Die wenners moes tradisionele klere van hul eie voorvaders aantrek en Nikita het ’n kostuum van Hongarye gedra wat deur Ronell Joubert ontwerp is. Lande soos Ierland, Brazil, Hawaii, Egipte, Holland en Kuba het deelgeneem.Nikita bedank graag Lize Maritz wat haar hare vir die jaar borg en gaan optooi as ook Elrina Trollip van Divine Nails wat haar naels en ander skoonheidsbesoeke gaan borg vir die jaar. “ONS sal lewe, ons sal sterwe, ons vir jou Suid-Afrika.” Hierdie woorde het oor die dekades en eeue moed gegee aan soldate wat Suid-Afrika verdedig het. 10 Oktober was nog altyd tradisioneel Heldedag, asook die verjaardag van die oud-president van die Republiek Paul Kruger. Dit is Maandag gevier by die Burgermonument op die gronde van die NG Moedergemeente. Die kranslegging vir oud-soldate en gesneuweldes was ’n hartroerende herdenking. Die stryd wat Afrikaners gehad het in die Anglo Boere Oorlog, 1899 tot 1901, in die konsentrasiekampe waar honderde-duisende vrouens en kinders dood is en ander groot verliese van ons nasie is herdenk. Mnr. Johan Loots, skoolhoof van die Hoërskool Lydenburg, het Maandag ’n hartroerende toespraak gelewer en onder
meer gevra dat ouers weer hul kinders die geskiedenis van ons land leer. Hy het ook ’n huldeblyk aan sy pa gelewer, wat geleef het vir die geskiedenis. Van die ander sprekers was Genl. Constant Viljoen, mnr. Hans Meyer, me. Hannetjie van der Merwe, Kmdt. Egbert Hiemstra en Kol. Marnus van der Wal. Kranse is gelê deur verskeie mense onder meer die CVO skool, Lydenburg Laerskool endie Hoërskool Lydenburg. Dankie aan almal wat hierdie herdenkingsdag moontlikgemaak het en dat die helde van Suid-Afrika so herdenkkon word.

Welkom ChinaSO, net soos die NP destyds sonder ’n skoot oorgegee het aan die ANC, so het die ANC sonder ’n skoot oorgegee aan China. Ter wille van hulle geldgod.Die dilemma met die Dalai Lama se visum, het die ANC baie skade gedoen. Maar dit is maar een insident wat deur die Biskop aan die groot klok gehang is. Of jy van hom hou of nie, Tutu kritiseer waar nodig.Die regering se hopeloosheid word daagliks gedemonstreer. Die meeste swart mense in hierdie land bly stem vir die regering, terwyl hulle behandeling in hospitale veel swakker is as onder die apartheidsregering. Hulle stem terwyl die standaard van onderwys nou selfs swakker is as
die destydse gehate Bantu Onderwys. Hulle bly stem vir ’n regering wat die Ghaddafi kwessie so swak gelees het dat die res van die wêreld vir ons daaroor gelag het.Hulle bly stem vir ’n regering wat die Mugabe diktatorskap aan die gang hou.Hulle stem terwyl geld wat water kan voorsien, aan ’n Swazi koninkie gegee word om hom aan bewind te hou. Hulle stem terwyl die reuse Thaba Chweu Munisipaliteit (driekeer groter as destyds) nie eens een enkele straathoek onder in Potgieterstraat, of slaggate kan herstel nie. Hulle stem terwyl mense in Mashishing rondom rou rioolafval moet loop.Hulle stem vir en ondersteun ’n mannetjie wat sing “Kill the Boer”, terwyl hy die volgende dag sê hy is lief vir wit mense. Dit is die probleem. Die mense sal enige twak glo. Na 17 jaar glo hulle steeds die regering kan “deliver”. Siestog. Mens moet sulke naïviteit en gedienstigheid probeer begryp. Is dit deel van die Afrikaan se kultuur? Party rassiste sal sê ja. Party sê dit is wat kolonialisme aan hulle gedoen het. Dit na 17 jaar van sogenaamde vryheid?
Maar ek glo nie so mooi nie. Daar is stadig maar seker ’n gatvolheid besig om by baie swart mense te ontwikkel. Hulle praat nog nie baie nie. Hulle word geïntimideer en gedreig. Die media se mond word gesnoer, maar die waarheid en die boodskap kom uit. In die koerante, op die Internet en as dit moet, met Afrika dromme, maar die mense begin rumoerig raak oor die roekeloosheid, gierigheid en onbevoegdheid van die owerheid. Op elke vlak van die samelewing.Die mense begin verstaan hoe dinge werk. Hulle verstaan dat hulle nooit weer deur witmense onderdruk hoef te word nie. Hulle begin verstaan dat bekwaamheid niks met velkleur te doene het nie. Hulle begin verstaan dat die oorgrote meerderheid witmense nie hulle vyand is nie. Hulle soek en smag na sterk leierskap. Na leiers wat sinvolle besluite vinnig kan neem en kan uitvoer. Sonder vrees. Intussen moet ons mooi kyk na die Chinese, met hulle goedkoop klere, radio’s en skoene, wat reeds werkgeleenthede minder gemaak het. Ons moet die Chinese oppas, hulle dien en respekteer, want hulle het reeds stil-stil die land oorgeneem. Welkom. Miskien kan hulle iets aan ons vrot strate en riviere ook doen?

