NEW DELHI, APRIL 13A ban on diesel vehicles

more than 10 years old hasbeen suspended after Delhiauthorities complainedthey were struggling tocomply with the order inthe world's most pollutedcapital.

The National GreenTribunal (NGT) last weekannounced a slew of meas-ures to try to curb air pollu-tion in Delhi includingordering older vehicles offthe roads and crackingdown on illegal construc-tion projects in the capitaland surrounding satellitetowns.

Citing diesel vehicles asa major source of Delhi'stoxic haze, the country'senvironment court orderedthe city government toimplement the ban within20 hours.

But lawyers for the Delhi

government have appealedto the tribunal for moretime, saying essential serv-ices such as garbage col-lection by mostly oldertrucks have been throwninto disarray.

"The court agreed andstayed its order for twoweeks. No vehicles will beimpounded during thisperiod," said ZubeidaBegum, a lawyer for the

government."Transportation of eata-

bles to the capital has beenhit hard, so has the garbagecollection," she said.

Thousands of commer-cial trucks travel throughDelhi every night, many ofthem on their way fromone state to anotherbecause of a lack ofbypasses on India's dilapi-dated highways.

According to somereports, some 40,000 dieselcars have been affected bythe court's ban in the capi-tal and more than 90,000 inadjoining towns.

Prime Minister NarendraModi earlier this monthlaunched a new index tomonitor air quality levelsin Delhi but environmen-talists criticised a lack ofinitiatives to curb the pol-

lution.The government is under

intense pressure to act afterthe World HealthOrganization last yeardeclared New Delhi theworld's most polluted capi-tal. At least 3,000 peopledie prematurely every yearin the city because of airpollution, according to ajoint study by Boston-based Health EffectsInstitute and Delhi'sEnergy Resources Institute.

On Monday, the tribunalsaid the ban would be sus-pended until May 1 while itsought submissions fromauthorities on ways toensure the ban was imple-mented effectively.

In November, the tribu-nal also ordered all petrolvehicles older than 15years to be taken off thecapital's roads in a bid tolower toxic air levels.

NEW DELHI, APRIL 13"One or two instances of

physical assault", even if foundto be true, cannot make for acase of cruelty for the purposeof satisfying unlawful demand,a Delhi court has observed, while discharging the in-laws ofa woman in a dowry harassmentcase.

Additional Sessions JudgePulastya Pramachala dismissedthe woman's revision petitionand upheld a magisterial courtorder freeing her brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law of theoffences under sections 498A(cruelty), 406(criminal breachof trust) with 34 (common

intention) of the IPC and underDowry Prohibition Act.

The woman's husband, who isalso arrayed as an accused inthe case, has been declared as aproclaimed offender.

"I do find that she had madevery vague and general kind ofallegations involving name ofall family members of her hus-band to allege that they used toharass her to bring moredowry," the judge said.

Observing that there were nospecific allegations against thein-laws which could prima facieshow that they used to tortureand harass her, the judge said,"One or two instances of physi-

cal assault, even if found to betrue, can't make out a case ofcruelty for the purpose of satis-fying unlawful demand."

The court also said that thecruelty or torture, as contem-plated in section 498A of IPCdenotes to a "continuousprocess" and the ingredients ofthe offence were not satisfied inthe present case.

"From the allegations madeby the complainant, even I amunable to find any case of con-tinuous torture, if committed byany of the respondents for thepurpose of making demand ofdowry or any other unlawfuldemand," it said.

Support India's ...be in the UN Security Council (UNSC)

and the days of "begging" for it are gone."We understand and support India's desire

to play a big role in multi-lateral institutionsincluding the UN," Mr Hong said.

"The Chinese side will continue to makeefforts with all parties to strive for a pack-age plan that accommodates concerns andinterests of all parties through extensivedemocratic consultation," he said.

This is the first time China spoke of a"package plan".

Asked whether the "package plan"referred to UNSC, Mr Hong clarified that itis mainly about the reform of the UNSecurity Council.

"Reforms of the UN Security Councilconcern a wide range of elements as well asthe interest of all members of the SecurityCouncil. We maintain that we should strivefor consensus through democratic consulta-tion," he said.

"The package plan is mainly about thesecurity council reforms. The UN is a verybig organisation. Reform should not betaken place only in the Security Council butalso in the field of social and economicareas," he said.

Mr Hong said that China supports thereform of the UNSC to increase the repre-sentativeness and to give more voice to thedeveloping countries.

"The reform of the Security Council bearson the long term development of UN andimmediate interests of all members, he saidtoday.

China is the only country among the per-manent five to have not endorsed India'spermanent membership to the UNSC.

Sena view...he added. An editorial in Sena mouthpiece

'Saamana' has evoked sharp reactions frompolitical parties which accused the party oftrying to stoke communal passions anddivide the people.

As the statement draws fire, Naidu furthersaid, "It is unfortunate that some politicalparties are used to vote bank politics, whichonly harms the sections they pretend to beprotecting."

The minister said it was time that suchpolitics was abandoned in the interest of thecountry.

"People, institutions and organisationsfunctioning in our constitutional scheme ofthings should avoid making such controver-sial remarks as they will not help the causeof building an inclusive and resurgentIndia," he said.

Naidu said that political parties shouldinform, educate and enable people to votedriven by larger developmental concernsand not on the basis of narrow sectarianconsiderations.

