Linguistically •Baptizo – immerse, dunk, dip•Baptism – transliteration word from Greek

Quote The clearest example that shows the meaning of baptizo is a text from the Greek poet and physician Nicander, who lived about 200 B.C. It is a recipe for making pickles and is helpful because it uses both words. Nicander says that in order to make a pickle, the vegetable should first be `dipped’ (bapto) into boiling water and then `baptized’ (baptizo) in the vinegar solution.

Quote Both verbs concern the immersing of vegetables in a solution. But the first is temporary. The second, the act of baptizing the vegetable, produces a permanent change. When used in the New Testament, this word more often refers to our union and identification with Christ than to our water baptism. For example, Mark 16:16. “He that believes and is baptized shall be saved.” Christ is saying that mere intellectual assent is not enough. There must be a union with him, a real change, like the vegetable to the pickle!

Acts 2, 36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” 37Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to

Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” 38Then Peter said to

them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the

remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many

as the Lord our God will call.”

Matt 28, 18And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given

to Me in heaven and on earth. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching

them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you

always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Acts 19, 3And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s

baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who

would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them,

and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. 7 Now the men were about twelve in all.

but it’s evidence for SalvationBaptism doesn’t confirm salvation

but it affirms salvation

Theologically •Personal Significance

b. Personal Identification with Christ death, burial and resurrection Rom 6 , 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus

were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,

even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Theologically •Personal Significance

b. Personal Identification with Christ death, burial and resurrection Rom 6 , 5 For if we have been united together in

the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with,

that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.

Theologically •Personal Significance

b. Personal Identification with Christ death, burial and resurrection Rom 6 , 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe

that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.

10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ

Jesus our Lord.

Theologically •Public Significance

a. Public DeclarationMatt 3, 13Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by

You, and are You coming to me?” 15But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to

be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. 16When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God

descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying,

“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
