I would like to begin by sincerely thanking our dedicated team of staff and volunteers. Their support and commitment have ensured that The Epilepsy Centre has been able to continue to provide high quality services, education and support across SA & NT. We have reached the end of a difficult year, however with our team’s resilience and enthusiasm, I am confident we can tackle the challenges before us. The Board has set a new Strategic Plan for 2012-2015 which focuses on three key objectives: increasing our ability to respond to the needs of people and their families living with epilepsy; raising epilepsy awareness through government lobbying, collaborative services and education; and ensuring a sustainable support service by maximising financial security. This last objective is critical. Although our meetings with the Departments of Health and Communities and Social Inclusion over the past year have not resulted in achieving funding, we seek to continue to develop strong partnerships with Government, community organisations and businesses to enhance diverse revenue streams, while ensuring effective cost management. A line by the ancient Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus reads: “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which, in prosperous circumstances, would have lain dormant.” This is an appropriate quote for our current circumstances, and I salute the energy and efforts of our team in dynamically and proactively rising to tackle the challenges ahead. Dr Michelle Bellon President

Our mission is “To improve in all respects the welfare of people with epilepsy and their families in South Australia and the Northern Territory” underpinned with a vision to “Be the leading provider of epilepsy services and to create a centre of excellence”. I am honored to serve people living with epilepsy and I am very grateful for the support and appreciation that we receive. The Epilepsy Centre has experienced a very difficult year, which is compounded by the fact that we do not receive any Government funding despite our continuing best efforts. All other state Epilepsy Associations receive funding to assist them with complex service delivery. Our Epilepsy Clinics at the Flinders Medical Centre (both Adult & Paediatric) and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital are our prime focus because they allow us to address needs at the time that patients are newly diagnosed with epilepsy. Our Client Services team has continued to provide a diverse range of services to our clients. Regrettably we have had to reduce staff in our Northern Territory office in Darwin because of the lack of funding. We again are delivering services from our Hindmarsh office, supplemented with short face to face visits. We continue to actively seek recurrent funding from the Northern Territory Government. Demand in both South Australia and the Northern Territory is greater than our resources and we therefore need additional funding to continue to operate and to expand our services. Our Call Centre is our major source of income and we conduct our Bonanza Lotteries to ensure viability. Thank you sincerely to everyone who buys tickets. We are indebted to you and all our wonderful donors and supporters who enable us to provide most of our services free to people and their families living with epilepsy. I thank you all sincerely for enabling us to continue to provide services across the last thirty seven years. I am indebted to our Board for their vision in approving and enabling the recruitment of our Business Development Manager and our Call Centre Manager. We have gained new contracts and improved productivity and performance as a consequence. I have continued to introduce new initiatives to increase our revenue. Our existing income generating initiatives continue to grow and support from “The “Divas” volunteer fundraising group has enabled us to benefit from the proceeds of special events, including “Wear Red Race Day”, “Gangsters & Molls” and “Boys Day Out”. They do a fantastic amount of work to make these events successful and I particularly thank Event Manager, Margaret D’Athridge for her dedication, energy and enthusiasm. I sincerely thank our entire team for their loyalty and dedication who perform magnificently to achieve our goals. And I convey my sincere appreciation to our amazing and dedicated volunteers, particularly John Barnett OAM and Jane Sievewright. Everyone provides valuable support which enables me to more rapidly progress The Epilepsy Centre’s mission and vision. I particularly thank our President, Michelle Bellon for her guidance and leadership. I am passionate about the epilepsy cause and it is humbling to serve The Epilepsy Centre and I thank the Board for their continued support. Our new Strategic Plan 2012-2015 has been completed and this vision will enable our Board and I to lead us forward. Robert Cole Chief Executive Officer Robert Cole Chief Executive Officer