Reacting to the view expressed in the saideditorial by Sena MP Sanjay Raut thatMuslims should be disenfranchised as thecommunity is often used for vote-bank pol-itics, Naidu said, "We are committed todefending and upholding all the rights givento our citizens under the Constitution."

Owaisi said the comments of Raut, theeditor of Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana', arealso an embarrassment to union ministersNajma Heptulla and Muqtar Abbas Naqvi astheir voting rights are also sought to berevoked if one goes by Raut's argument.

Shiv Sena had yesterday courted contro-versy by demanding scrapping of votingrights of Muslims, saying the communityhas often been used for vote bank politics, evoking sharp reactions from several politi-cal parties which accused it of trying toinflame passions and divide people.

"Vote bank politics is being played in thename of fighting against the injustice metedout to Muslims. Their educational andhealth status is being used politically. Thispolitics was once played by the Congressand now every other person calls himselfsecular," an editorial in 'Saamana' yesterday

said.Under attack, the Sena later sought to

downplay the issue, contending that theparty is against "appeasement politics".

themselves to be religious is actually rela-tively high.

"Furthermore, with the trend of anincreasingly religious youth globally, wecan assume that the number of people whoconsider themselves religious will only con-tinue to increase," he said.

Overall, those under 34 tend to be morereligious than other age groups, as do thosewithout a formal education, but in general, religious people are a majority in all educa-tional levels.

Other countries with a high number ofreligious people include Armenia,Bangladesh, Georgia and Morocco ? all at93 per cent.

Japan (13 per cent), Sweden (19 per cent)and the Czech Republic (23 per cent) areamong the other least religious countries.

The UK also stood out as less religious, with just 30 per cent of the population call-ing themselves religious in comparison with53 per cent saying they were not.

'If Netaji...1945. "My father never believed Netaji

died in the plane crash," Mr Bose said.Files declassified recently revealed that

the Intelligence Bureau kept relatives ofNetaji under close surveillance between1948 and 1968. India's first prime ministerJawaharlal Nehru was in power for 16 ofthose years.

Mr Bose said his family believed the"only threat" to Jawaharlal Nehru wasSubhas Chandra Bose. "If Netaji were real-ly dead and perished in the air crash thenwhy all this? Obviously there was some ele-ment of fact that Bose was alive, lurkingaround somewhere and would make anappearance," he said.

The declassified files have revealed thatNetaji's nephews Sisir Kumar Bose andAmiya Nath Bose - sons of his brother SaratChandra Bose - were closely monitored.

Intelligence Bureau officials allegedlyintercepted and copied letters written by theBose family and even trailed them on for-eign tours.

Netaji quit the Congress party beforeIndependence over differences with MrNehru and Mahatma Gandhi and launchedhis Indian National Army to fight againstBritish rule. But he was said to have died onAugust 18, 1945, two years before Indiawon freedom.

Netaji's death has been one of the mostenduring mysteries in India's history andhas been debated for decades. ArdhenduBose said, "The conjecture is Subhas Bosewas made to disappear in Siberia under thepowers that be in India at that time."

Any Future...Parrikar said the PM's decision came after

the commercial negotiation went into a"vortex," but stopped short of saying thegovernment had scrapped the negotiationfor a contract with Dassault, worth up to$20 billion.

On the weekend, Mr Parrikar had said thatIndia will not receive its first Rafale fighterjet for up to two and a half years and trickyissues including pricing must still beworked out. While the order is meant to bedelivered as soon as possible, terms andconditions of the deal - estimated at about$4.25 billion - have yet to be worked out.

India and France have negotiated forRafale fighters for three years. A 2012agreement to buy 126 jets stalled over costand a dispute over the assembly of 108 air-craft in India.

Half of India's fighters are due to retire by2024. Military officials have warned thatthe air force's reliance on a disparate fleetof Russian-made MiG and French Miragefighters, along with modern Russian SukhoiSu-30s, has made it vulnerable.

The Rafale fighters are expected toreplace some of the MiGs and Mirage jets.

Finance Minister...likely to focus on the steps needed to give

a push to the global economy.Mr Jaitley, sources said, will leave for the

US on the night of April 14, and will beback on April 20. The three-day SpringMeetings will begin from April 17.

India is likely to figure prominently at themeeting. International Monetary Fund(IMF) Managing Director ChristineLagarde had described the country as a'growth bright spot' during her visit lastmonth.

"Forecasts for most emerging and devel-oping economies are slightly worse thanlast year...(but) India is a growth brightspot," she had said.

China is slowing, Brazil is stagnating, many parts of the Middle East are besetwith political and economic turmoil andRussia is experiencing economic difficul-ties, she added.

India is expected to emerge as the fastestgrowing economy overtaking China in thecurrent financial year, as per projection bythe Asian Development Bank (ADB).

It has projected that India will grow by7.8 per cent in the current fiscal and 8.2 percent in 2016-17.

India is also likely to press for speedingup of IMF quota reforms to give more sayto emerging economies in the multilateralbody.

Emerging counties, like India, China,Brazil and Russia have been asking forincreased voting rights in IMF, whichwould reflect their growing share in worldeconomy.

The quota reform, once implemented, willincrease India's voting share from the cur-rent 2.44 per cent to 2.75 per cent, follow-ing which the country will become theeighth largest quota holder at the IMF, upfrom the 11th position.

