Advent Family Activities

Involve children in preparing food for others - for pre-Christmas get-togethers with family or friends, making Christmas cookies, or Christmas dinner. Teach them family recipes, let them be “in” on plans and preparations, or help prepare and serve meals at a meal program or senior center. Explain how preparing meals fits so well with preparing for Christmas.

Create a Nativity place at home. Before placing a Nativity scene there, let it be an empty space for a while. Fill the space with things that express the longing and hope of Advent, such as a basket the whole family can fill throughout Advent with notes with prayers or hopes for each other and for family and friends. Or fill the basket with good deeds - use straw or paper to create a soft bed for Baby Jesus, one good deed at a time. Then, as the Nativity scene is placed, tell the story of Jesus’ birth and invite children to help.

Take an Advent or Christmas song and copy it for a family reading. Talk about what the words mean, and perhaps use it as a prayer to be read over and over during Advent.

As a family, visit a nursing home or someone who is homebound. Prepare children for how to go there, how to be there, and how to be grateful for the experience.

Share Old Testament stories with children using a children’s Bible or a Jesse tree. Help children draw/create symbols for each story - an apple for Adam and Eve, a coat of many colors for Joseph, a sheaf of wheat for Ruth. As you read one story each night, hang the corresponding symbol on a small Christmas tree. End with a star on Christmas Eve, telling the story of Jesus’ birth.