Our Client Services team provided essential services, family support and specialist services to more than 2,500 people living with epilepsy and their families throughout SA & NT - and through our broader work with employers , communities and schools, had a direct impact on thousands of South Australians and Northern Territorians . We continue to be responsive to changing demands for services, changes within the broader environment in which The Epilepsy Centre operates and to the challenges driven by achievements against the organisation’s strategic plan. 2011–12 IN FOCUS During the year The Client Services team focused on a number of critical areas including Hospital Clinics, Epilepsy Management Plans for children at school, administration of Intranasal Midazolam training in the community and our E-camp and family camp programs. Trigger, the Epilepsy Tiger was developed to teach children living with epilepsy about the importance of understanding their triggers. It became evident that a lot of parents were struggling to explain to their young children the importance of taking medication regularly, thus the concept of Trigger was born. We worked closely with a graphic artist who designed Trigger. As the result of Izla’s Purple Crusade City to Bay fundraising and a grant from Community Benefit SA we were able to bring Trigger to life. Our next goal is to send Trigger out to schools to teach children about epilepsy to help reduce the stigma associated with the condition. Trigger has been a huge success, he now has his own newsletter and children living with epilepsy can request a poster reminding them of their individual triggers. The Epilepsy Centre’s Seizure Clinics continue to build momentum, with two clinics being run at the Flinders Medical Centre Neurology Outpatient Department, a Complex Epilepsy Clinic within the Women’s & Children’s Hospital and adult and paediatric clinics being held at the Alice Springs’ Hospital in the Northern Territory with visiting Neurologists from Flinders Medical Centre and The Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The clinics are an integral part of our service delivery, giving clients more streamlined access to services such as Epilepsy Management Planning for school children, information on seizures, medication and training around the use of Intranasal Midazolam. We continue our relationship with the Paediatric Unit and Variety Children’s Centre at the Flinders Medical Centre. Our Registered Nurses provide education and support to families whose child has been prescribed Intranasal Midazolam. Parents have reported how supportive this project has been, as The Epilepsy Centre’s Registered Nurses provide everything that parent’s require to ensure that medication can be safely administered and they do not have to worry about organising Epilepsy Management Plans, medication orders or even booking in for a test dose in hospitals. Thanks to funds obtained through the Medical Device Commercialisation Program – Medical Device Research Grant administered by the Department for Manufacturing, Innovation, Trade, Resources and Energy. We are working closely with Flinders University and Roche Foam to develop a seizure safe pillow. The pillow was developed by The Epilepsy Centre and is currently undergoing exhaustive tests to ensure its safety and viability. E-camp 2011 saw over 60 children embark on the Mylor Baptist Camp site. A huge thank you must go to the fantastic volunteers that help make the camp such a success. “I love E-camp. I feel safe and I can just be myself without worrying what other people are saying about me and I get to catch up with my friends” 13 year old E-camper. As well as E-camp we held another Family Camp at the West Beach Caravan Park at which 17 families attended and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Our Family Camps give families the opportunity to meet others and to share experiences, stories and friendships. Thank you to Splodge (www.splodge.com.au) for their fantastic program for the children. “Thank you for inviting my family to the epilepsy camp! My girls had a great time. Very much appreciated to you all including the volunteers!” COUNSELLING AND SUPPORT Our counsellors continue to work hard delivering support services to our existing clients as well as the growing number of new clients who are either newly diagnosed or have been referred by their doctor for the first time. We were delighted when Dianne Day completed her degree in Social Work. She now works as the Epilepsy Centre’s Social Worker. This new role gives The Epilepsy Centre new scope to better support our clients.

RURAL AND REMOTE As part of our commitment to provide services across SA and NT, we continued our visits to rural and remote areas to deliver services in such places as Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, and Mt Gambier. Unfortunately we were unable to continue to support a staff member in Darwin after funding was not renewed, however we still maintain an office and we visit The Northern Territory as often as we can to ensure we maintain services to people living with Epilepsy in the region. SOCIAL NETWORKING We are on Facebook! (http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/The-Epilepsy-Centre/140528996054) and twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/epilepsycentre). Our aim is to provide up to date information to our followers as well as providing an avenue for people to share ideas and thoughts. It has already proven to be a great source of communication and information sharing not only across SA and NT but around the world! Highlights and achievements E-camp: Epilepsy Therapy Camp Trigger the Tiger Seizure Safe Pillow Family Camp Seizure Clinics Over the past year, The Epilepsy Centre has continued to provide support programs which have assisted individuals and families living with epilepsy despite the many obstacles such as lack of funding and limited resources. Our aim is to provide people living with epilepsy, with the skills and knowledge to enable them to function and develop as individuals and as a family unit. Our strategy to educate the general community about epilepsy continues to build momentum and eventually we hope this will also reduce the stigma and ignorance surrounding epilepsy. The Epilepsy Centre is committed to working with families, carers, GPs, Neurologists, allied health professionals and other service providers to meet the needs of each client. Our aim is to increase the opportunity for each person to participate more widely within their community to live their best life. I am very proud of my team for all the hard work and commitment that they put into their roles despite increasing workloads and obstacles that cross their paths from time to time. And to all the volunteers that support the Client Services Team, without you we would not be where we are today. The Epilepsy Centre is leading the way in South Australia and the Northern Territory in epilepsy care, support, advocacy and education and we look forward to the ongoing challenges of making a difference for people living with epilepsy.