When a change comes, we don't need toworry that it will be negative. We have tochange, if we don't, then we will lagbehind," Mr Prabhu said.

He, however, did not elaborate on thechanges that the Indian Railways need tofocus on.

"We have the potential to run theRailways efficiently. We can increase thespeed and expand direction. The people ofthe country should take pride in IndianRailways," the minister said.

Citing the example of China, he saidIndian Railways should also grow in similarmanner to contribute to the country's econ-omy.

"Change shoud not happen for the sake ofchange. This will be dangerous. We need tointrospect where change is required," hesaid.

Mr Prabhu also said holding the NationalAwards Function in Guwahati for the firsttime signifies the NDA gvoernment's thrustto improve connectivity to the North East.

"The eight states of the North East are farmore important than many other states ofthe country," he added.

Yoga Guru ....meeting.The government plans to make it official

and felicitate Ramdev in a grand ceremonyin Panchkula on April 21.

Sources say the saffron-robed yogateacher will now be entitled to a ministerialbungalow and salary. Even now, he is givena car with a beacon, security personnel andan escort vehicle whenever he visits thestate.

The ruling BJP had recently been sharplyattacked in the assembly by the oppositionCongress for "going out of its way" toappease Ramdev.

The state government has said that the 49-year-old yoga guru will supervise the set-ting up of an ayurvedic hospital and anherbal forest spread over thousands of acresof land. Yoga could also become a compul-sory subject in schools in the state.

Ramdev, who supported the BJP's nation-al election campaign last year, was namedHaryana's brand ambassador soon after theparty took charge in the state.

The BJP and Prime Minister NarendraModi have given prime importance to yoga.

Last week, PM Modi launched a portal forInternational Day of Yoga while visiting theUNESCO headquarters in France. The UNdeclared June 21 as World Yoga Day soonafter PM Modi suggested it in his address tothe UN general assembly last year.

Ardhendu, a former Bombay Dyeingmodel, who owns a leather business, wasborn in Mumbai. His father SaileshChandra, who died in 1984, was Netaji'syounger brother.

Asked if his late father, who stayed inWorli here, was aware that he was beingsnooped upon, Ardhendu said, "Yes. He toldme so."

"The suspicion was there. When thesnooping and phone tapping was going on,they (my family members) knew they werebeing snooped, watched at," he said.

"He (my father) told me that someone toldhim the phone was tapped," Ardhendu said.

"Someone from an intelligence agencyhad also told him the phone was tapped," asource close to Ardhendu said.

This development occurred after the apexbody examined the feasibility of this fact.

The original petition in this case was filedby Nagender Chindam, who is the chairmanof Pravasi Bharat.

"To see our struggle move another stepcloser to its goal is a matter of huge pridefor us. I am so grateful to the apex court fortaking up this issue. We are very hopefulthat everything will work out in our favour,"said Chindam.

The government, in the previous hearinginformed the Supreme Court that it accept-ed the Election Commission's (EC) viewthat the option of voting through proxy oran e-postal ballot system could be consid-ered for NRIs who want to cast their voteduring elections in India.

It also added that the proposal was accept-ed by the government in letter and spirit andthat a committee had been set up to devisethe modalities of its implementation.

Earlier, an EC panel had recommendedallowing voting for the NRIs through proxyand e-postal ballot. The poll panel had ruledout the possibility of allowing NRIs to votethrough the Internet or at diplomatic mis-sions abroad for the time being.

In a report submitted to the SupremeCourt, the EC had said " The option of vot-ing through proxy appointed by overseaselector as well as "e-postal ballot, whereblank postal ballot paper is transferred elec-tronically to the NRI and returned by postcan be considered."

The EC report was submitted by a com-mittee formed to look into the issue follow-ing a Supreme Court order.

According to the EC, the e-postal ballotsystem has almost no risk of manipulation, rigging or violation of secrecy.

The EC had said the system can be initial-ly tried in "one or two constituencies inelections to the legislative Assemblies".

It added that the system can then be"scaled up to more Assembly elections andfinally Parliamentary elections if found fea-sible, practicable and meeting the objec-tives of free and fair elections."

BY SHIV VISVANATHAN

Sometimes when you get up inthe morning and reach for thenewspaper wondering what the

world has in store, you occasionallysavour a moment which is moreheart-warming than having a cup ofcoffee. I just read a report aboutMaryam Asif Siddiqui, a 12-year-oldschool student in Mumbai, havingstood first in the “Gita ChampionsLeague” contest, where the partici-pants were tested on their knowledgeand understanding of the BhagavadGita. It was not the fact that she is aMuslim but her reverence for all reli-gions and the wisdom of religionsthat warmed one’s heart.

Such news is a perfect counter tothe vitriol of Giriraj Singh, a UnionMinister, who was in the limelightrecently for his controversial andracist remarks on Congress presidentSonia Gandhi. The contrast betweenSingh and Siddiqui is deep. One cel-ebrates difference while the otherseeks to subjugate it. One throbs withintelligence while the other breathesmediocrity.

Today, Christians are being target-ed but if anyone is stereotypingHinduism, it is the RashtriyaSwayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and theBharatiya Janata Party (BJP). TheirHindutva is a sign of envy, of a medi-ocrity that wants to imitate the West.

