Era un dilluns de juny. Aquell dia la Laura i en Joan havien

anat una hora abans a l’escola, però la matinada valia la pena:

participaven en un torneig de futbol platja a Gavà. Els partits es

feien de 9 a 12 del matí, per evitar les hores en les quals el sol

era més fort, ja que si bé encara no eren oficialment a l’estiu, el

sol ja picava amb una força considerable.

—Laaura, Joooan, us truquen! —els va cridar en Ferran, el

mestre d’educació física, que amb les presses d’anar-los a

avisar no mirava on posava els peus i, és clar, ja se sap que

algunes bosses són trapelles i de tant en tant fan la traveta.

It was a Monday in June. That day Laura and Joan had gone to school an hour early, but getting up extra early turned out to be well worth their while because they were taking part in a beach football tournament in Gavà. The matches were to be played between 9 and 12 in the morning to avoid the hottest time of the day, since, even though it still wasn't officially summer, the sun was starting to beat down.

'Laaura, Joooan, someone’s calling you!', called out Mr Alsina, their PE teacher who, in his haste to go and tell them, didn't look where he was walking and, well, you know full well that some bags play tricks on us and have a nasty habit of tripping us up!

—Ostres, quina nata! Estàs bé, Ferran?

—li va preguntar en Joan, mentre la

Laura intentava netejar una mica el mòbil

de l’escola per poder-hi parlar.

—Digui’m? I tant, que podem col·laborar

en una recerca per a la Xarxa de

Referència en Tècniques Avançades de

la Producció (XaRTAP), per crear una

nova màquina. Que divertit! ‘Oh, gosh, I bet that hurt! Are you okay, Mr Alsina?’, Joan asked him, while Laura tried to clean the school mobile so that she could talk.‘Hello? Yes, of course we can collaborate in a research project for the Reference Network in Advanced Production Techniques (XaRTAP) to create a new machine. How exciting!’

—Has dit màquines? Que xulo! —va exclamar en

Joan, a qui també li encantava muntar i desmuntar

coses.

—Calla, Joan, que no els sento bé —li va

recriminar la Laura, que, entre els crits dels partits

de futbol i en Joan tot excitat fent comentaris al

seu costat, no entenia el que li deien per telèfon.—

On diu que hem d’anar? A Barcelona? A

Terrassa? A Girona? A Castelldefels? A Bellaterra?

—va dir la Laura, esglaiada.

Sense els poders màgics activats, li costava molt

situar tan ràpidament les localitats al mapa.

—A tants llocs, hem d’anar? Ah, d’acord, que

com que són una xarxa de Grups de recerca

podem escollir el que tinguem més proper. Doncs

si som a Gavà, evidentment, Castelldefels. Hi

anem ara mateix.

‘Did you say machines? How cool!’, said Joan, who also loved assembling and disassembling things.‘Be quiet, Joan, I can’t hear them properly,’ reproached Laura, who could not understand a word they were saying to her on the phone, what with the football matches and Joan making excited comments in her ear. ‘Where did you say we have to go? To Barcelona? To Terrassa? To Girona? To Castelldefels? To Bellaterra?’, said Laura, startled.Without their magic powers activated she found it really hard to locate places on a map quickly. ‘How many places have we got to go to? Ah, ok. Seeing that they’re a network of research groups, we can choose the one that’s closest to us. Well if we’re in Gavà, then obviously the nearest one is Castelldefels. Then let’s go there right away.’

I dit i fet, la Laura i en Joan es

van afanyar a agafar un taxi,

però abans calia preparar-se.

A banda que necessitaven

els coneixements que els

proporcionaven els poders

màgics, també calia tenir un

aspecte presentable, que

tampoc no era qüestió de

personar-se en banyador a la

XaRTAP.

—Unim les energies! —van

repetir les quatre vegades

necessàries perquè

s’activessin els poders

màgics.

And without another word, Laura and Joan rushed to catch a taxi. However, before leaving, they needed to get themselves ready. Apart from needing the knowledge bestowed on them by their magic powers, they also needed to look presentable; they could hardly turn up at XaRTAP in their swimsuits!'Combine our forces!', they repeated the four times required to activate their magic powers.

‘Almost ready,’ replied the group from Girona who were working on computer vision.

‘And the software, too. We’re carrying out the final trials,’ said a computer engineer from Bellaterra.

Once there, they were immediately whisked into a meeting that the Network groups who worked together on the research were holding via videoconference. XaRTAP was made up of many groups who were all investigating how to improve production processes for businesses; in other words, how to perfect the steps that have to be followed to improve products in a safer and more ecological way, while also making them more competitive to help them sell more.

