As we move towards the end of this school year, I again remind all students of the importance of remaining focused on their studies. The final Academic Companion meeting took place last week with the students where the focus was exam preparation. Please support your children in encouraging them to study hard and prepare well in the weeks ahead. This weekend we move into the month of November which in our Catholic tradition is the month of All Souls. A special Memorial Mass will be held in the St Ignatius’ Chapel at 7.15pm on the evening of Thursday 8 November and all are invited to attend to remember and pray for those members of the Loyola community who have entered eternal life. We also celebrate All Saints day on 1 November. On this day we remember the people of God throughout history like St Ignatius our patron, who have been recognised as Saints by the Church. These individuals, young and old have lived out their faith and at times have paid the ultimate price for believing in God by giving their lives as martyrs. This year we think again especially of those countries around the world where Christians are being persecuted and are suffering for their faith. We remember the living saints of our times the people of God living in this world today who by their example live their faith out daily. We pray that the Saints past and present may inspire us all to follow their example of service to others. Joseph Favrin Principal

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (IGNATIAN MISSION & IDENTITY)

Year 12 Graduation Mass & Ceremony Over 1200 people gathered in the Loyola Companions Hall on Thursday 20 October to participate in the Class of 2016’s Graduation Mass. Father Michael O’Connell, Parish Priest of St Martin of Tours, MacLeod and co-patron of Xavier House and principal celebrant reflected with the graduates on the search for the transcendent.

Fr Michael [see homily at the end of this article] spoke of Luke Beverage’s impact on the playing list at the Western Bulldogs who won the 2016 AFL premiership, it’s first for over 60 years – despite losing a number of key players,

including the Captain, Robert Murphy, to injury during the year. Luke described instances in some games of football where the players and crowds witness transcendent moments – experiences beyond the normal. These spiritual moments don’t come by accident. They require special factors that come together, mental preparation, a deep desire to do something and a willingness to sacrifice.

The transcendent moment is deeply satisfying as people find meaning on a previously unknown level – it just feels right. It’s a humbling time as one becomes aware of something far greater than themselves. The Ignatian ideal of finding God in all things becomes very real in moments like this and should lead to gratitude.

We can’t all appear on Grand Final day and take that highflying courageous mark running with the flight of the ball. However, enriching our lives with an experience of the transcendent can be achieved by anyone who tries to live in harmony with God’s ways, follows and works hard at their passion and tries to keep all aspects of their lives authentic. The first reading in the mass, “I have loved you with an everlasting love… I know what plans I have in mind for you… plans for peace, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope… When you search for me, you will find me; when you search wholeheartedly for me, I shall let you find me.” (Jer 31:3; 29:11-14) reinforces the mutuality of relationship with God and nurturing this will help us find those transcendent moments.

The Mass was followed by the Graduation ceremony where each Year 12 student was presented with a gift of a commemorative Celtic cross and the book ‘Finding God’s Traces’ by Michael McGirr. This book is an almanac of prayers and reflections.

The preface of the book starts with an anecdote about a Year 12 student who, at the end of his graduation Mass, confronts a staff member and says: “That’s it, that’s the last Mass I go to in my life, I am finished with religion. I am finished with God.”

No doubt some of our Year 12 students were probably feeling the same way, though, to the best of my knowledge, none said so to any of the teachers. The reply to the boy was, “Ah yes, but God hasn’t finished with you”. Finding God’s Traces is given as a Graduation gift in most Ignatian schools in Australia. The book is rich in material for reflection from a range of sources. Interestingly it is in keeping with the Ignatian foundational insight, “finding God in all things” and Saint Ignatius’ instruction to his companions, not to spend too much time in praying. Fr Michael‘s Graduation Mass Homily Just after the AFL Grand Final, Luke Beveridge the coach of the Bulldogs read from a book on Aussie Rules called Play On and related it back to what his team had just achieved.

I quote: “Footy alerts you to the existence of the soul. It invites you to be faithful and loyal, and just when you are doubting it, you see a game which makes you realise why you are so enthusiastic about it. You see courage, you see commitment, you see personal sacrifice, you see skill and you see beauty and you are uplifted. Footy is one of the few places in contemporary life where you experience the transcendent”.

