NAPLAN Catch up Day

This week we continue looking in more detail at how we can respond to conflict in a way that is consistent with Biblical principles.

You would recall that the PeaceWise model talks about the Slippery Slope of Conflict and divides our responses into "Peace Faking", "Peace Breaking", and "Peace Making". Last week, we thought a little about appropriate responses that involve only the parties involved in the conflict. They were "Overlooking an Offence", "Reconciliation".

The next three responses are "assisted" responses, where others are brought in to assist resolve the conflict. These responses are "Mediation", "Adjudication" and "Accountability".

Mediation—If two people cannot reach an agreement in private, they should ask one or more objective outside people to meet with them to help them communicate more effectively and explore possible solutions. (Matthew. 18:16). These mediators may ask questions and give advice, but the parties retain the responsibility of making the final decision on how to resolve their differences. One of the major differences between secular mediation and Christian mediation is that secular mediation tends to focus on ‘cutting a deal’ and reaching a settlement, often through a process of drawn out positional bargaining that leaves the parties feeling that whilst a deal may have been reached, so much of the real underlying conflict, and indeed the wrong conduct of the other party, was left totally unaddressed. Christian mediation is different because it gives prime importance not just to resolution of material issues, but also to the relational issues that normally are central to any conflict. Issues of wrongful conduct, sin and justice are addressed, as parties are encouraged to own their own harmful behaviour as well as address the wrongs of others. But also principles of love, mercy and forgiveness are introduced into the process. (cont’d over page)

BOARD NOMINATIONS As previously advised, the current Parent Appointed Board Member – Mr Ben Dootson – was eligible to

stand for re-election. After our call for other nominations closed, Mr Dootson was the only nomination, and

therefore, with pleasure, we inform the parent community that Mr Dootson will continue to serve on the

School Board from 2013-2015.

DON’T FORGET OUR SECONDARY INFORMATION

EVENING IS ON TONIGHT COMMENCING AT 7PM.

IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN

JOINING OUR SCHOOL IN THE SECONDARY DEPARTMENT,

PLEASE ENCOURAGE THEM TO COME ALONG.

2013 YEAR 6 STUDENTS AND PARENTS—DON’T FORGET THIS EVENING IS FOR YOU AS WELL.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL (Cont’d) Arbitration—When those involved in a conflict cannot come to a voluntary agreement on a material issue, it may be the time to appoint one or more arbitrators to listen to the arguments and render a binding decision to settle the issue. (1 Corinthians 6:4). In the midst of this process, it is important that the motivation remains a desire not to bring the gospel of Jesus into disrepute. We need to seek to honour God by allowing the decision to be made by godly Christian people who are engaged to assist in adjudication.

Accountability—If a person who professes to be a Christian refuses to be reconciled and do what is right, Jesus commands church leaders to lovingly intervene to hold him or her accountable to Scripture and to promote repentance, justice, and forgiveness: (Matthew 18:12, Matthew 18:17). You will note here that the responsibility is with the leadership and that the idea in Matthew 18:17 of "treat(ing) them as you would a pagan or a tax collector" does not mean that a wrong doer is hated, despised or mistreated, but that consequences are given with the motivation of love and hope that forgiveness will be sought.

In our school, for example, we believe that we must "never write a student off". This does NOT mean that we do not discipline, including, in some cases, exclusion from the school through suspension or expulsion, but when we take these ultimate measures, we are doing it not because we are giving up on a student, but because we believe that this is an appropriate response that, we trust, may ultimately bring a student to acknowledge guilt and change. It has been a joy to see that has happened in many cases in the past.

STAGE 3 EXCURSION, AND SECONDARY CAMP While I am sure that there will be separate reports about last week's events, having visited both with Mr Smith, I would like to take this opportunity to make a few comments:

The atmosphere of both events was outstanding, with teachers singing the praises of our wonderful students for:

Their positive behaviour;

Their co-operative spirit;

Their genuine engagement in activities.

Yet again, non-NCS observers (bus drivers, camp staff, guest speaker, Parliament House staff, members of the public and accompanying parents) commented on the wonderful behaviour, attitudes and engagement that our students demonstrated;

The fantastic encouragement of the whole student community of each other at the Secondary Talent Quest remains such a positive aspect of our school's culture;

While Mr Parker and Mr Wright deserve great praise for their hard work and wonderful organisation of these events, all staff involved are to be commended for their hard work and commitment in making these 2 events such a highlight of the students' year. Dr Gannell

SECONDARY CAMP REPORT We had a great time getting to know each other better, being challenged by activities and being challenged by God’s word. Our speaker, Matthew Arkapaw, challenged us to consider what the Bible says about judgement, including the judgements we make about others and God’s judgement Jesus faced so that we don’t have to.

Thanks to the teachers who gave up so much of their time to be on 24 hour duty to make camp work. Thanks also to the Prefects and House Captains who so capably led us for our night time activities. They worked hard and pulled off two great nights.