‘We’ve got the motor ready here. Girona, how’s the camera going?’, they asked from Barcelona.

En arribar, de seguida van poder entrar a una reunió que, mitjançant una videoconferència, estaven

fent els grups de la Xarxa que treballaven conjuntament en la recerca. La XaRTAP estava formada

per molts grups que investigaven com millorar els processos de producció de les empreses; és a

dir, com perfeccionar les passes que cal seguir per fer millors productes, de manera més segura i

ecològica, i que al mateix temps siguin més competitius per poder-ne vendre més.

—Aquí ja tenim a punt el motor. Girona, com teniu la càmera? —van preguntar des de Barcelona.

—Ja gairebé la tenim a punt —va respondre el grup de Girona, que treballava la visió per

computador.

—I el programari també. N’estem fent els darrers assaigs —va dir des de Bellaterra una enginyera

informàtica.

—Assegureu-vos-en bé, que ja sabeu que és fonamental

que el sistema informàtic funcioni bé perquè el motor es

mogui com cal.

—Max, com tota la resta de components, no? —es va

queixar, fent broma, un enginyer de materials des del

Grup de recerca de Terrassa, que era l’encarregat de

dissenyar i construir el sistema elèctric del motor.

—Evidentment! No us ho prengueu així, que ja sabeu que

m’agrada insistir-hi. Sense un bon programa informàtic el

motor és com si no tingués intel·ligència; amb la càmera

tindria ulls, amb les connexions elèctriques tindria sistema

nerviós, però no tindria cervell, i sense cervell... —En Max

intentava explicar-se per no ferir susceptibilitats, però no

podia evitar recordar una mala experiència passada amb

els ordinadors. I és que els ordinadors són molt útils, però

algunes vegades donen uns maldecaps!

‘Make absolutely sure of everything; you know how important it is that the IT system works for the motor to move as it should.’‘Max, like all the other components, don’t you mean?’, came the light-hearted complaint from a materials engineer from the Terrassa research group, who was responsible for designing and constructing the motor’s electrical system.‘Obviously! Don’t take it like that; you know how I like to insist on things. Without a good IT programme, it would be as if the motor had lost its smarts; with the camera it would have eyes, with the electrical connections, the nervous system, but it wouldn’t have a brain, and without a brain…’ Max tried to explain himself so as not to hurt anyone’s feelings, but he couldn’t help remembering a bad experience he’d once had with computers. The thing is, computers are very useful, but they sometimes can cause real problems.

—Tranquil, Max. Només fèiem broma,

perquè si ho mirem així, tot és igual

d’important, oi? I si no està ben

preparat el sistema nerviós del sistema?

Ja li pot anar donant ordres el cervell

per moure el motor...

—Teniu raó, com us deia, però...

—Va, deixa-ho estar, Max. Que no veus

que et prenen el pèl? Encara ens queda

feina per fer —el va tallar la Judit, que

volia acabar la reunió per posar fil per

randa els últims preparatius.

—A més, ja tenim a l’equip la Laura i en

Joan! No podem desaprofitar la seva

ajuda en les quaranta-vuit hores que

poden col·laborar amb nosaltres —s’hi

va afegir en Daniel, que sabia que no

podien malbaratar la valuosa ajuda de la

Laura i en Joan.

—Molt bé, donem la reunió per

acabada. Avui treballarem a tota màquina i demà al matí a primera hora ens trobarem a la fàbrica de la Farga Lacambra. Recordeu que

és a les Masies de Voltregà. Ja ho veureu, és un poble preciós a la riba del Ter —els va explicar en

Max mentre els mostrava un mapa.

'Don’t worry, Max. We were only joking. But if you think about it, everything is important, isn't it? What happens if the system’s nervous system isn't up to it? The brain can be there trying to give it orders to move the motor but…'

'You’re right, like I was saying, but...'

'Come on, let it go, Max. Can’t you see they’re just pulling your leg? We've still got work to do,' Judit interrupted, who was eager to finish the meeting to be able to get on with last-minute preparations.

'And remember, we've got Laura and Joan here to help

us now!' 'We need to make the most of the forty-eight hours of help they can give us,' added Daniel, who knew they could not waste the valuable collaboration of Laura and Joan.

'Great. Let’s wrap up the meeting here then. We’ll work flat out today and early tomorrow morning we’ll meet at the Farga Lacambra factory. Remember that it’s in Les Masies de Voltregà. You can’t miss it; it's a beautiful town on the banks of the Ter,' explained Max while pointing the place out on the map.

