BIO STP - SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTMODERN BIOLOGICAL EQUIPMENT
The new designed JOWA BIO STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) is made for automatic operation onboard ships in accordance with IMO MEPC2(VI) and meets all the requirements in Marpol 73/78 annex IV.
JOWA BIO STP can handle all types of ships, sewage, black and grey water, black water only and galley water. The sewage can be led to the unit via both gravity and vacuum system. The grey water can also be led to the unit for sterilizing only.

 e JOW
A BIO ST
P is an aerated, submerged, fi xed-fi lm
unit with
a proprietary aeration system that provides m
ajor advantages for the operators.
 e macerating pum
p at the inlet prevents the unit from clogging
when it m
acerates the raw incom
ing sewage and the biom
ass. is creates an optim
um m
ixed wastew
ater that is easy to break down
in the bioreactor.
e Bioreactor contains a cross-fl uted structured matrix, on w
hich the degrading bacterial biom
ass adheres and rapidly grows. e
bioreactor ensures maxim
um optim
um biological treatm
ent, and the effi cient aeration system
ensures that the biological process produces no off ensive odors.
Due to the high de-gradative pow
er of the JOW
A BIO ST
P, it is m
uch smaller than com
parable biological degradation ones using suspended grow
th (rather than fi xed-fi lm) system
s. In these aerated system
s, the biomass concentration cannot be as high as in a fi xed-
fi lm system
, so the aeration volume has to be m
uch larger, JOW
A BIO
STP has a sm
aller footprint, which m
akes it very suitable for m
arine use. e Bioreactor has a quick biological start period and is also non-sensitive to long shutdow
n periods due to continuous sludge return.

1. e sewage is led to the Pre-treatm
ent chamber of the ST
P via a gravity or a vacuum
system. e raw
sewage is m
acerated to very sm
all pieces before it is pumped into the Bioreactor.
2. In the Bioreactor the wastew
ater is driven upwards by strategically
placed aerators over alternate columns of the m
atrix and it fl ows
downw
ards in the adjacent column. In this w
ay, the effl uent moves
in a serpentine fashion through the whole of the Bioreactor to
ensure maxim
um contact tim
e and optimum
biological treatment.
e sludge in the bottom of the bioreactor is led back to the pre-
treatment tank and is m
acerated again.
3. In the end of the biological process the water spills over into
the settling chamber. e rem
aining suspended solids are removed
into the specially designed settling chamber. e settled solids are
returned back to the pre-treatment cham
ber by a solids airlift.
4. e treated water w
ith very low values of BO
D and SS is sterilized
with chlorine or by U
V light before it is pum
ped overboard.
