JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013 I am truly honored to be your 2013 Painesville Area Chamber of Commerce Board President. When I decided to start a church in the Painesville area 6 years ago I im- mediately sought membership in the chamber. What interest would a church have in being part of the business community you might ask? The church and the chamber have very similar goals in mind. The PACC is working together to build a healthy economy and improve the quality of life in the Lake County, Ohio communities of Fairport Harbor, Grand River, City of Painesville, Painesville Township, Concord Township and Leroy Township. The Grove and many other churches in the area are equally interested in a healthy economy and improving the qual- ity of life in the Painesville Area. At The Grove, we call it being “On Mission”. For many non-profits you must be on alert to avoid “mission drift”. Mission drift is the term giv- en when a nonprofit (or other type of entity) finds that it has moved away from the organization’s mis- sion. In December 2012 the Board of Directors met in retreat to re- view our strategic plan that we began in 2011. I am pleased to be able to report that there are no signs of mission drift in the PACC and that many of the goals we set before us have been met. For example: we have established online registration; streamlined the membership packet; Improved our follow-up process including monthly calling; transformed our web site; strengthened our rela- tionship with COSE; and grew to 425 members at the time of writ- ing this article. The monthly Coffee Contacts networking opportunities have continued to grow and due to its popularity has expanded to a “decaf” version for smaller venues. One final project we are pleased to roll out is our partnership in the development of the Lake Country Chamber mobile app. There are so many great things happening at PACC we can’t imagine a business or non-profit not wanting to be a part! I per- sonally will be seeking out more of the churches in the area to show their support of the business community by getting “on mis- sion” with us. One last thing. Hurricane Sandy has devastated many families and businesses in the Atlantic City area. I have the privilege to be connected to a disaster relief or- ganization that is setting up a re- covery center as I write this. I have a vision of PACC members rallying around the business community in Atlantic City by going there some- time early this year to assist in their rebuilding efforts. I will have more details soon about how you can participate. It is going to be a great year. I hope you won’t hesi- tate to call any of our board mem- bers with needs or concerns, we are here to serve you! Making great businesses greater!

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013

I am truly honored to be your 2013 Painesville Area Chamber of Commerce Board President. When I decided to start a church in the Painesville area 6 years ago I im-mediately sought membership in the chamber. The Grove and many other churches in the area are equally interested in a healthy economy and improving the qual-ity of life in the Painesville Area.

At The Grove, we call it being “On Mission”. For many non-profits you

must be on alert to avoid “mission drift”. Mission drift is the term giv-en when a nonprofit (or other type of entity) finds that it has moved away from the organization’s mis-sion. In December 2012 the Board of Directors met in retreat to re-view our strategic plan that we began in 2011. I am pleased to be able to report that there are no signs of mission drift in the PACC and that many of the goals we set before us have been met. For example: we have established online registration; streamlined the membership packet; Improved our follow-up process including monthly calling; transformed our web site; strengthened our rela-tionship with COSE; and grew to 425 members at the time of writ-ing this article. The monthly Coffee Contacts networking opportunities have continued to grow and due to its popularity has expanded to a “decaf” version for smaller venues. One final project we are pleased to roll out is our partnership in the development of the Lake Country Chamber mobile app.

There are so many great things happening at PACC we can’t

imagine a business or non-profit not wanting to be a part! I per-sonally will be seeking out more of the churches in the area to show their support of the business community by getting “on mis-sion” with us.

One last thing. Hurricane Sandy has devastated many families and businesses in the Atlantic City area. I have the privilege to be connected to a disaster relief or-ganization that is setting up a re-covery center as I write this. When I was young, my parents always remarked how quickly the years went by. Now that I am older, I understand what they meant. 2012 just flew by. Unfortunately (or fortunately), the Presidency is only a one year term. I don’t get the sec-ond term to really define my legacy, but I think my simplicity

Outgoing President Message

What just happened?(Also, if you are reading this, the Mayans were wrong.)

will stick with the Chamber for many years to come.

My mantra this past year was very simple; I asked that every-one give 10% more. I know I asked for a simple increase in all of our efforts, but I can definitely say that there was a 100% in-crease in excitement, both in our events and behind the scenes.

