are vital to improve the current

    coordination and to stimulate

the nancing of health research. This is also crucial to strengthen

    the links between evidence and

    policy.

    Research Capacity

    Strengthening

    To improve the health status

of its people and to contribute

    to its social and economic

    development a systems

    approach at the country level

    is needed. This is mandatory

    to provide a supportive

    environment for sustainable

growth and scaling up of a

    countrys research capacity.

    Education and Leadership

Especially in times of limitedresources we need well-trained

    leaders to build high-performing

    and sustainable health systems.

    They will be change agents

who will better serve the needs

identied by their communities, thereby contributing to

    the improvement of health

    outcomes and health equity.

In addition we need to develop

    interdisciplinary strategies

    for a more effective health

    communication system.

How can we clearly ar ticulate

    and support the synergies

    between health and the other

    sectors? How can we develop

    shared solutions to drive

    people-centered, inclusive

    development?The World Health Summit

    2013will bring together

    representatives from civil

    society, academia, the

    private sector, governments,

    international health and

    development agencies as

    well as students and young

professionals from all health-related elds. One main goal isto really learn from one another,

    leverage the best ideas, and

    make a difference.

    Global Health and

    Development

    The outcome document of

the Rio+20 United NationsConference on Sustainable

Development gives health acentral place as a precondition

    for, and an outcome and

    an indicator of all three

    dimensions of sustainable

    development, economic

    growth, social improvement

and environmental protection.Health must become part of

    the post-2015 development

    agenda. This agenda presents

    an opportunity to rethink what

    makes development inclusive,

    innovative and relevant for

    everyone.

    Universal Health Coverage

The importance of universalhealth coverage in enhancing

    health, social cohesion and

    sustainable human and

    economic development is

    emphasized. The goal of

    universal health coverage is

    to ensure that everyone has

    access to the health services

    he or she needs without

suffering nancial hardships. It is therefore an essential

    component of sustainable

    development and poverty

    reduction.

    Foreign Policy and Health

    The links between health,

    poverty alleviation and

    development, as well as the

role of health in the formulationand implementation of foreign

    policy have been recognized in

the UN Resolution on GlobalHealth and Foreign Policy.

    Global Health affects all the

    core functions of foreign policy:

    achieving security, creating

    economic wealth, supporting

    development in low-income

    countries and protecting humandignity.

    Research and Innovation

    Cross-sector collaborations

    between global health and

    foreign policy programs and

    new capacity building initiatives
