The Triumph TR7 that could “It handled like a Go Cart!”: By Bill Fisher

Dan Hines convinces Eric MG never made one of these!

Iowa Speedway is like a miniature Daytona, using 3/4th's oval plus an infield road course, with total miles per lap of 1.3.

We needed 6 drivers but had 5. The the 5th one cut her big toe test fitting the seat. (don't wear sandals!)Now down to 4 drivers for 24 hrs.- all Class of '69 - do the math. We decided on 1 hr. stints and refueling every other stop. Let’s see, 4 into 24 is still 6 hrs. per driver... maybe. All was going as planned for our Maiden Voyage thru dry & mild rain, until the 13th hour - Midnight! That's when, after running the Miata 1.6 rev's @ 7,000 max. decided to launch rod bearing parts out the side of the block (only one side thought) killing all mosquitos in Iowa. The biggest cloud Harry Price (co-owner) could muster down the front-stretch with whispering in the dark silence. At least I wasn't driving, one driver said. Game over. Low on oil from the leaking Frankenstein Lucas/Mazda distributor still in it's Satanic infancy designed by co-owner... Mark Canaday. "Guess we should have checked the oil @ last stop... or the one before?" Said Mark. Heck, after each of us having to drive 3 hrs. already, and impending Gully-Washer rains approaching, it was a blessing in disguise. We started @ 11:00 a.m. and 61 yr. old fatigue was setting in loudly around midnight. Other teams had 20's & 30's age drivers and at least 6 of them - some drove max. 2 hr. stints. All-in-all, it was a good test for our 1st effort. Of the 3 ChumpCar teams I've been associated with in the past year and /12, we finished as good or better and ran longer without major problems. (I did put it into the tire barrier ... only lost one headlight, in the semi-wet conditions entering the infield.) Aaaahhhh ... ChumpCar!! Gotta Dig It! I don't think we'll be racing this month @ HPT though. I was too busy to photo document much after the start of the race... bummer! Here’s just a few shots for proof we were there. Plus, we were the only team without a windshield.... very damp.

Between Tech inspection and first one out, our team was just short a couple of drivers. And no, the tire marks in our pit were from Indy Cars previously.... I wish.

The Annual KC All British @ Zona Rosa: (Red Zone) by Bill Fisher

Somewhat sharing Testa Rosa of the Italian persuasion, the annual KC All British & Cycle Meet was held @ the Zona Rosa unique community of small shopping boulevards on a similar scale of Disney World, yet for adults. The K.C. group handled it well this year and put all 128 British vehicles under a flow-thru shaded level of Dillard’s 2nd level parking garage. While it was more comfortable in the shade and breeze, it did lead to poor photo opportunities of any car. But 100’s of shoppers stopped by and had the option of learning of the past and future British reality. Plus lots of shopping for the so inclined.

This Judson Supercharger stuffed into a beautiful MG TF.

This TR3 was parked behind me and the other TR4’s. He had a great story about the hard top. Seems he was teaching banjo lessons 20 yrs ago to someone w/a TR3, and spotted the top sitting next to the garage. After a few yrs. of lessons, the guy sold it to him cheap... whatever that is. Too rare!

Gary Emery, back to Kansas after 35 Years: By Bill Fisher

When you leave Shawnee Hts./Big Springs,Ks and receive a great education @ KU, then leave to teach for 35 yrs. in Norman, Oklahoma... what do you do for fun? Race a Box Sprite in vintage, and own a very rare A-H Big Healy. If it wasn’t for our member Gordon Fitch’s tutelage in the late 60’s, Gary could have ended-up as a club newsletter editor or parts-chaser somewhere left of Waco, Texas. After being a member of our LABCC club for over 1.5 yrs., please welcome Gary & his lovely wife Molly at the next meeting. The two offer a balanced wealth of Brit knowledge we may share. Since I live only 8 mi. away, both Pres. Eric & myself share the same ribbon of 60+ mph corridor Gary does on Hwy. 40 on the way home. Others should be so lucky. Know your apex!

I let Him drive my TR4 today, he offered to drop me off @ my house and continue. Whatta Guy! Not!

McKenzie’s BritRat Rod: By James McKenzieSusan helped me on the car by drinking a dozen bottles of wine so I could have the corks.  To prevent vapor lock I insulated the fuel line, it may look silly but it works.

James’ Bugeye was photographed @ The All British @ Zona Rosa this Sunday. - B.F.

I always thought Charlie Hartman was the Cork-Meister... now it’s a Scotsman? How do I pray next week?At least for Susan and her “condition”. No Minutes this month! - B.F.

My rotation “Flippin’” machine is kaput today, but you get the idea for our October event. Anybody from our club showing-up? Is it really going to happen? Turn your head.

Last year we had great communication among club members. This year?

FOR SALE.

If you have anything for sale or trade, please contact Bill Fisher at [email protected]

Here are a pic of the late model Rover Mini Cooper for sale by my friend Bob Stone.

Bob searched for this particular car for a long time. It is a left hand drive (very important for actually driving a car here as opposed to just taking it to car shows, (my opinion only). It is a 40th Anniversary Special edition, with appropriate badging and special interior. This was last iteration of the classic Mini and has all the latest features, including a drivers side airbag, wind up windows, beautiful dash, leather seating, multipoint fuel injected 1275 cc engine, etc.

Finished in black, it is a very pretty Mini, with very low miles. Brian Kelly has also seen the car and can comment on it if anyone is interested. I can put any interested buyers in touch with Bob.

Gordon

McPherson Scottish Festival is September 22 and 23rd.  British cars get in free and have a great parking area right across from the Games.  We usually drive down on Saturday morning.

More on that at the next meeting, this could be in the next news letter. James and Susan
