NEXT SUNDAY’S LITURGY
PENTECOST SUNDAY
ALL ARE SENT
Fifty days after Easter
Sunday we celebrate the
fulfillment of all God’s promises
in the feast of Pentecost, a
feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of
the church. One last time we are reminded that we
Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our
own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian
vocation.
The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost
is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of
the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for
this Sunday help us to understand what it means to
live out our Christian vocation. Paul’s letter shows us
the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us.
John’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his
disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through
the power of the Holy Spirit. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

4 St. Thomas More Catholic Community · Henderson, NV
Our parish community congratulates
CHARLES and YEN (NGUYEN) LI
JONATHAN and RICHELLE (ADEVA) TOGANS
who recently celebrated the sacrament of
Matrimony. We as a parish pledge our support and
prayers as they grow with us in living out this
important sacrament of commitment.
Several years ago, the Minneapolis-based Search Institute sponsored a study of over
five hundred youth ministers across the country. Nine out of ten congregations researched
reported having trouble holding on to teens for youth ministry efforts. The study proposed
that what young people want is caring relationships and community experiences with
mentoring adults and peers. It seems that just when young people need the church’s
mentoring the most, the church is not there for them.
Dr. Merton Strommen, founder of the Search Institute and leading expert in the area of youth ministry, wrote the
classic The Five Cries of Youth in which he likened the loud cry coming from adolescents as the cry of the
“psychological orphan.” A psychological orphan is a young person who may very well have two living biological
parents, but who nonetheless feels that he or she does not have a loving, caring parent or an adult figure to lead
and guide him or her. Strommen speaks further of the absence of “marker” adults in young people’s lives today
and he feels that the best ministry parishes can offer teens is to teach parents how to be “markers” for their
children.
And so congratulations to all the moms and to all the women who have shown someone a mother’s love as we
celebrate Mother’s Day and who really strive to be markers and mentors and heroes for their kids. A real
technology for effective relationships is needed for those who seek to be good spouses and parents, the
technology of qualitative and quantitative time, touch, communication, forgiveness, reconciliation, and win-win
efforts. And besides these skills, there needs to be an over-all commitment to live these values and disciplines all
the time. So moms, keep on keepin’ on when it comes to these disciplines of love. Let’s not be naïve to the realities
that Strommen points out. Much today gets in the way of effective parenting – tension, finances, work, the list
goes on. But nothing is as important as one’s marriage and family.
Motherhood extends far beyond the biological to encompass the spiritual as well. With all their human frailities,
mothers have come to symbolize those qualities of life that we admire most in others and desire most for
ourselves.
One of those qualities is strength. I’m speaking about strength of heart and strength of character, the ability to
keep going when everything inside of you wants to quit. Motherhood is also a symbol of unselfishness, the
ability to forget self in the interest of others. Motherhood symbolizes the spiritual dimension of life. It’s a
reminder that the greatest need in all of our lives is a strong relationship with God.
Accordingly, mothers go straight to heaven when they die because in raising kids they automatically practice the
corporal and spiritual works of mercy:
Giving drink to the thirsty – the 2AM bottle
Clothing the naked – changing the diapers
Visiting the sick – cough medicine to the bedroom
Instructing the ignorant –“Mom, can you help me with my homework?”
Counseling the doubtful – “Mom, what should I wear to school today?”
Burying the dead –“Mom, the hamster died.”
Visiting the imprisoned –“ For God’s sake, are you still in that bathroom?”
Happy Mother’s Day…Fr. Mike

5 May 13th, 2018 —The Ascension of the Lord 5
GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER
UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
May 13, 2018 The Ascension of the Lord
The Ascension is an interesting feast when you think about it. We celebrate Jesus leaving! Jesus' first departure from the earth was sudden and unexpected, at least to his followers. That Good Friday departure was characterized by sorrow, confusion, and loss. This departure has a different feel: anticipation.
Today's Gospel is full of the mighty deeds Jesus predicts for his followers. "In my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents [with their hands], and if they drink any deadly thing it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." Mark's account of the Ascension is abrupt and succinct. "Then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven." Jesus ascends and the Apostles go. "But they went forth and preached everywhere." The real moment likely had a bit of lag time. Realistically, the Apostles had quite the task in front of them. Can you imagine those first few moments on the hilltop after Jesus disappeared, as the Apostles met each other's eyes? "This is it. He really is gone this time. It's up to us now."
Mark's abrupt transition from Ascension to action makes his meaning clear. The Ascension isn't just about Jesus. It's about us. Are we ready to go? Are we ready to be commissioned? This is the heart of the Ascension message -Jesus leaves so we can go. We might not "go into the whole world," but we all live in a corner of it. The command to "proclaim the Gospel" isn't a call for everyone to be formal preachers of the Word. We do, however, proclaim our beliefs with the way we live our lives. Do our lives proclaim Easter joy?

Blessing of Mothers
During the season of Easter, what a great time to remember our mothers and ask for God's blessing on them. It is God who ultimately gave us life. It is through God's unselfish love--mirrored in our mothers' willingness to associate their love with God's and take the risk to love us into life--that we have the opportunity for life. We remember our mothers this Mother's Day with much love.
Let us pray for each of them:
God our heavenly Father, you give to each the ability to share your generative love.
Bless those women in our lives who mirror your love and bring forth life through their willingness to risk bringing new life into this world. Help us to show them our gratitude
for the gift of life and the gift of a mother's love. May our life-giving God continue to bless them
and show them his unfailing love. We ask this through Jesus, God's Son and our brother.
Amen.
THE SHIP OF THE CHURCH
The Church is like a great ship being pounded by the waves of life’s different stresses.
Our duty is not to abandon ship, but to keep her on her course.