We people, we human beings yearn for the transcendent. We don’t pick it up in our gospel text, but Jesus is instructing his disciples- while at the back of the scene a huge crowd of afflicted people are watching. They are watching: This crowd represents the burdened mass of humanity. So they watch and listen to what Jesus is expecting of his followers… And it’s true, the afflicted and everyone in general in our society have a good sense of the expectations Jesus has for his disciples. Your college focus for 2016 is actually a good summation of what Jesus desires of every disciple: Accompany, Serve, Praise … It can help if we break down the meaning of these 3 words: walk with the afflicted, share with them and serve them – in this way you will give praise to your heavenly Father.

To follow Jesus’ teaching (as Brendan Byrne local SS scholar puts it) - means that we will live our life in a vulnerable, non-grasping way. This is not easy … we have fears.

Fears. After the Grand Final Luke Beveridge talked about another book called Salty Dog that inspired his players. I quote Beveridge: “I was reading through this book and… it’s about confronting your fears…. It had really powerful messages in there. So we had 100 copies printed and we gave each player a book. We talked about the content and to our players’ credit they confronted (and conquered) their fears.

The Scriptures in this Graduation Mass Booklet – especially the 1st and 2nd Reading and the beautiful song that acts as our psalm, give another perspective as to why our fears/anxieties can be overcome. Graduates I wonder what fears/anxieties are in your heart? These fears/anxieties can be for example: about daring to be different through living Jesus’ path of vulnerability and service; about your exams; about facing new transitions.

If you slowly read and pray through those lines from Jeremiah, the Apostle Paul’s words to the Romans and the lyrics of “A journey Remembered” – you will have confirmed within you the truth that your Catholic education has been seeking to give to you. This is a truth that we can build our lives upon – that the God revealed in Jesus, is always there for you and I. All we need to do is be open and search, pray, call. “I shall let you find me” says the Lord in our Jeremiah text.

The Bulldogs team were open to searching and exploring and they found their fears were conquered and they also experienced something of the mystery of the transcendent. None of us have to go far in terms of praying, searching, calling… for the wisdom, strength, courage we need, to be given to us in spades.

Graduates of 2016 we hope you will do your best in all the challenges that face you as young people. We all hope too that you will be open to continue your relationship with Jesus and find there the wherewithal to live out his way, and so make a difference to the many afflicted ones in our world. By doing this you will truly become “salt of the earth” and “light of the world”. One final word. The Loyola College motto on your clothing is something to treasure. Justice, Mercy, Faith – whenever you remember your college’s motto, you are also remembering what matters most to the Lord Jesus.

May these words help to always to stay on track. November Community Memorial Mass On Tuesday 8 November, Father Gerry Healy SJ will celebrate Mass (7:30pm) in the St Ignatius Chapel. Prior to Mass (7:15pm) there will be a blessing of the memorial plaques. This will occur near the Chapel of the Irish Martyrs’ memorial garden. All current and ex-members of the College community are invited to attend. People who would like to have loved ones prayed for can email me the details [email protected] or phone 9433 0227. Year 11 Christian Service Last week our Year 10 students started their preparation for next year’s Year 11 Christian Service. All Year 11 students are required to do a minimum of 10 hours in their own time and a further 5 days, usually during activities week (Monday 6 March to Friday 10 March). Students are generally placed in one of three broad areas – aged care, welfare and disability services. Students can start their service during the December to January vacation and are encouraged to find their own placements for activities week and at other times if they have existing contacts through friends or relatives. Please contact Ms Crowe, [email protected], if you would like to pursue the early option or have a suitable potential placement.

CHRISTMAS APPEAL

As the school year soon comes to an end, it is time to celebrate Christmas but also to think about those who are less fortunate than us and do not get the opportunity to receive gifts like we all do. To make these children smile at Christmas, we are asking you to please purchase a gift for a child of any age and to place in the tubs in the Head of House offices by Monday 21 November. This would be much appreciated and the children would be very grateful. Your gift will be distributed to the needy children by the St Vincent de Paul Society.

