our goal of reaching more children in rural schools, and these efforts are continuing in 2013-14 with the launch of two additional sites under the UWAC partnership. Bridport Central School’s program opened in October, and our 26 th reading- mentoring site for 2013-14 is set to open at Vergennes Union Elementary in January. Of course, our mission goes far beyond site expansion. We aim to provide the highest quality experience to the children, volunteers, and schools we serve. By the dictionary, a mentor is defi ned as one who advises or guides someone who has less experience. When I became Everybody Wins! Vermont’s

executive director in late summer, I had the good fortune of being mentored into the position by Amy Cunningham, the outgoing executive director.

The fi rst of these, at Shoreham Elementary School, is the second site we launched under a three-year funding partnership with United Way of Addison County (UWAC). Twinfi eld Union Elementary School came next, thanks to a new partnership with Twinfi eld Together Mentoring Program, which was seeking a program for younger students to complement existing middle and high school mentoring activities.

Bridport Central School’s program opened in October, and our 26th reading-mentoring site for 2013-14 is set to open at Vergennes Union Elementary in January.

Of course, our mission goes far beyond site expansion. We aim to provide the highest quality experience to the children, volunteers, and schools we serve. To that end, among many other activities in 2012-13, our staff worked diligently to: • Recruit, train, and support 205 new mentors across

all of our sites • Implement new mentoring tools we developed

with the Stern Center for Language and Learning to help guide mentor pairs’ time together

• Plan and run literacy evenings for nearly 1,000 mentors, mentees, and mentees’ family members

When One Person Mentors, Two Lives Are Changed

• Help friends, family, and EW! VT participants set an impressive record of 1,303 books read in an hour at our 2013 Read-a-thon—a record we will try to beat at our next read-a-thon in January

• Throw our most successful annual Summer Celebration yet, with 140 guests enjoying great company, excellent food and views from the Mountain Top Inn & Resort, beautiful music by the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and an electrifying fi reworks display

• Begin training on the new, statewide Civicore mentoring database developed by Mobius

• Help create a fantastic new video to showcase our work and to support recruitment and fundraising—check it out at http://vimeo.com/69641007 or link to it from our website at www.ewvt.org

As I think about last year’s accomplishments and look forward to the work ahead, I am excited to be a part of Everybody Wins! Vermont. Because EW! VT has helped thousands of children and adults experience the power of mentoring, it is truly fi tting to have been welcomed into my new role through mentoring. I am thankful and thrilled to be leading such a dedicated team in bringing the power of mentoring to thousands more over the coming years.

My mentor was awesome, nice, sweet, thoughtful, accepting, responsible and whoever gets her next year should be very lucky (I want her as my sister).

Just as we could not run our programs without our mentors, we could not have fulfilled our 2012-13 program goals without the generosity extended by the many businesses, organizations, foundations, and individuals who invested in our mission.

I thank the mentor and whole program for making my child feel so special. Her reading ability really improved.

~EW! VT Parent

The relationships that have developed between my students and their mentor are hopefully ones that will last for many years. I never dreamed this program could be so amazing for students and for the mentors.