A sense of siege

People like Mr. Singh create andleave behind a trail of anxiety wherethe minorities feel pressure on them-selves to realise their identity. Thisbecame especially poignant in twoinstances; the first, in an essay/articleby former police officer and diplomatJulio Ribeiro, and the second, in aninterview of Indian political psychol-ogist, social theorist, and critic AshisNandy. Both are Christians but whatis interesting is that both are trueIndians, not in a nationalist sense, butas a part of the culture. Ribeiro isproud of being a Christian and Indianand his career as an officer. It is hisChristianity that has made him a partof India and made him aware thatChristianity in India is older than it isin the West. But now he claims,

“communities were being targeted, asense of siege affects a peaceful peo-ple”.

Both Ribeiro and Nandy expressthe confidence of a communitywhich does not see itself as a minori-ty. It feels it is a part of India’s plural-istic culture, where identities aremany, and affiliations open-ended.Ribeiro wonders what hisIndianness means when hisChristianity is beingt h r e a t e n e d .Earlier, beingC h r i s t i a nand Indianw a sn e v e rcontra-dicto-ry toe a c hother.

Challengeto democracy

While the BJP mayhave shattered Ribeiro’sconfidence, it still has not dent-ed Ashis Nandy’s. He sees it as repre-senting the lowest common denomi-nator of democracy. Nandy is proudof Kolkata and he knows that his citywill never harass Christians. He seesit in the logic of its culture and hispride is not so much in his ‘ChristianIdentity’ but in his syncreticCalcuttan past which celebrates themultiverse called the city.

Nandy has an additional advantage. While Ribeiro sees society within thecategories of law and order, Nandy’ssensibilities tell him that mostIndians believe in a panoply of disor-derly things. Hindus attend churchservices, Muslims are custodians oftemples and our culture oozes withthis syncretism. From Saadat HasanManto’s Bombay Talkies to theBollywood of the 21st century, achurch was part of the everydaynessof an Indian.

Watching Ribeiro, Nandy andMaryam, one realises that majoritari-anism is a challenge to democracy. The codes of the two systems are dif-

ferent. In one, citizenship is legal, culture is syncretic and politics dem-ocratic.

For example, as a person, one cele-brated the greatness of one’s neigh-bourhood of identities. As a Hindu, Iloved Christian festivals and enjoyedSikh lan-

g a r s .My pluralism made memore Hindu. Yet, by contrast, theBJP’s Hindutva now makes our cul-ture uniform, politics, majoritarianand citizenship, a matter of loyalties.Citizenship in Hindutva’s vision isreduced to a conditional status. Theformer celebrates the politics of dif-ference, the other can think only inimpoverished absolutes.

Listening to these debates, I realisethat the BJP government suffers froma failure of imagination at severallevels. First it speaks like corporatecompanies. It speaks a languagewhere one hears more about theAdanis and the Ambanis and littleabout rural issues .

Second, it shows a preference forthe Indian abroad than the residentIndian because the latter is capable ofreworking identities while the dias-pora has limited choices. Third, in theinclusive vision, culture is all aboutthe availability of alternatives, while

for Hindutva , it is about a space thatneeds to be policed. Deep down, theBJP has only one monolithic andmonotheistic god, the nation state .

The glue that binds us

Ribeiro makes this point subtly;that Hinduism is

a

belief, whileHindutva is an ideology. Belief,

especially religious beliefs, are pro-tean, while ideology is procrustean(enforcing uniformity). Religion canbe syncretic while ideology is restric-tive. This difference, he realises, isvital as ordinary Hindus celebrate hispresence. They see him as a first-rateofficer and honour him.

For Nandy, Hinduism is manifold, while the RSS preaches about onenation, one state, one culture, onereligion. It is a formula for encourag-ing mediocrity. Nandy is equallyclear that Christianity does not needconversion.

This logic becomes clearer in astory recounted by writer and intel-lectual U.R. Ananthamurthy, anothericon who Mr. Giriraj Singh hated.UR recounts the story of an Arabintellectual being perplexed by not-ing that his community has one lan-guage, one religion but 22 states, while India has dozens of languages,

myriad religions but is still united asa single nation. It is our similarities, and not our differences, that haveglued us together.

There is a difference in what I callthe politics of anxiety and identity.Ribeiro and Nandy are confident oftheir selves. Giriraj Singh on theother hand uses identity to complainabout history. Mr Singh, in trying to

explain his comment on theCongress president, reveals

that he has no self-confi-dence. Nandy and

Ribeiro are happyto be in India

while Singh isunhappy with‘his India’.Even hismajoritarianconfidence isin fact a colo-

nial one whichdoes not know

how to deal withsomeone who is of

foreign origin.

In fact, what is ironic is the cri-tique of Ribeiro’s fears by JagdishBhagwati, Professor at ColumbiaUniversity in an article recently.Bhagwati begins with a list of thepeople who are close to Christianityin his family. Yet, when faced withmajoritarian violence and policing, there is little to choose betweenBhagwati and the illiberal Mr. Singh. Both seem to wish away the violenceof the time by creating apologies forthe government. In fact, the questionone must ask is what is it that PrimeMinister Narendra Modi adds toIndians abroad that a large part of thediaspora treats him as the equivalentof a cultural testosterone shot? It is asif the nationalist bluster of Mr. Modicompensates for their sense of inferi-ority and their embarrassment aboutIndia’s deficiencies.