Quan es va acabar la reunió per videoconferència,

la Laura i en Joan, amb la Judit i en Daniel, una

enginyera i un enginyer industrials del Grup de

recerca en tecnologies de la producció, es van

dirigir a un laboratori de la Xarxa per continuar

investigant.

—Veniu, que us ensenyo els plànols i us explico

en quin moment de la recerca ens trobem —els

va comentar la Judit.

—Judit, la Farga Lacambra és un nom molt

curiós per a una fàbrica... Com se’ls va acudir?

—va interrompre la Laura.

—Noia, curiós, curiós, tampoc no ho seria —

va fer broma en Daniel—. No saps què és una

farga? És on es forgen els metalls, o sigui, on

s’escalfen amb foc per poder-los donar forma —li

va recordar l’enginyer, amb una rialla.

—Renoi, és veritat, no hi havia caigut!

—L’empresa vol millorar la seva producció i la

When the videoconference meeting finished, Laura and Joan went with Judit, an engineer, and Daniel, an industrial engineer, both from the Production Technologies research group, to one of the Network’s laboratories to continue researching.

'Come along, I’ll show you the plans and explain where we are with the research right now,' said Judit.

'Judit, Farga Lacambra is quite a strange name for a factory... Where did they get it from?', interrupted Laura.

'It’s not really that strange,' joked Daniel. 'Don’t you know what a farga is? It’s where they forge metals; I mean where they’re heated with fire so they can be made into shapes,' explained the engineer with a smile.

'Good heavens, it’s true, I hadn't picked up on that!'

'The company wants to improve production and safety at work for the people who work there,' Judit started to explain, who was both amused and satisfied to see the drive and commitment shown by Laura and Joan. 'As you know, copper is completely recyclable, and that’s

why the factory uses old copper things to make copper pipes and all kinds of wire…'

'They are the ones we use to run electricity through cables, aren't they?', Joan hastened to add, trying to make up for their earlier mistake.

'Exactly. Copper is one of the best conductors of electricity, and so the guys at the forge,' continued Daniel smiling, 'the first thing they do is to melt all the copper and transform it into a liquid state to be able to make it into whatever shape they need depending on what they have to produce.

alhora de veure l’empenta i la decisió de la Laura i en Joan—. Com ja sabeu, el coure és totalment

reciclable, així que a la fàbrica reaprofiten coses velles de coure per fabricar canonades de coure i tota

mena de fils...

—Que són els que fem servir per conduir l’electricitat pels cables, oi? —es va apressar a continuar en

Joan, que volia rectificar les errades anteriors.

—Això mateix, el coure és un dels millors conductors de l’electricitat, i com a forja que és —va continuar

amb un somriure en Daniel—, el primer que fan és fondre tot el coure i transformar-lo en estat líquid, per

després donar-li la forma que necessitin en funció del que hagin de fabricar.

—I a quina temperatura cal escalfar el coure perquè es transformi en líquid?

—Més o menys a mil tres-cents graus centígrads.

—Bufa! I nosaltres ens queixàvem de la calor que feia a la platja...

—Doncs la persona que està treballant al costat de la màquina ho ha de passar molt malament, no?

—Només cal que us poseu en el seu lloc: imagineu-vos que la temperatura mitjana d’on s’ha de situar

la persona, per controlar que la quantitat de coure líquid que passa és la correcta, és d’uns seixanta

graus.

—Apa!

—Sí, sí, inaguantable, oi? A més, ha de suportar pols, brutícia...

—Esperem que la nostra recerca serveixi perquè no hagin de patir al lloc de treball...

—I perquè els fils de coure i les canonades surtin millor.

‘And at what temperature do they need to heat the copper for it to transform into liquid?’

‘More or less at one thousand three hundred degrees centigrade.’

‘Wow! And we were moaning about how hot it was at the beach…’

‘It must be really hard for the people who have got to work near the machines then, mustn’t it?’

‘Just put yourselves in their shoes: imagine that the average temperature where they have to stand to make sure that the right quantity of liquid copper comes through is around sixty degrees.’

‘No way!’

‘Really. It’s unbelievable, isn’t it? And on top of that they have to put up with dust, dirt…’

‘We hope our research will mean that they won’t have to suffer at work…’

‘And that the copper wires and pipes come out better.’

‘That’s right, both things are important.’

‘Up to now, the person who worked there had to be right next to the machine to control the level of liquid copper that filtered through; in other words, they had to decide whether to let through more or less copper.’

—Evidentment,

‘Everything is important, but this part of the process is key to make sure that the form given to the liquid copper later—whether for wires or pipes—is the best form possible’.

‘And what solution are you proposing?’