Special thanks also to Jonno Becker who suffered for his art by shaving his head for his talent night act. We appreciate his willingness to suffer the cold of winter with no hair to give us a good laugh at camp. (Report by Mr Wright)

A HUGE THANK YOU TO MR WRIGHT FOR ALL HIS HARD WORK IN ORGANISING THE CAMP.

CANTEEN PRICE LIST

LINK for helpers roster

There is to be no frozen food ordered from the canteen as food for recess. The short period of time for this break means that the children are often delayed in returning to class as the food item takes too long to “eat”.

UNIFORM CHANGEOVER From Monday 13th May ALL students are to wear their FULL WINTER UNIFORM.

For the first 2 weeks of term, if the weather is still warm, students may continue to wear full summer uniform. A combination is not permitted.

On Thursday 9th May, we are

holding a light supper for ALL mums or female carers of students at NCS.

Thankyou to fathers/students who are sending their wife/mum

for a night off.

The numbers are small, but we will still be holding this great

evening and are looking forward to spoiling those mums that

are coming along.

CROSSROADS MINISTRY is a local ministry to disabled adults in the Shoalhaven area.

They meet once a month on Friday nights onsite at NCS in the Church Hall, with the aim of demonstrating God’s love in both practical ways (games, friendship) and by communicating the message of salvation in Jesus.

NCS has committed to helping with the program this year by taking a dozen volunteers, drawn

from the NCS community and including students, teachers and parents, and providing: assistance to the carers, supper and a short talk and song.

We are helping on Friday 10 May from 6.15 – 9.15 pm. If you are interested in being a part of the team, please contact Mrs Bate in the office and let her know!

We are still looking for volunteers… You can join in the games, or just help serve supper. You will surprised at how much fun you will have.

If you are unable to make it and would be willing to provide something for supper, that would also be great.

What are Head Lice?

Head lice are tiny insect parasites that live on the human head and need human blood as food. They lay their eggs (nits) on the hair shaft close to the scalp, approx 1cm away. Nits that are further away are likely to be empty leftovers.

How are Head Lice spread?

They spread by direct contact, 'walking' from one head to another. They don't jump, fly or swim. They happen in the best circles and do not mean that you or your child are unclean or dirty. Head lice are a very common problem, especially in school children.

What are the signs of Head Lice?

The main symptom may be an itchy scalp, especially behind the ears and the neck area. Crawling head lice may be seen in the hair; adult lice are usually dark brown in colour and 2 - 3mm long but it's difficult to see them as they hide. Eggs are grey - white and about the size of a grain of salt and they stick on the hair which makes them easier to see. Some children might feel itching weeks later or not at all.

How do I look for Head Lice?

Carefully comb plenty of hair conditioner through dry hair then comb again with a fine tooth nit comb. Wipe the comb onto a white paper towel and examine the towel for head lice and eggs. Rinse the hair as normal.

What should I do if I find Head Lice?

Firstly, DON'T PANIC! Most times you can make the diagnosis and start treatment yourself. Check all household members for head lice. Inform the school and other contacts, including relatives and friends so that they may be checked.

How do I treat Head Lice?

use of insecticides, available in lotion and shampoo form. The normal advice is to treat once and repeat the treatment after 7 days over a longer period. The treatments which follow the initial treatment are because any remaining eggs should have hatched. Check the hair daily, repeat treatments and do the 'bug busting'.

Bug Busting - Wash the hair as normal, apply conditioner and comb all hair thoroughly with a nit comb. After each stroke, check the comb for lice and wipe it clean. Work systematically around the whole head of hair. Rinse the hair as normal. Re-peat every 2 - 4 days for at least 2 weeks. The conditioner causes the louse to lose its grip on the slippery hair and also prob-ably blocks the breathing apparatus.

It's assumed that head lice survive even longer without food (blood) and may survive in bedding, car seats etc... for 2 - 3 days. It's recommended to change bedding, vacuum car seats, sofas and beds on a regular basis. Efficient methods are heat, such as hot washing, hair driers, ironing or cold like the freezer. Soft toys should be washed hot or put in the freezer for some days or you can put them into plastic bags for 2 weeks.

How can I prevent a Head Lice infestation?

brush hair thoroughly and regularly • Inspect hair after each washing

tie back long hair while in school • do not share brushes, combs, hats or towels

remind children to avoid head to head contact • bug busting every week

Are there any shampoos I could use for prevention?

There is no specific proof for their efficiency but some parents recommend the following products;

tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner • lavender products

check with your chemist

Should I do the treatment as prevention?

It's not recommended to use head lice shampoo as a preventative measure. These products kill the head lice but don't prevent an infestation. Lice might build up a resistance. The scalp may also become irritated.

Does my child have to stay at home because of the Head Lice infestation?

After a thorough treatment, children can return to school. If there are some nits left, they will hatch after seven days so the shampoo treatment has to be repeated at that time. After hatching, the young lice are not able to leave the host for seven days. Only adult lice can change their host.