I am grateful for the entire Board of Directors. I could indi-vidually thank every member of the Board of Directors for their efforts this past year, but that would take all of the space al-

lotted for this newsletter. What makes this board great is that everyone takes their little part, so that the work is divided.

We have set a lot of little proj-ects in place this year, which I hope that the future PACC members will benefit from. One of the lessons of my youth was to always leave a place in bet-ter condition than when you arrived. My challenge to the future leaders of the PACC is to remember that way of thinking.

I am honored to take my place amongst the previous Past

Presidents of the PACC. This is an illustrious group of people, whom I have always looked up to as pillars of our community. I look forward to handing over the gavel (which may need to be retired) to next year’s Presi-dent Jeff Sivyer. Best wishes.

Sincerely yours,Tony Pochiro, PresidentPainesville Area Chamber of Commerce

N. Jean Makesh, president and CEO of Lantern of Madison, developed what’s called the Aqua Lily program three months ago. He said it was designed to prolong the stages of de-mentia and Alzheimer’s by having his clients become accustomed to a routine through repetition, while providing them with a stress-free environment.

“The objective of Aqua Lily is to enable our clients to function at their best ability,” Makesh said. Innovative efforts like these are what helped Lantern of Madison, under Makesh’s leadership, earn the 2012 Lake-Geauga Fast Track 50 Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Cornerstone IT was sought as a contributing author because of their proven dedication and leadership in small business IT.

Ray Paganini’s article focuses on the security concerns that today’s small business owners are facing such as system vulnerabilities and potential network disasters, and examines cloud computing as a productive method of disaster recovery that helps minimize these concerns while streamlining IT operations.

Security in the Cloud for Small Businesses concludes with an outline of key criteria to consider when selecting a cloud services provider and includes a link to a cloud computing eGuide offering advice and insights to small businesses considering cloud technology.

Going Green: Magnus Inter-national Group Founder Eric Lofquist Named Ernst & Young National Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2012 Distribution and Manufacturing Category Award Winner

Lofquist honored for his leader-ship in transforming vegetable oils and naturally derived emul-sions into sustainable global products

Eric Lofquist, Founder of Mag-nus International Group, has been named the Ernst & Young National Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2012 Distribution and Manufacturing Category Award winner. The Ernst & Young En-trepreneur Of The Year Award is the country’s most prestigious business award for entrepre-neurs.

The award encourages entre-preneurial activity and recog-nizes leaders and visionaries who demonstrate innovation, financial success and personal commitment as they create and build world-class businesses.

Lofquist was recognized for his reputation as an innova-tor in the sustainable products market, reshaping the way raw materials are recovered and repurposed into natural waxes and renewable fuels. He has garnered attention from many Fortune 500 companies who have publically announced their focus on aggressive sustainabil-ity goals.

He was honored at the Entre-preneur Of The Year gala, the culminating event of the Ernst & Young Strategic Growth Fo-rum® in Palm Springs, Calif. The Forum is the nation’s premier gathering of high-growth, mar-ket-leading companies.

Awards were given in nine ad-ditional categories. All Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Award winners were selected by an independent panel of judges from 244 regional award recipients.

Editorial insert from Magnus: Since 1988, only three na-tional Entrepreneur Of The Year award-winners have come from Northeast Ohio. Eric is one of those. This year’s award recipi-ents alone were chosen from an initial field of close to 2,000 of the best and brightest U.S. en-trepreneurs in ten categories.

“Entrepreneurs like Eric Lofquist see unmet needs and opportuni-ties in the market and in so do-ing drive innovation and make significant contributions to our U.S. economy by harnessing the skilled workforce in their own backyard to create local jobs,” said Bryan Pearce, Americas Di-rector, Entrepreneur Of The Year, Ernst & Young LLP.

“Lofquist’s unique style and production expertise has broad appeal to companies’ sustain-ability programs. He’s leveraged his reputation as an innovator to help develop solutions for

these companies so they can use their by-products in an envi-ronmentally sensitive and prof-itable manner.”

Road to Becoming an Entrepreneur

For Lofquist, the road to becom-ing an entrepreneur began with careers at several large corpora-tions, where he gained valuable experience as a fuel and energy consultant and learned more about chemical and environ-mental companies.

