PREP Due to the uncertainty of restrictions and the impact of the current virus, our First Holy Communion Mass will be held in late September or early October here at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish. This decision has been made with an abundance of caution with regard to the safety and well-being of all involved. The decision is being directed to the students who completed Level 3 during this abbreviated school year in 2019-2020. More specific information pertaining to scheduling, etc. will be given later in the summer. The Level 3 class for 2020-2021 will be prepared for their reception of the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist typically held in the Spring, our usual time for these sacraments. Re-registration and new registrations for PREP classes will continue to be accepted throughout the summer. Forms can be found on the Parish website. Please contact Sister Rita Marian with any questions or concerns at [email protected] or 610-688-6590.

Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends,

This weekend, we celebrate the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Today's Gospel reading concludes Jesus’ great “missionary discourse” in which He instructs the Twelve apostles on the cost and the reward of the commitment required of a disciple. He says to them, “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me….” These words may sound a bit extreme, since family comes first for most of us. What Jesus simply means is that all loyalties in this life must first give place to loyalty to God. These words of Jesus can also have another meaning. All those who become followers of Jesus belong to a new family. It is a family where every single person, includ-ing relatives, friends and even strangers are truly my brothers and sisters. We become part of a larger family to whom we also have responsibilities. Jesus means that there will be times when we will have to give more love and compassion to the hungry, the sick, those in prison, the social outcasts, the unemployed or the unemployable, the handicapped, and the lonely than to the members of our own family. Jesus is not speaking against the family, but rather reminding us that we are part of a larger family of our fellow Christians.

We need to be ready to take up our cross and lose our life for Christ. The cross stands for unconditional forgiveness, the total emptying of ourselves of our wants and needs for the sake of another, and the courageous, consistent choosing to do what is right and just. The main paradox of the Christian life is that we must lose life in order to find Life, and we must die to ourselves in order to rise again. “Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it!”

Last weekend was our third weekend of being open since the “Yellow Phase” of the pandemic. We had a total of 171 people attend the four scheduled Masses. Of particular note was the 10:00 AM Mass at which we had 61 people in attendance. This is a 13% rise from the previous week and a 21% rise from when we first opened two weeks ago. So, it is clear that we are seeing a steady and gradual return to attending Mass in person as people feel that they are comfortable with our safeguards regarding the church during Mass. As of this writing, another webinar is scheduled with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. With our governor’s guidance, we are now moving into what is called the “Green Phase” of “re-opening” during the pandemic. This webinar will be archived for the faithful and if you are interested in viewing the latest discussions regarding this new phase with regard to parish policies and procedures you may visit their homepage and click on the icon: Arise: Restoring Catholic Life after the Pandemic.

With the arrival of the summer months, our thoughts turn toward our Annual Italian Festival and Triduum of 3 days of prayer leading up to it. As most of you have probably realized by now, the unexpected pandemic situation this year has naturally made a significant impact upon our ability to celebrate the Festival as we normally have in recent years. We will have to make significant adjustments to these days and how they can still be observed within appropriate and safe parameters. I am working with the Pastoral Council as well as the Festival Committee to come up with simple and creative ways to still acknowledge and celebrate these special days in the life of our parish. We still intend to celebrate the Triduum as well as a special Sunday “Festival” Mass in honor of Our Blessed Mother while hoping to incorporate some type of social interaction after each event. More details will follow in the weeks ahead.

Once again I want to take the opportunity to sincerely thank all of you who continue your weekly parish giving during these uncertain times. I am truly edified and grateful for your love and generous support of our parish – it means so much. Thank you!

Love and prayers, Fr. Carey
