ASU Kerr Cultural Center, a division of ASU Gammage, is a jewel in the heart of Scottsdale. This historic venue helps audiences escape the day-to-day stresses and truly enjoy a unique and memorable night out.

We are thrilled with the 2014-2015 ASU Kerr season. It features a variety of unique performances that are sure to excite, inspire and entertain you. From classical music concerts to storytelling shows, children’s performances to our Coffees and Teas, ASU Kerr has something for everyone. We are also excited to announce Ang Li as ASU Kerr’s first ever Residency Artist.

Wyatt Earp – A Life on the Frontier (historical storytelling)Thursday, November 13, 7:30 p.m. $25 premium, $22 reserved, $18 general admission

Meet the man, not the myth! The contemporary Wyatt Earp has been portraying his famous relative Wyatt Earp in this one-man show since 1996. Set in the mid-1920s, an elderly Wyatt Earp tells of his adventures during the final days of the American frontier from Arizona to Alaska. The play has delighted audiences throughout North America and Europe and was written by Earp’s wife, award-winning playwright Terry Tafoya Earp.

Story Pirates (improvised comedy and music)SPECIAL FAMILY MATINEE PERFORMANCE Sunday, November 16, 3 p.m. $23 reserved, $20 general admission

Story Pirates celebrates creative writing by students from coast to coast in a loud, hilarious sketch comedy musical performed by professional improvisers and musicians. The show is based entirely on stories written by elementary school students—part of the show is made up on the spot by kids in the audience! Story topics are as limitless as children’s imaginations. Story Pirates will delight and surprise with puppets, enlivening songs and outrageous sketches, all while motivating kids to pick up a pencil and write down their own fantastic adventures.

Todo Mundo (rumba, reggae, samba)Saturday, November 22, 8 p.m. $23 premium, $18 reserved, $15 general admission

Todo Mundo returns to ASU Kerr after last year’s stellar show, featuring new songs and a new three-piece horn section. Their blend of rumba, reggae, samba and Middle Eastern grooves has moved dance floors and connected with audiences across the globe. The power of music allows the band to transmit their messages of equality and diversity—the band is a manifestation of these sentiments, containing talented musicians from Colombia, Jamaica, Israel, Venezuela and the United States.

Tobie Milford (chamber pop)Thursday, December 11, 7:30 p.m. $20 reserved, $17 general admission

Phoenix-based songwriter and composer Tobie Milford arranges art-pop for string quartet. Combined with keys, additional vocals and powerful percussion, his new band takes his unique solo experience and magnifies it tenfold. Milford cites Sufjan Stevens and My Brightest Diamond as inspirations for his music. He is joined by Mark Michaud (drums), Tina Estes (keyboard, vocals), Megyn Neff (violin), Kirk Johnson (viola) and Grace Rolland (cello).

Bettman & Halpin (joyful acoustic Americana)Friday, January 23, 7:30 p.m. $26 premium, $23 reserved, $20 general admission

Stephanie Bettman is an accomplished writer, singer and fiddler. Her lyrics are infused with wit, wisdom, poetry and insight. She draws vocal comparisons to the soaring soprano of Joan Baez and the plaintive emotion of Emmylou Harris. Luke Halpin is a master of the guitar, mandolin, fiddle and banjo. Halpin has a long history in the music business, having shared the stage with Merle Haggard, Lone Star and The Steve Miller Band. Bettman & Halpin’s music creates a fully acoustic, delightfully eclectic sound, taking the listener from up-tempo, down-home fiddlin’ and soulful ballads to hooky folk-pop with catchy melodies and lyrics.

Student tickets to all Kerr-sponsored shows are $10. Seniors, military, ASU faculty and staff receive $4 off all tickets.

Ang Li, pianist — Classical, Progressive, Modern (classical music) Friday, February 20, 7:30 p.m. $27 premium, $23 reserved, $20 general admission

Returning is ASU Kerr’s first-ever resident artist Ang Li. Li is ranked among the top classical pianists in the world by The Cliburn Competition (2009). She has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, National Center for the Performing Arts (China) and more. The program includes works by Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin and de Falla customized with new works and special transcriptions to commemorate two 100th anniversaries of favorite composers: Alexander Scriabin and Earl Wild. Li will also perform Chinese folk songs adapted for solo piano and premiere a new work.