WEGGEGOOIDE KATJIES (Artikel in koerant van 6 Oktober 2011)
Ek was met afgryse gevul toe ek van die wreedheid in die koerant van 6 Oktober 2011 gelees het oor die katjies wat in ‘n kartondoos met twee bakstene in, gevind is. Wat het van die mens se waardigheid geword? As ’n persoon tot so ’n gewetenlose daad in staat is, waartoe is hy / sy nie anders ook in staat nie. ’n Troeteldier is nie ’n artikel wat ’n mens by ’n supermark koop en wanneer die batterye pap is, dit weggooi nie. Om ’n troeteldier aan te neem is ’n groot verantwoordelikheid. Daardie dier is afhanklik van jou as sy eienaar. Dit moet gevoed, versorg en die belangrikste van alles, gesteriliseer word as jy nie daarmee gaan teel nie. Gaan eet vir ’n aand of twee nie uit nie en steriliseer jou troeteldier met daardie geld. Gesteriliseerde katte is gesonder en loop nie rond nie. Ek hoop van harte dat die ma van daardie ongelukkige katjies intussen gesteriliseer is. Aan almal wat gehelp het om die katjies te red, ek dink julle het puik werk gedoen.

Ramon Bell skryf: Die afgelope naweek het net weereens bewys dat daar nog mense is wat uit hul pad sal gaan, op ’n Sondagoggend vroeg, tydens die rugby, om iemand te help. Roelf Castelyn van R & P Paneelkloppers en Ockert de Lange van Longtom Towing is sulke mense! Hierdie twee mense het uit hul pad gegaan om ons gesin te help en was dit nie vir hulle onbaatsugtige ondersteuning nie sou ons nou nog gesukkel het!! Jul nommers is nou by die hele gesin se noodnommers op die selfone en wees verseker dat ons julle vir almal sal aanbeveel!
Hans & Karin Steenekampvan Lydenburg skryf: Ons wil net graag aan almal baie dankie sê vir die hulp met die brand op ons plaas, terwyl ons in die buiteland was. Ons waardeer julle hulp en vinnige optrede opreg.
Daar is kalmte in roetine. Ek besef dit elke dag maar te terdeë. In die land van Hoorhierso kan irritasie maklik oorneem as die sistematiese gevolg van take omvergegooi word. Ek is seker daarvan dat elke mens sy roetine geniet. Selfs die wat voet by stuk hou dat dit lekker is as elke dag anders is. My oggend moet met tee begin. Al reën dit, hael dit of al skyn die son. Daar is iets te sê vir 'n koppie tee wat jou wakker maak in die oggend. Dit doen my goed. Omge-êllie, die taalpuriste onder julle moet asseblief die woord verskoon, raak ek sommer baie vinnig as ek iets moet doen wat ek nie voor die tyd beplan het nie. Dit maak my regtig siek. My eerste teken van spanning is 'n kramp in my linker-voorarm, dit voel of 'n stuk yster daarop geslyp word. En hoe meer ek daaroor dink hoe seerder word dit. Ek moet eerder nie meer uitbrei oor die simptome nie want my arm raak al hoe seerder op hierdie oomblik. Daarom sal ek liefs droom hoe ’n perfekte wêreld dit sou wees as alles volgens plan verloop. Dan sal niemand met 'n verkeerde voet uit die bed kan klim of aan die einde van die dag voel dat die dag hom baas geraak het nie. Want alles was beplan. Só ’n perfekte wêreld is verfilm in The Trueman Show met hoofspeler Jim Carrey. Sy lewe is vir hom gereël deur ’n rolprentvervaardiger sonder dat hy dit besef het. Alles maanskyn en rose. Ek besef dit kan nie altyd goed wees nie. Maar ek kan droom. Al is dit net dat my arms nie meer so seer moet wees nie. Ook dat ek self beheer kan uitoefen wat in my lewe gebeur, daar is te veel 'indringerplante' wat dit probeer verwoes. Dus sal ons hoop dat ’n roetiene eendag op die horison sal verskyn. Een van die dae is dit vakansie dan kan ons rondlê soos ons wil en die son en ander die see geniet. Een van die dae.