Tend The Fold Of God Who Is In You: Catholic schools participate in the Church’s evangelizing mission of bringing the gospel to the ends of the earth. Particularly, they are places for the evangelization of the young. As ecclesial institutions, they are the privileged environment in which Christian education is carried out. The inspiration of Jesus must be translated from the ideal into the real. The gospel spirit should be evident in a Christian way of thought and life which permeates all facets of the educational climate. (from the document ‘The Holy See’s Teaching on Catholic Schools’. To be called to share the ministry of pastoral care in the college is truly beautiful and a privilege. The collaboration is very strong in the expression of presence in the life of the college, home and parish. More so the role is being extended in the wider umbrella of the Deanery and the Archdiocese. Working together as a team helps in achieving the goal and initiatives of the mission. The role is a great privilege to take on in weaving relationships and connections in initiating a range of activities in order to realize communion and mission. But it is also undeniable to accept that the role is difficult because it doesn’t mean only of organizing an activity but to endeavour the appreciation of the profound relationship of faith and life. One of the attempts to continue evangelize and extend the ministry of shepherding to the students is the coming Retreat on 3 & 4 December 2016 on the Seven Young People in the Gospels, at Loyola College,

9.00am~5.00pm. Mass will be provided on both days. It is an utmost desire that many young people will respond to this event. Some concepts of the Retreat are: “Jesus loved the rich young man and offered him a treasure rather than the wealth which enchained him; Jesus raised a young man to life; Jesus performed the miracle of the multiplication of bread using just the little young boy had; Jesus plan is to enter our hearts; Jesus did not remain on the cross or in the tomb but risen and is a sign of hope to all of us.”

Grief to Grace – Healing the Wounds of Abuse

Missions of Charity Visit Reflection from Adam Ammendola 10 MEMK

Most people know who Mother Teresa was and are familiar with her work in the slums of Calcutta. However, many would not know that she visited Australia ten times during her busy life and

forty years ago, established the first Missionaries of Charity community House in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Today, the Missionaries of Charity provide an evening meal to homeless and needy men five evenings a week in this house. It is a very peaceful place and the sisters believe this is because “there is a real spirit of Mother Teresa here” Last month, Pope Francis officially declared Mother Teresa a saint of the Catholic Church in front of thousands of pilgrims in St. Peter's square – a move the entire world has been waiting for. To celebrate this historic moment, a few Loyola students visited the Missionaries of Charity during the Term 3 break. The students assisted in serving meals and cleaning up, interacted with clients, and visited an exhibit about St Teresa of Calcutta. They also received special pendants which have touched Mother Teresa’s grave. The sisters were very grateful for the students’ help and would love to have more volunteers visit in the future. “I found visiting the Missionaries of Charity soup kitchen for men a fantastic experience which I was proud to be a part of. I was able to witness the many good works of the Missionaries of Charity and volunteers. The clients were very appreciative of the works of the sisters and volunteers. Clients were also very friendly and approachable, which made it easier to fit into this new environment. I really enjoyed the tour of the Missionaries of Charity exhibition dedicated to Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity. The exhibition captured the many wonderful aspects and history of Mother Teresa and the sisters. I would definitely take on this wonderful experience again.” FROM COLLEGE ARCHIVIST

Formation of PACUR PACUR, or the Principal’s Advisory Committee on Uniform Regulations was formed by former Principal John Kennedy in August 1982. The committee comprised of three parents, two students and two members of staff. They were Mr Leigh Carlson, Mrs Maree Neal, Mrs Susan McKenna, Mrs Wendy

Mugleston, and students, Miss Helen Philp and Mr Adrian Sutton, respectively. At its inception PACUR were asked to examine: Regulations relating to uniform Exceptions to these regulations (eg. Provisions for

extremes in weather etc) Suggestions regarding the enforcement of these

regulations, with the chairperson, Mrs McKenna, required to submit a report to the Principal. At the inaugural meeting held on 26 August 1982 the committee agreed that Loyola College should have a uniform which should be worn correctly. Several issues were discussed, including: The retention of the school blazer and improvement of

the quality of material used for this item When should the blazer be worn? An optional College overcoat, scarf and hat The option of winter slacks for girls Colour of the winter stockings Should the emblem appear on the blazer, shirt pocket

and bag? Mrs McKenna invited parents to provide feedback to the committee on these issues which were to be discussed at subsequent meetings.

Girls’ Winter Skirt 1980 The pattern used for the original girls’ winter skirt was Simplicity 5393. The College Archives has been fortunate in obtaining this pattern for the collection. A replica of the original winter skirt was produced by Academy Uniforms for the College Archives in 2013.

2017 Year 7 Digital Devices program The College will run an introductory session for all parents and new 2017 Year 7 students on Tuesday 13 December from 2:00pm to 3:30pm as part of their Year 7 Orientation day. At the Year 7 introductory session, students will need to have their Surface Pro with them, as we will take them through connecting to the College network and email system. 2017 Year 7 Parents and Guardians will receive a letter outlining all the details of these important sessions.