‘The idea, as you heard in the meeting, is that the machinist moves to a booth where they’ll be protected from the heat and dust.’

‘And so what we need is an artificial viewing system, or a camera that does the job of the person’s eyes, but from a distance.’

‘Well done, Joan, that’s the first step. So instead of the machinist moving the auger that regulates the level of copper going through, a remotely controlled motor will do it.’

‘Now I completely understand the research. It’s about making a computer-operated system that will work intelligently, isn’t

it? That the system itself can interpret whether the volume of liquid copper is right and can increase it or lower it depending on what is needed in production.’

‘Exactly! Well done! What a shame we are only able to have you here for forty-eight hours, Laura. I’m sure we would have got things done more quickly with your help,’ asserted Judit, impressed at the speed at which Laura and Joan understood things.

—Tot és important, però aquesta part del procés és clau per tal que la forma que es dóna al

coure líquid després, sigui per fer fils o canonades, sigui la millor possible.

—I quina és la solució que proposeu?

—La idea, com heu sentit a la reunió, és que la persona operària es traslladi a una cabina i així

estigui protegida de la calor i la pols.

—Llavors necessita un sistema de visió artificial, o sigui, una càmera que faci la funció dels ulls

de la persona a distància.

—Molt bé, Joan, això és el principi. En comptes

de moure ell el punxó que regula el nivell de

coure que passa, ho farà un motor controlat a

distància.

—Ara acabo d’entendre del tot la recerca.

Es tracta de fer tot un sistema gestionat per

ordinador que treballi de forma intel·ligent, no?

Que ell mateix pugui interpretar si el volum de coure

líquid és el correcte i alci i abaixi el punxó en funció

del que es necessiti per a la fabricació.

—Molt bé! Llàstima que només us hem pogut tenir

quaranta-vuit hores, Laura. Segur que amb vosaltres hauríem

guanyat temps! —va exclamar la Judit, admirada de la velocitat

a la qual raonaven la Laura i en Joan.

Sense adonar-se’n va arribar l’hora de dinar, i els dos infants van menjar amb tota

la gent que treballava al grup de recerca de la XaRTAP a Castelldefels. S’ho estaven

passant la mar de bé, la gent tenia molt sentit de l’humor. Ara, que en Joan tampoc no

es quedava enrere...

—El coure és fantàstic perquè no tan sols és un dels millors conductors de l’electricitat

sinó que és cent per cent reciclable.

—Sí, i mai no té accidents, és un conductor segur!

Lunchtime came before they knew it and the two kids had lunch with everyone who worked in the XaRTAP research group in Castelldefels. They were having a really good time and everyone was joking around. And Joan certainly didn’t hold back…

‘Copper is fantastic because, not only is it one of the best conductors of electricity, it’s also completely recyclable.’

‘Yes, and just like a great band conductor, it always keeps everything in perfect tune!’

Van passar la tarda analitzant amb tot detall el plànol de la instal·lació que havien de col·locar

l’endemà a la fàbrica.

—Per què dos armaris?

—L’armari principal té

el programa informàtic

del motor, i des d’allà

s’envien els senyals de la

càmera a la pantalla de

l’ordinador.

—I també al revés, no?

Els senyals que s’envien

fins al motor des de

l’ordinador de la cabina

de control, oi?

—I tant, si no, malament

aniríem! És com si jo et

parlés i tu mai no em

poguessis respondre.

—I l’altre és el que té tots

els circuits que controlen

el colador.

—A veure, repassem-ho

bé. Em sembla que ja

només falten els polsadors d’emergència per aturar el motor si hi ha algun problema.

—Sí, s’ha de poder tallar l’alimentació d’electricitat als dos armaris en cas d’emergència.

—Ep, no ens podem oblidar del sistema per fer que, des de la cabina, també es pugui fer anar el

punxó de forma manual, per si algun dia falla el sistema...

They spent the afternoon analysing in detail the map of the installation they had to install at the factory the next day. 'Why two cabinets?'

'The main cabinet houses the motor's software programme, and from there the signals are sent from the camera to the computer screen.' 'And also the other way round, I suppose. I mean, the signals sent to the motor from the computer in the control cabinet.' 'Yes, of course, or it would be a bit of a disaster otherwise! It would be like if I talked to you but you never answered me.'

'And the other one is the one that houses all the circuits that control the drain.' 'Ok, let’s make sure everything’s in order. I think that all we’re missing are the emergency switches to stop the motor in the event of a problem.' 'Oh yes, we need to be able to cut the electricity supply to the two cabinets in an emergency.' 'Hey, let’s not forget to include a system from the cabinet to make sure that the auger can be operated manually in case of a system failure…'

De bon matí, totes les persones dels onze grups de recerca que havien ideat la

millora a la producció de la Farga van iniciar la instal·lació de les millores.