Haar uitstallings is reeds vir jare een van die gewildste sosiale-geleenthede in Lydenburg. En dan praat mens nog nie van die skilderye nie. Esmé se styl is impressionisties. “Ek
gebruik meeste die impasto-tegniek, verf word dik met ’n palletmes aangewend. Met my nuwe uitstalling het ek ’n paar verrassings en ook gunsteling, wat ek weet mense van hou,” het sy gesê. Emsé is baie beskeie oor haar werke maar kunskenners en leke stem saam dat daar iets spesiaals in is. Of dit dus ’n mooi prentjie is, die tegniek of haar kunstalent is, dis ’n talent om te bewonder.

SAMANCOR Eastern Chrome Mines constructed and commissioned their own laboratory in 2009. The laboratory plays a key role in ensuring that product quality is on specification. In May this year, the laboratory received an assessment by the South African National Accreditation Body, who uses the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS). This is a independent body capable of assessing organisations for compliance to the relevant international/national standards and verifying their appropriate competence for tasks in their scope of activities. SANAS acc r ed i t a t i on ben e f i t s a cc r ed i t ed organisations through an impartial assessment by experts on their performance. After a process of six months, the ECM lab received their accreditation on 27 July 2011.
thOn the 6 of October 2011 Linda Grundling from SANAS did the formal handover to Elsie Mashishi from ECM. She highlighted that the ECM Lab is now on par with any other international accredited laboratory. She also commended the Laboratory for this tremendous achievement within such a short period of time. SHEQ Manager Frank Cotton said :”ECM is very proud to have a laboratory of such high quality and is especially proud of the leadership team in the Laboratory who has lead this team to success.” He encouraged the team to keep up the good work.

We check out the newKia Rio at JIMSDURING our visit to the Johannesburg International Motor Show over the past weekend, we had the opportunity to see the new Kia Rio, which will be available from Kia Lydenburg soon.This is a totally new car, which features the new Kia design elements as penned by world famous designer Peter Schreier. We cannot reveal too much detail, but the cars come fully loaded and feature very efficient 1200 and 1400 engines. WE'd be rich if we were gifted a rand for each time VW unveiled a sporty special edition of its previous CitiGolf range, but it was a formula that worked well and we've been wondering why VW's creatives haven't yet tinkered with their latest entry-level offering, the Polo Vivo. That day has come with the unveiling of the Polo Vivo GT at the Johannesburg International Motor Show. Although the company hasn't made an official announcement on it yet, a bright red specimen, complete with a specification sheet, was on display for all to see. Yet despite what the badge might suggest, VW has not shoved a performance motor into the engine bay - instead the GT makes do with VW's familiar 77kW 1.6-litre petrol engine, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The GT does, however, offer much in the way of sporty design features and, fittingly, it comes with the Polo Vivo's three-door body style that was previously only available on the entry-level 1.4. To perk up the style, and road holding, VW has lowered the suspension and thrown in a set of 15-inch 'Cordoba' alloy wheels, with further visual bling added by the rear spoiler, chromed twin exhaust pipes and GT decals on the side of the vehicle. The racy theme continues full force in the cabin, where you'll find red seatbelts, chrome-painted dashboard inserts and door handles and a leather steering wheel. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, a four-speaker CD/USB/Bluetooth audio system, trip computer and electric windows. Of course, the obligatory dual front airbags and ABS brakes are also in place. The bill? The Polo Vivo GT is yours for R155 320. iolMotoring