Additionally, Ang Li is the first ever ASU Kerr Cultural Center Resident Artist. Li’s deeper connection to Kerr includes a three-year commitment featuring performances, masterclasses with ASU students, workshops for underserved K-12 students, special performances for students and various community interactions in honor of Louise Lincoln Kerr’s love of Western classical music and in service of ASU Kerr’s mission of Connecting Communities™

Dave Stamey (premier western entertainer)Tuesday, February 24, 7:30 p.m. $28 premium, $25 reserved, $22 general admission

Back by popular demand! Dave Stamey will present music, stories and humor about living and working in The West. True West Magazine recognized Stamey in 2010 and 2014 as Best Solo Western Musician, and he is a six-time winner of the Western Music Association’s prestigious Entertainer of the Year award. Stamey’s music is heartfelt, and he’s a real cowboy.

Gregg Young (jazz, blues, funk, rock ‘n’ roll)Thursday, February 26, 7:30 p.m. $30 premium, $27 reserved, $22 general admission

A music industry veteran, Young has performed with Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Steve Miller, Jose Feliciano, Carlos Santana and more. Young was named Best Blues (Hollywood Music in Media Awards) and Smooth Jazz Artist of the Year (LA Music Awards). His band includes lead vocalist Andrea Palm, nicknamed “Little Etta,” whose voice is compared to the likes of Etta James and Aretha Franklin; Arizona native Joey Navarro (keys), Kirkwood Coakley (bass) and “Locket in the Pocket” Casey Jones (drums).

Black & 25 in America featuring Jeremy Gillett (theater)Thursday, March 5, 7:30 p.m. $24 premium, $21 reserved, $18 general admission

Rising young talent and Arizona State University MFA graduate, Jeremy Gillett paints a compelling picture of what it means to be Black and 25 in America. The play explores race, class, gender and identity through four distinct characters, in ways that are sure to strike a familiar human chord in many. Gillett presents each narrative with passion and a pitch-perfect voice for the pain, confusion and hope that emerges from each character’s story.

Cecilia String Quartet (classical music)Thursday, March 12, 7:30 p.m. $30 premium, $27 reserved, $25 general admission

European tours have taken the four Toronto-based Canadian musicians to the Concertgebouw Kleine Zaal (Amsterdam), Beethoven-Haus (Bonn), Wigmore Hall (London) and venues in Italy and Belgium. Prizewinners at international string quartet competitions in both Osaka (2008) and Bordeaux (2010) and winners of a Galaxie Rising Stars Award in Canada, CSQ performs for leading presenters in Canada, the United States and Europe.

Claude Bourbon (classical guitar fusion)Thursday, March 19, 7:30 p.m. $25 reserved, $22 general admission

Claude Bourbon is known throughout Europe and North America for guitar performances that take blues, Spanish, Middle Eastern and Russian musical styles into uncharted territories. The finger-picking guitarist has performed and studied all over the world; he has crafted a soothing fusion of classical and jazz music with ethereal Eastern influences, Spanish and Latin elements and strains of Western folk.

Ralna English will sing some jazz and a little big band with her special friends joining her on stage! English has been a favorite on television’s “The Lawrence Welk Show” since 1969 and 3 million people continue to watch her each week on public television. English started her career singing in jazz clubs in Vegas, Dallas and Los Angeles. Now a transplanted Arizonan, English celebrates the joyous return to her jazz roots in this season-opening concert at Kerr.

An original production written by world-renowned flugelhorn player Dmitri Matheny and performed with an ensemble cast, The SnowCat is the heartwarming tale of a little girl’s search for her wandering white cat on a chilly afternoon. It’s a perfect holiday show for children and the young at heart.

Joe Bourne - A Stroll Down Memory LaneWednesday, January 7, 7:30 p.m.

Internationally-acclaimed vocalist Joe Bourne performs repertoire from The Great American Songbook including hits from Nat “King” Cole, Lou Rawls and other nostalgic favorites from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s.