Self-confident cultures

Despite their reading of the situa-tion, Nandy and Ribeiro make a fas-cinating pair. What they find intrigu-ing is the fact that the majoritybehaves like a minority even now. Infact, one must comment on Union

Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari’sinteresting response when he said hefelt “very sad” after reading Ribeiro’sarticle about his growing insecurityas a Christian in India. Gadkariassures Ribeiro that he is an icon anda role model for the country. He isalso virtually telling Ribeiro that hehas passed the loyalty test, addingthat it is the Opposition that is creat-ing such misperceptions.

India’s minorities, especially Sikh,Christian and Parsi, have been self-confident cultures. As Ribeiroremarks, many of them have punchedfar above their numerical weight, inachievements versus their popula-tion. One does not have to create awho’s who of those from these cul-tures to create testimonials for them.

Our religious communities need nocertificates. Many of them have aconfidence that many in the majoritylack. Nandy goes on to claim thatthere is a Hindu within him but whichdoes not make him less Christian. Infact, his statement reminds me of theDalai Lama’s wisdom.

Listening to U.S. President GeorgeBush once, the Dalai Lama com-mented: “He brings out the Muslimin me.” Beyond empathy for Islam, what the Dalai Lama was claimingwas that President Bush’s behaviour, his treatment of Islam and theMuslim was unfair, untrue andalmost barbaric. Similarly, listeningto Mr. Singh brings out the Christian, the Muslim and the Buddhist in me,without making me less Hindu. Thatto me is the beauty of India that noHindutva envy can destroy. Being alland yet being one is what makes meIndian. No Bajrang Dal or VishwaHindu Parishad can deprive me ofthis confidence. I do not need theirAadhar cards of identity to testify tomy Indianness, and that is enough forme.

BY ASMA-KHAN LONE

The overarching focus inAfghanistan on political stabilityand effectiveness of the security

forces is understandable given the natureof the immediate challenges confrontingthe country. However, in the long run, economic stability will have to figure inas an intrinsic driver towards sustainablepeace. While the previous dispensationwas predominantly security-driven,President Ashraf Ghani, with his stint atWorld Bank and as Finance Minister pre-viously, is expected to underscore eco-nomic reconstruction as a key componentof state-building.

Beyond providing fiscal cushioning,target-oriented economic interventionscan help bridge the governance gap andfinancial deficits — hallmarks of the pre-vious regime, which, as offshoots of apoorly managed economic toolbox, con-tribute to a widening political and securi-ty vacuum. This vacuum, in turn, pro-vides leeway for extremist forces to movein, as established by Sarah Chayes(Carnegie Endowment) in her compre-hensive study drawing linkages betweengovernmental corruption and religiousextremism, especially in the context ofAfghanistan.

Rebooting the economy

For a decade since 2002, Afghanistanwitnessed an encouraging 9.5 per centgrowth rate and single digit inflation, butit was widely sustained by the inflow ofdonor funds and developmental aid. Withthe International Security AssistanceForce (ISAF) drawdown drawing close, the growth rate began to dip in 2013 andreached 3.8 per cent by early 2015. Withlittle indigenous infrastructure or capaci-ty, Afghanistan is set to face a downwardspiral, especially as donor funding isbeginning to dry up. While the StrategicPartnership Agreement with the U.S. in2012 provides it a stopgap retrieve(including financial support for anotherdecade from 2015-2024), along with thetrickling in of some donor pledges madeduring the 2012 Tokyo conference, Kabulwill ultimately have to devise concreteplans to reboot its economy.

In fact, at the core of its structuralweakness lies Afghanistan’s overt

reliance on foreign aid deftly manoeuvredduring the Cold War when it played offboth super powers to receive huge injec-tions of aid.

At present, Afghanistan is banking ontwo factors to resuscitate its economy: itsstrategic location and its naturalresources. Situated at the cusp of threeregions — South Asia, the Persian Gulf,Central Asia and at the intersection of theEast-West trade corridor — it hopes tochannel its location as a hub of trade andtransit activity by way of a land bridgebetween these diverse, yet immenselyendowed, regions. In this regard, it plans

to revive the ancient Silk Route. The U.S.has already drawn up plans for this oppor-tunity in the form of its New Silk RoadInitiative as has China with its proposedSilk Route Economic Belt.

Also on the anvil is the transportation ofenergy from the energy-rich Caspianregion to energy-deficit South Asiathrough a network of pipelines, especiallythe TAPI (Turkmenistan, Afghanistan,Pakistan, India) pipeline and theTurkmenis tan-Afghanis tan-Chinapipeline. Another energy project, CASA-1000, envisages the transmission ofhydroelectric power from Central Asia toSouth Asia via Afghanistan. Afghanistanand Pakistan also signed the Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit and Trade Agreement in2010 which is hoped to be pegged onto tothe liberalisation of trade between

Pakistan and India, allowing for a freemovement of goods across the region.Located in the vicinity of risingeconomies China and India, Afghanistanalso has the leverage of benefitting inareas such as investment, technicalexpertise and technology transfer.