Johannesburg International Motor ShowTHE bi-annual Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS) was attended by myself, Jacques Du Preez, Pierre Coetzee and Reinet Bell, over the weekend.It was, as always, a stunning show, with lots to see, to do and to eat and drink. All the mayor motoring manufacturers were there, with the exception of GWM and also all the bike manufacturers with the exception of Yamaha.The GM, Subaru (car) and Honda motorcycle stands were excellent. There were fewer classic cars than before. The heavy truck, trailer and bus divisions from Mercedes Benz, MAN, Scania, DAF and Freightliner were also there, with the new Freightliners sporting enough chrome to build an entire car from.Enjoy the pictures taken by myself and Reinet on this page, on page 9, and on page 14. bumper treatment is too prominent, bordering on ugly. The cheap plastics used as grille mesh and the interior looks tacky. The bent down top section
of the loadbox looks terrible. In the pics the bakkie looks OK, but believe me, it is actually not nice!

Ons toets die Toyota AygoDIE Aygo is Toyota se mededinger in die klein intreevlak motor kategorie en ding mee met Peugeot se 107, Citroën C1, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10 en Chevrolet Spark.Die motor is kleiner as die Yaris, maar is splinternuut en hipermodern. Hy lyk baie soos die klein Peugeot, want hy kom uit dieselfde oos Europese fabriek uit. Prysgewys ding hy ook op die regte vlak mee en is die goedkoopste Toyota in jare.Die Aygo is ruim binne, maar daar is nie regtig sprake van ’n bagasiebak nie. Dit is nie die punt nie. Dit is gemik op die enkellopende persoon, jong paartjie sonder kinders, afgetrede paar, of as ’n tweede / derde motor. Met die agtersitplekke wat plat slaan het jy ’n baie groot bagasiebak, wat steeds sal werk vir twee.Daar is twee spesifikasievlakke, nl. “Fresh” en “Wild”. Twee- en vierdeur modelle is beskikbaar.Ons het die luukse Wild getoets. Die motor kom met vier lugsakke, ABS, EBD, BAS, verstelbare kragstuur, Radio / CD, kragruite voor (die agterste ruite kan gelukkig oopknip vir beter ventilasie as die van die mededingers), afstandbeheerde sluit en hooflig hoogte verstelling. Die passsierslugsak kan afskakel en daar is monteerplek vir ’n kinderstoeltjie.Daar is ’n 12V kragsok en bekerhouers met groot deursakke. Die driesilinder, 1-liter enjintjie het VVT-i, vier kleppe per silinder en maak 50 kW en 93 Nm se wringkrag.Die enjinruim is maklik bekombaar (met die knip aan die linkerkant) en alles is byderhand vir instandhouding. Die oliemeetstok gaan half horisontaal in en moet aangehelp word met die ander hand, anders sal jy dit beskadig.Ek het twee ouens saam met my ingelaai en die lugversorger aangeskakel en laat waai.Op die pad grom die driesilindertjie verwoed en het goed spoed opgetel. Op die ongelyke Badfonteinpad was die vaste hantering en rigtingstabiliteit van die Aygo verbasend goed, selfs teen 150 km/u. Die stuur is lig en redelik sensitief op spoed. Daar is geen twyfel dat die waentjie lekker sal loop op die langpad en