—L’empresa la va fundar en Francesc Lacambra el 1808. Van començar fent

claus, olles i campanes a Barcelona —els va explicar amb orgull l’Elena, la

directora de la fàbrica.

Però tot i que els encantava, no tenien gaire temps per a la història, perquè havien

de participar en tot el muntatge. A la Laura i en Joan els va tocar, amb l’enginyer

bromista de Terrassa, que van descobrir que es deia Àlex, instal·lar i comprovar

els components que havien

d’anar a la cabina.

Un cop ho van haver muntat,

va ser emocionant veure com

començava a rutllar tot: primer

ficaven el coure al forn; un

cop fos, passava al colador,

a l’entrada del qual hi havia el

punxó; la càmera enviava les

imatges a l’ordinador, que les

interpretava i movia el punxó

per deixar passar més o menys

coure líquid. A la part del procés

de producció següent, el coure

s’anava solidificant en forma

de barres, de les quals treien

els fils de coure, i després van

estar fabricant canonades... Era

increïble!

‘The company was founded by Francesc Lacambra in 1808. They started making keys, pans and bells in Barcelona,’ explained Elena, the director of the factory, with pride.

But however much they loved history, they didn’t have much time to spare, since they had to help out with the assembly. Laura and Joan worked alongside the funny engineer from Terrassa, whose name they found out to be Àlex, installing and checking the components that had to go

in the cabinet.

Once assembled, it was exciting to see how everything was coming together: first they put the copper in the forge; once melted, it went through the drain, at the start of which was the auger; the camera sent the images to the computer which interpreted them and moved the auger to let more or less liquid copper through. During the following production process, the copper solidified into blocks, from which they took the copper wires, afterwards producing pipes… It was amazing!

Encara era d’hora per treure’n

conclusions, però l’estona

que ho havien pogut observar

semblava que tot rutllava força

bé. Ara havien de passar uns

quants dies per poder treure’n

conclusions i valorar la millora

que la XaRTAP havia introduït a

la producció de productes de

coure. Per fer-ne un seguiment,

hi aniria pujant personal

investigador de la Xarxa. A la

Laura i en Joan, a banda que

la seva col·laboració ja havia

acabat, ja els començaven a

fer figa els poders màgics. Així

que van baixar amb la Judit

i en Daniel a Barcelona per

explicar com havia anat tot al

director del projecte, en Max. I,

naturalment, per celebrar l’èxit,

van anar a fer un bon dinar i

després una partida de bitlles!

—Si guanyo no vull ni medalla d’or ni d’argent! Vull la de bronze! —va cridar en Joan, que feia broma: el

bronze és un aliatge de coure i estany.

—Ni t’ho pensis, que em trauràs la medalla de bronze! —el va reptar la Laura, que li va seguir la broma.

Al final, la Laura i en Joan van haver de marxar. Els sabia greu abandonar la seva col·laboració a la

XaRTAP, però encara tenien l’opció de tornar-hi en un futur...

—Hem tingut sort

d’haver arribat al

final de la recerca,

així hem pogut

començar a veure

com funcionava. Però

m’hauria agradat ser a

temps de dissenyar el

programari que havia

de ser el cervell de la

càmera.

—Òndia, i a mi! Ara,

que dissenyar el

motor que havia de

moure el punxó també

m’hauria encantat.

—Ja veuràs quan

expliquem la recerca

a la Carla i l’Ismael,

tant que els agraden

les màquines i els

ordinadors!

—S’hauran de pensar

bé quina enginyeria

volen estudiar, perquè

hi ha tantes coses

diferents i fascinants

que es poden crear...

It was still too early to draw conclusions, but during the time they’d been able to observe things, it looked as though everything was going really well. They now had to wait a few days to be able

to draw precise conclusions and to assess the improvements the XaRTAP had made to the production of copper products. Researchers from the Network would be dropping by to check on things. It was lucky that their collaboration had come to an end, because Laura and Joan found that their magic powers were beginning to wear thin. So they went with Judit and Daniel to Barcelona to explain everything to the project manager, Max. And to celebrate their success, they went for a hearty lunch followed by a game of tenpin bowling!

‘If I win, I won’t be satisfied with either a gold or silver medal! I want a bronze one!’, shouted Joan, joking around. You see, bronze is an alloy of copper and tin.

‘Don’t you dare think you’ll beat me to the bronze medal!’, Laura challenged him, taking up the joke.