The other element of Afghanistan’s eco-nomic architecture is its naturalresources. It has traditionally been rich inresources such as coal, chromite and mar-ble and has been exporting gas to Russiasince 1967. Though some studies under-taken in the 1970s and 1980s indicatedthe presence of vast mineral and hydro-

carbon resources, it was not until 2010that the U.S. announced the discovery ofnearly $1 trillion in untapped mineraldeposits.

The previously unknown depositsincluded huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt and gold, and critical industrialmetals like lithium, so much so thatAfghanistan was slated to become animportant centre of global mining. It hasalready attracted considerable investmentwith China pledging $2.8 billion for thedevelopment of the Aynak copper minesand a consortium of Indian companies inpartnership with Canadian companiesannouncing to invest $14.6 billion for thedevelopment of the iron ore mines inHajigak. However, these investments, like those of the Silk Route land bridge, are presently at a standstill due to the pre-carious security scenario. The infrastruc-

ture for both plans is also missing andcould take years to develop. In addition, the wealth of resources comes as a dou-ble-edged sword and could entail avicious cycle of violence if not carefullyhandled. So, while grand in design andexhibiting huge promise, the enterprisesare wrought with uncertainties and couldtake years to reach fruition.

Focussing on strengths

Meanwhile, Afghanistan could focus onits other strengths such as agriculture andlivestock. Only 6 per cent of its land iscultivated; it could increase the yield to

its full potential and help switch overfrom a predominantly opium-driven sec-tor to alternative crops. This will addressits issue of food insecurity. It could alsoharness its upper-riparian position andenter into water-sharing agreements withneighbours, especially with Iran andPakistan. It could further build on itsexpanding service sector, undertakemeasures to plug corruption, and try bringits vast informal economy within the for-mal tax net. Scams such as the KabulBank fraud, one of the worst in interna-tional banking history, should be checkedand an earnest effort to structurallyreform the sector should be undertaken.Only by evolving a robust economy willit become a bulwark.

The decision of the Lahore High Court to releaseLashkar-e-Taiba commander Zaki ur RehmanLakhvi from detention was not surprising consid-

ering that he had already been granted bail by an anti-ter-rorism court in December. The Pakistan state has, sincethe terror attacks in Peshawar in the same period lastyear, sought to convey a sudden urge to undo the earlierfaux pas of granting Lakhvi bail, and contested it. Yetprosecutors failed to mount a proper case, arguing forLakhvi’s detention only on the issue of “maintenance ofpublic order”. Without a clear-cut case built by prosecu-tors on charges of engaging in terrorism, it was always amatter of when Lakhvi would be released rather than if.The Indian authorities had marshalled pages of evidenceshowing the role Lakhvi had played as a controller of theterrorists who attacked Mumbai on November 26, 2008.Apart from audio tapes and transcripts showing hisinvolvement, the testimony of U.S. citizen DavidHeadley who had done reconnaissance in Mumbaibefore the attacks, and confessions by the captured ter-rorist Ajmal Kasab were also made available to Pakistan. That these were not properly used to build a case againstLakhvi suggests the laxity and hypocrisy of the Pakistanistate. The poor prosecution effort was compounded bywitness and judge intimidation. The still-unsolved assas-sination of special prosecutor Chaudhury Zulfiqar Ali inMay 2013 also affected it. Of late, Pakistan’s state estab-lishment has pursued a dual policy towards jihadistsoperating from its soil. While the security establishmenthas taken on extremists belonging to the Tehreek-e-Taliban in the country’s west, considering them “ene-mies of the state”, and military courts have been set upto prosecute them, the forces that had indulged in cross-border terrorism in India have been protected and treat-ed with kid gloves. The duplicitous attitude towards ter-ror has already hurt the country as the Peshawar attacksrevealed. For years, the coziness between sections of thePakistan security establishment and the jihadists hadallowed a culture of impunity to build up in the country, leading to the death of several civilians, bomb attacks, and assassination of leaders. The hope that the return todemocracy since former President and army chief PervezMusharraf was deposed could help change the status quoand bring about greater civilian control over the securityestablishment, has been belied thus far. The resumptionof diplomatic engagement at the highest levels has alsofailed to secure justice for the victims of the 26/11 atroc-ities. It is inevitable that the current approach toward thejihadists focussed on India will also hurt the Pakistanination-state in the long run.

NAGPUR, APRIL 13Former Bihar Chief

Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, who was forced to quit afterfalling out with the JD(U)leadership, today said he waslikely to float a political partyand ruled out any pre-pollalliance for the stateAssembly elections, due thisyear.

While making it clear thathe will not under any circum-stances join the formation ledby Chief Minister NitishKumar or RJD supremo LaluPrasad Yadav, Mr Manjhi saidhe was "not averse" to givingor taking support from theBJP if the situation warranted.

Discounting chances of hisentering into a pre-pollalliance with any party, MrManjhi said at a meet-the-press that he may even contestthe Bihar polls alone.

"We have formed a socialorganisation calledHindustani Awam Morcha(HAM), which is holding a

big public rally on April 20 inPatna to decide the futurecourse of action. About fivelakh people are likely toattend it and if the response isgood, I may form a new partyand contest elections on myown," Mr Manjhi said.