Diensintervalle is 15 000 km.Die marksegment vir hierdie motor is baie spesifiek. Jong mense, studente, afgetredenes (die motor parkeer geweldig maklik en loop goedkoop) en natuurlik die “hip” blondine wat jonk en modern wil lyk. Dit is in ’n rits mooi kleure beskikbaarNa my mening is dit ’n baie goeie kopie in sy klas, maar sy kompetisie is straf. As daar drie redes is waarom dit gaan verkoop is dit omdat dit ’n Toyota is, die diensplan en die moderne voorkoms. Kritiek? Nee wat, maar dié motortjie is net te klein vir my.Goeie plan Toyota! NISSAN has expanded it crossover family with theaddition of the Juke SUV on display at the Johannesburg International Motor Show.The new model will be positioned below the Murano and Qashqai crossover models and follows the hugely popular Qashqai sibling in trying to create a niche for itself as small crossover.In terms of design its clear Nissan wanted to create a fun, sporty and practical SUV and based on looks we’re giving it a thumbs up. The lower portion of Juke is pure SUV: Chunky wheels, wide tyres, extended ground clearance and a robust stance. The top half sees elements of a sports car especially its coupé-styled falling roofline. The coupé effect is further underlined by the rear doors which have their handles hidden within the frame.The Juke wi l l be available in four specification grades, two model derivatives sporting two and all-wheel modes – The entry level Acenta and top of the range Tekna.The Acenta models feature a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre engine while the top of the range models will feature Nissan’s 1.6-litre DIG-T power plant. The Tekna specced version will be decked out with a choice of sporty fabric upholstery or a full leather interior.The Juke is based on the Renault / Nissan B platform and has a 2530mm wheelbase, is 4135mm in length, 1765mm wide and 1570mm in height. The front-wheel drive versions sport MacPherson struts at the front

Wat die motorfietse betref, was almal daar, met die uitsondering van Yamaha. Byna al die motorvervaardigers het pragtige konsep sportmotors uitgestal. Een van die hoogtepunte vir my was Gulf Oil se regte Ford GT40 (groot foto regs middel) Let hoe die motor se dak kwalik by my gordel uitkom. Dit is net 40 duim hoog!Chevrolet het na my mening die mooiste uitstalling gehad, kompleet met ’n werkende robot besig om kamma een van die nuwe Utility bakkies aanmekaar te sit. Die nuwe Utility bakkie was ’n reuse teleurstelling. Die ding is lelik en lyk goedkoop.Andre Coetzee.

BY the time October comes, the much-loved summer is well underway, and while it is getting warmer, there is a lot to do in the garden to get it looking its best. Here is a list of the top things that should be taken care of in the garden during October:
Look after your lawn: If you had laid down lawn dressing during the early spring months, your lawn should be looking green and lush by the time October arrives. To cater for the warmer weather, let your lawn grow a little longer, as the length will help shade the roots and this will reduce the amount of water it will require. If the new growth has a yellow tinge, then fertilise it with some 5:1:5 and water well after fertilising.
Adding a bit of colour: To ensure that your summer garden is full of flowers and bursts of colour – now is the time to sow seeds and plant seedlings. Easy flowers to grow from seeds include alyssum, asters, celosia, cosmos, lobelia marigolds, nasturtiums, zinnias and sunflowers. Summer seedlings to plant now include impatiens, begonias, bedding dahlias, dianthus, gazanias, petunias, salvias and verbena. Also, to keep your summer-flowering shrubs such as hydrangeas, hibiscus and fuchsias in good form, it is a good time to fertilise them now with 3:1:5 of 5:1:5 fertiliser. Be sure to prune back any spring-flowering shrubs that have faded, and you can also fertilise these, such as camellias and azaleas, with 5:1:5 to keep them looking at their best.Delicious summer veggies: This is the time to sow seeds of summer vegetables into prepared beds, such as carrots, beetroots, beans, pumpkin, marrows, cucumbers, rocket and radishes for example. For tomatoes, eggplant, chillies, green peppers and lettuce – it is easier to sow the seeds into seed trays and wait until they germinate before you plant them into the beds, or even simpler, buy already grown seedlings from your nursery.

Herbs for the whole family: This is a good time to plant annual herbs such as mint, sweet basil, coriander, dill and oregano. To keep the herbs growing well, pick them regularly and feed them twice a month with a liquid fertiliser at half the strength.Rose-coloured glasses: It is during October when your roses should be putting on a marvellous display! It is wonderful to decorate your home with roses that have been picked from your own garden, however, remember not to pick more than 50% of the roses off any particular rose plant as this will seriously set the plant back. Don’t worry too much about aphids – they are not harmful to your roses and provide great food for ladybirds and birds alike. Water your roses at least twice a week in the warm weather.