2017 Year 11/12 Choose Your Own Digital Device As a natural progression with our current Year 11 students who have been using an iPad to support their learning over the last two years, we ask that next year, all 2017 Year 12 students bring their own device as a compulsory item to support their learning. In 2017, parents can choose from one of the four options; Apple iPad, Windows Tablet, Windows Notebook Device or an Apple Notebook Device. 2017 Digital eBooks In 2017, Year 7 to Year 10 students will access mainly digital textbooks via their iPad. This will mean terrific booklist savings for our parents. If you compare the cost of eBooks to hardcopy textbooks the savings at all year levels are significant. At Year 7 the savings equate to approximately $95, at Year 8 the savings are approximately $95, at Year 9, the savings are approximately $95 and at Year 10 the savings are approximately $100. The other bonuses of eBooks on the iPad/Surface Pro are that students always have their texts with them (students no longer lose or misplace their text books) and the amount of books that they have to carry are now significantly reduced and therefore, the weight of their school bag is also less. The cost of the majority of the eBooks, including the Religious Education text book, To Know, Worship and Love ($109) are added to the School fees. We are able to gain a better deal for parents with Oxford when we directly with Oxford and purchase eBooks in a bulk deal. The Oxford deal covers all the compulsory texts in English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities from Year 7 to 10. For Units 1/2, students will be able to choose between hard copies or digital books in Accounting, Business Management, Legal Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Product Design and Technology – Wood and Textiles, Health and Human Development, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology, (an average savings of $30 per book). For Units 3/4, students will be able to choose between hard copies or Digital books in Geography, Health and Human Development, Biology, Chemistry, Product Design and Technology – Wood and Textiles, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology, (an average savings of $30 per book). Parents will have this choice as the College has been able to negotiate with Campion Education as the Year 11/12 textbooks come from a variety of publishers. A copy of the student’s 2017 subjects and their booklists will be distributed to all students this term through their Mentor. 2016 Awards Evening Tuesday 6 December All families are warmly invited to celebrate our students’ achievements at our annual Awards Evening which will be held on Tuesday 6 December in the Loyola Companions Hall at 7:00pm. Recently parents and students were invited to nominate members of the Loyola Community for a number of awards. These awards include the College Medals and the Magis Awards.

Academic Companions and Subject Specific Interviews It is interesting to note the comparison in parent attendance over the last three years. It is pleasing to see that our parents and guardians are supportive of their child and their learning conversations. In particular, this increase in attendance at the Year 7 – 12 Interim Semester Two interviews (both Subject Specific and Academic Conversations) compared to the same ones in 2014. Research tells us that ‘parent engagement’ in their child’s learning is an essential component of a student achieving academic success and improvement.

Interim Reports will be available online prior to interviews and Semester One Report will be available on the Academic Companions Evening, Semester Two will be posted. FROM FRENCH TEACHER

Alliance Française Berthe Mouchette In May of this year, 66 of our French students from Years 7~10 participated in the annual Alliance Française Berthe Mouchette competition. This competition involves the students reciting a poem to the external examiners from the Alliance Francaise de Melbourne. They performed extremely well this year, with 12 students receiving the third highest level of ‘très bien’ and 16 students receiving the second highest level of ‘excellent’. In addition to this, 4 students received the highest level of ‘brillant’, which signifies a perfect 20/20 score, allowing them to participate in the finals held at the Alliance Française in St. Kilda. Our 4 finalists: Mikayla Milan 8 ASLS, Lily-Marcelle Baz 9 ARMB, Emma Spiby 9 KLHA and Athira John 10 FLTH were all fantastic ambassadors for our college. In addition to the poetry section of the Berthe Mouchette competition, the Year 11 students participated in an oral examination and the Year 12 students participated in both a written and an oral examination which mimic the Year 12 VCAA French examinations. This year, 5 of our students received a level of ‘très bien’ and Claude Sarmiento 11 MMCB received ‘excellent’ for the oral component. The College was also thrilled to see Catriona Thomson XMCU of Year 12 attend the oral finals at the Alliance Française. In order to make the finals, the students needed to receive 20 out of 20 in the initial phase of a 10 minute oral conversation. This is an incredible achievement and something Catriona should be extremely proud of. In addition to this, Catriona also received the 3rd highest level of ‘très bien’ for the written component. We are extremely proud of our students’ achievements this year. FROM ITALIAN TEACHER