However, he did not dismisseither offering support or tak-ing support from the BJP toform the next government, but was averse to striking adeal with any formation hav-

ing Nitish Kumar and LaluPrasad Yadav. The newalliance of Lalu Yadav, NitishKumar and Mulayam Singh isshort of any ideology, he said, alleging them as "oppor-tunists". "Nitish had termedLalu's rule as 'jungle raj' andLalu, while accusing Nitish ofsending him to jail, had oncevowed to be a saviour ofDalits like me...yet hebetrayed me," Mr Manjhialleged.

ISLAMABAD, APRIL 13A court in Pakistan

today set a two-monthdeadline for the trial inthe 26/11 Mumbai ter-ror attacks to conclude.

The Islamabad HighCourt told an anti-terrorcourt that if the casewas delayed further, itwould accept thePakistan government'spetition to cancel bailgranted to terror mas-termind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi.

The case againstLakhvi and six othershas been on since 2009.

Lakhvi, 55, was

released on Saturdayafter a court called hisdetention illegal. Indiacalled it a "serious set-back, deeply disap-pointing."

But Pakistan blamedIndia for "inordinatedelay" in extendingcooperation in theMumbai attack trial, saying it complicated

Lakhvi's case andweakened the prosecu-tion, leading to hisrelease.

Lakhvi, the militarychief of the terror groupLashkar-e-Taiba (LeT),was arrested in Pakistanin 2009, months after166 people were killedby 10 gunmen whoattacked the city forthree days.

He was first grantedbail in December, butwas kept in prison bythe Pakistan govern-ment under a publicsecurity act after ascathing reaction from

India.Lakhvi and six other

suspects have beencharged in Pakistan forplanning and executingthe Mumbai attacks, buttheir cases have madevirtually no progress inall these years, incitingrepeated protests fromIndia.

Delhi accusesIslamabad of prevari-cating over the trials, and says it has submit-ted enough evidence toprove that Lakhvi isresponsible for itsworst-ever terrorattack.

NEW DELHI, APRIL 13The government has

said that starting today, how India's judges arechosen has been changed.

The government hasnotified a law passed lastyear which comes intoeffect now. The move islikely to be seen as con-frontationist, since theSupreme Court is hearinga case that seeks to havethe law declared uncon-stitutional.

The notification issuedtoday says judges will bechosen by the NationalJudicial AppointmentsCommission - a team ofsix members thatincludes the Chief Justiceof India, the two mostsenior judges of the

Supreme Court, two emi-nent persons, and theLaw Minister.

The two eminentIndians will be chosen inturn by the Chief Justice, the PM and the leader ofthe largest opposition

party in the Lok Sabha. For nearly two

decades, judges havebeen appointed or trans-ferred by a collegium - agroup of five seniorjudges.

The new law - passed

last year by parliament -has been challenged inthe Supreme Court by acluster of petitionersincluding advocates andone of India's most emi-nent jurists, Fali Narimanwho represents one of thepetitioners . Mr Narimanhas been critical of thenew law because he saysit demolishes the inde-pendence of the judiciaryby allowing the govern-ment a big role in select-ing judges.

The next hearing in theSupreme Court is fixedfor Wednesday.

The government hassaid that parliament'sright to decide laws can-not be impeded upon incourt.

NEW DELHI, APRIL 13Rahul Gandhi has reportedly delayed

his return to Delhi once again. TheCongress vice president, who was sup-posed to come back today from his"leave of absence," will now do so onWednesday, sources have said.

The 44-year-old has been away forseven weeks and has missed the budgetsession of Parliament as well as otherevents important to his Congress party, which has struggled to defend his longabsence beyond saying that he neededtime to "introspect."

Congress leaders have asserted thatMr Gandhi will definitely return beforeSunday, April 19, when he is expectedto address a massive farmers' rallyagainst a proposal to make it easier toacquire land for industrial and keyinfrastructure projects.

Mr Gandhi, who has positioned him-self as a champion of farmers, was seento be the driving force behind theCongress government's law in 2013that said land cannot be acquired with-out the consent of a majority of the

farmers.Earlier this month, the BJP responded

to Mr Gandhi's ETA with derision. "Areyou serious?" questioned the party'sspokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain, apparently borrowing a phrase usedwith disastrous results by Mr Gandhi'sbrother-in-law Robert Vadra in anangry exchange with a reporter a fewmonths ago.

Mr Gandhi's mother, Sonia, has said

at public appearances in Uttar Pradeshand Madhya Pradesh that "Rahul willbe with you soon."

Mr Gandhi went off the political mapafter a series of electoral disasters forhis party, which included a colossaldefeat in last year's national electionand this year's state election in Delhi. However, his party has said he cannotbe held accountable for Congress loss-es.

NEW DELHI, APRIL 13In view of serious con-

cerns about women secu-rity, the Centre, today, said it was trying toensure deployment ofpolice women in allpolice stations across thecountry rather than hav-ing all-women police sta-tions.

"Our police stationsshould be women-orient-ed and more womenshould be in securityforces, paramilitaryforces and in police. Union Minister Kiren RijijuCHENNAI, APRIL 13Supporting net neutrali-

ty, DMK Treasurer MKStalin, today, said anymove to allow telecomcompanies to give prefer-ential access to websiteswould go against the con-cept of equality.

He also asked theTelecom RegulatoryAuthority of India not toconsider such proposals.

"If it is allowed, compa-nies will be allowed tocharge extra for commonlyused services likeWhatsApp, YouTube, webbased voice calling andothers," he said.