However, it was at these big corporations he also learned that advancement was based more on years of service rather than performance or merit.

It was this kind of culture that led Lofquist to believe he could start a business that not only filled a gap he saw in creating groundbreaking systems for re-covering raw materials, but also maintained a world class com-pany culture.

Bringing 22 years of industry experience to Magnus, Lofquist created a company that is fam-ily business-minded when it comes to culture and big busi-ness visionary when it comes to creating sustainable products.

Eric Lofquist Wins Ernst & YoungNational Entrepreneur Of The Year

Encouraging Investors to Believe in the Vision

Lofquist funded Magnus through a combination of per-sonal finances and debt financ-ing from regional banks. In the beginning it was difficult to convince banks and customers to believe in Magnus’ capabili-ties and Lofquist’s vision.

However, a large return on in-vested capital allowed the com-pany the ability to move beyond its focus on all-natural waxes and renewable fuels to produce, package and distribute custom, all-natural animal feeds for the dairy, cattle, poultry, swine and equine industries.

Today, Magnus companies con-vert vegetable oils into natural, renewable materials used by some of the biggest brands in business-to-business and con-sumer products manufacturing, distribution and marketing.

The City of Painesville and the Lake County Port Authority an-nounced today that the Lake County Port Authority has of-ficially taken ownership of the former Coe manufacturing site.

The Lake County Port Author-ity will now commence with the environmental assessment and they are expecting to have this step of the redevelopment process completed within 90 days. Once the assessment is complete, the environmental clean-up of the site will begin, utilizing the grant monies re-ceived from the State of Ohio in May of 2012.

The Port Authority is currently working with three compa-nies interested in leasing the 200,000 square feet of manu-facturing and warehouse space on the 25-acre site. They hope to have the leases in place as early as possible in 2013.

“After 10 years of work by the city of Painesville and five years by the Lake County Port Authority, it is good to see this economic development project come to fruition,” said the City of Painesville’s Economic De-velopment Director Cathy Biet-erman. “This is a great exam-

AT&T is Investing in the Future of CommunicationAs part of Project Velocity IP or VIP, we are investing an additional $14 billion in the next three years to expand our advanced

wireless and wireline broadband networks and to support future IP data growth and new services.

Bene ts of this Investment Include:Expanding AT&T’s high-speed 4G LTE wireless network to cover 300 million

people in the U.S. by year-end 2014, an additional 50 million people over

current plans.

Providing 99 percent of customer locations in AT&T’s 22-state

footprint access to high-speed 4G LTE wireless broadband,

U-verse or IP DSLAM technology.

Offering 1 million additional business customer locations

new fiber facilities by 2015. This investment will reach 50

percent of multi-tenant buildings in AT&T’s 22-state

wireline footprint.

Deployment of small cell technology that will increase the density

of our existing wireless network.

Project VIP Supports New Growth Initiatives

Expanding AT&T’s 4G LTE network to 300 million people, combined with its

leadership in smartphones and data access, provides a large platform for the next

wave of growth in mobility, including:

AT&T Digital Life: A nationwide all IP-based home security and automation service set to launch in 2013 that will let

consumers manage their home from virtually any device — smartphone, tablet or PC.

Mobile Premise Solutions: This new nationwide service is an alternative for wireline voice service and in the future will

include high-speed IP Internet data services.

Mobile Wallet: AT&T is participating in the ISIS mobile wallet joint venture. Market trials are underway in Austin, Texas

and Salt Lake City today.

Working with the FCC to Quickly Implement Broadband Networks of the Future

Continued investment in 21st century IP networks requires a 21st century regulatory framework.

To maximize and promote further investment, the nation must complete its transition away from legacy infrastructure to

the IP networks of the future.

AT&T is stepping up to meet that challenge by asking the FCC to start a new proceeding to consider how best to

transition to new IP-based “smart” networks and technologies.

This will begin the necessary dialogue to enable AT&T and other incumbent telephone companies to bring the benefits of

high-speed Internet to more consumers and businesses, spur innovation, enhance economic growth and job creation

and further strengthen the economy.
