Background & Motivations:
• Needs from Manufacturing SMEs
• Human-centred manufacturing: humans at the centre of any production
process, as recommended by ActionPlanT 2020 vision;
• Service-oriented manufacturing: from product-driven marketing to service-
driven value co-creation in cross-sector SME value chains;
• Learning ecosystems: collecting & sharing experiences at individual-
company-ecosystem level by privacy-preserving distributed MM repositories;
• Living Labs of SMEs: from top-down technology-push innovation to market-
pull innovation via bottom-up co-creation and inspirational environments;
• Learning at the workplace: to fast, punctual, personalized updating &
creative use of skills, compatible with trends in self-regulated learning.

Objectives:
• To develop a cross-enterprise methodology and IT platforms for
continuous education and training based on blending learning
methodologies like Precision Teaching (PT) with Lifelong Learning
and using Living Lab (LL) participative co-creation aspects
• To identify and measures the economic and non-economic
benefits at individual, organisation and business ecosystems levels
• To trial it at industrial manufacturing workplaces attended by
blue collar workers belonging to SMEs

Project Workplan Strategy:
• Project development will follow a user-centric and business-oriented
two-cycles approach.
• Each of the two cycles will deliver independent prototypes followed
by integrated versions
• Business-social and technical evaluation and feedback are
scheduled between the iteration cycles
• During the take-up the platforms will be integrated in the TELL ME
system and used for real-life testing scenarios

Pilots: To implement the flow of competencies between
large multinational OEMs in an advanced domain
like helicopter manufacturing and small local
enterprises in charge of very practical and specific
tasks like maintenance and repair.
To address the problem faced by blue collar workers in
the textile industry when they need to master more and
more demanding constraints and requirements regarding
quality inspection and make-up of the textile materials.
To instead deal with special treatments and
procedures to be followed when manufacturing
furniture to be brought onto ships, in particular
luxury ships and cruise ships, again using new
materials and adopting innovative production
techniques and processes.

Potential Trial Risks:
• Wood and furniture sector “technologically challenged”
– Blue collar point of view:
1. Complexity using technology
2. Apprehension to technological changes
3. Fear to get substituted may impaired worker’s performance
4. Worker’s distrust to be controlled by technology
– Manager point of view:
1. Changes in the way of work is being performed
2. Cost
3. Difficulty introducing the system
4. Complexity in its use (interfere with daily activities)

Actions to prevent Risks:
• Introduce such a modern technology at shopfloor
1. mentally prepare and convince workers to accept this technology.
2. breaking the technological barrier needed for its use.
3. teaching workers how to use these technologies in order to
maximize and extract its whole potential.
Notice that many workers are reluctant to even be part of simple online courses mainly
because they are afraid of technologies.
FINAL GOAL:
– companies need to start seeing these technologies as allies
instead of enemies for learning at workplace