"This will also allowtelecom companies toallow preferential treat-ment of websites, allowingthe big companies todestroy start-ups and inter-net based small businessby blocking or slowingthem down. This goes

against the very concept ofthe internet where everylegal website or service isconsidered equal," he saidin a statement.

Attempts to increaseprofits of the telecom com-panies by "surrenderingsocial gains should be con-demned," he said whilerequesting TelecomRegulatory Authority ofIndia not to mull such pro-posals and let the internetcontinue to be a neutralmedium "which serves ourcountry and communityinstead of a select fewcompanies."

Couple of weeks ahead itsApril 28 launch, details ofthe LG G4 have been

revealed with the brief surfacingover the weekend of a companymicro-site dedicated to the smart-phone. The official leak leaves lit-tle to the imagination of what theflagship might finally look like, and even includes a significantnumber of specifications.

A Google Plus user PedroPeguero Jr. (Valiant Pixels) firstspotted the micro site, which nowhas been taken down. The websitescreenshots via Android Policeindicate the LG G4 will come witha 'Genuine Leather' rear panel forpremium variants in six colours -Black, Brown, Maroon, Blue,Gold, and Yellow. Moving awayfrom G3's faux leather design, thehandset will also arrive featuring aplastic rear panel with 'texturalhammered-array pattern' in threecolours - White, Black and Gold.

The upcoming LG G4, withsquarish texture, will flaunt a 'slimarc design' that the company'smicro-site revealed is meant to feel

nat-ural in the user'shands, and offer afirm grip while holding the smart-phone. The device, like the LG G2and LG G3 has its power and vol-ume buttons placed on the rear

panel under the rearcamera. As for the dis-play, the flagshipsmartphone will equipan IPS screen, whichhas been revealedbefore, and will deliv-er 'crisp images richand authentic incolour'.

The software ver-sion listed on thebriefly leaked site issurprisingly Android4.4.2 KitKat OS.However, the versionmight bump up toAndroid 5.0 Lollipopby the time it hits theshelves.

In the camera sec-tion, the leaked micro-site shows the 'ManualMode', which givesusers full liberty toplay with shutter

speed, OIS, brightness, image quality (raw/ jpeg), WhiteBalance and more . It will also fea-ture a 'Normal' and 'Simple' cam-era mode, both of which are yet tobe detailed.

The LG G4 will house an SDcard slot to expand the inbuilt stor-age, alongside a removable3000mAh battery - somethingrather rare on Android flagshipsmartphones nowadays. While thehandset measures149.1x75.3x8.9mm, there is noword on its weight.

The Korean smartphone maker, like with the LG G3, will be offer-ing a flip cover for the G4. Theaccessory will be available in sev-eral colour variants. The pagehowever, failed to mention any-thing on the chipset of the handset.Nevertheless, looking at LG GFlex2, which launched in Januarythis year, the G4 might be poweredby the same QualcommSnapdragon 810 SoC.

LG has till date confirmed a fewof specifications for its upcomingG4 smartphone. The handset willfeature a 5.5-inch QHD(1440x1560 pixels) resolution IPSdisplay with a pixel density of535ppi; LG UX 4.0 with new fea-tures, 16-megapixel rear camerawith an f/1.8 aperture; LED flashand laser autofocus, and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera.

Google's start of theLollipop update roll-

out for Nexus devices lastyear, some Nexus 7 andNexus 5 users have beenreporting that the updatehas bricked their devices.

It is not known whichLollipop update is causingthe problem but as perusers complaining onGoogle's Product Forums(via 9to5Google), theirNexus 7 tablets stoppedworking after it got updat-ed to the Android 5.0.2Lollipop.

Though the Nexus 72013 (Wi-Fi) is reported tobe the most commonlyaffected device, someusers of Nexus 7 2012tablets have also reportedabout the same. The com-mon issue reported by both- Nexus 7 2012 and 2013users - is that the devicewouldn't go beyond theinitial Google logo bootscreen.

Despite various userscomplaining on the forum,Google and Asus haven'tcome up with any officialstatement to acknowledgethe issue. Some users aresaying that Asus is ready tohelp and will fix thedevices out of warranty for$200, but Google isn'thelping Nexus buyers whopurchased outside ofGoogle Play.

While itis notk n o w nthat whate x a c t l ycaused theproblem,it is pos-sible thatt h eissue isrelatedto ah a r d -

with the software, espe-cially as the issue is report-ed to crop up a few weeksafter applying the update. It is being speculated onlydevice replacements canfix the issue. Some users, who have tried to manuallyflash their Nexus 7, reportit is getting stuck on the"erasing userdata" stepwhile unlocking the boot-loader.

A general precautionseems to be that users whohave already installed theAndroid 5.0.2 Lollipopupdate on their Nexus 7tablets should refrain fromswitching off/ rebootinguntil the next update rollsout.

For the Nexus 5, usershave reported that theAndroid 5.0.1 Lollipopupdate caused the issue. The number of usersreporting this is less and itis again possible that thehardware is causing theproblem. To remind you,Google started rolling outthe latest Android 5.1Lollipop for its Nexusseries of devices - theNexus 6, Nexus 7 2012Wi-Fi, Nexus 9, Nexus 10,and Nexus 5 - in March. Asof now, no other Nexususers have reported thebricking issue apart fromthese two Nexus models.

MADRID, APRIL 13Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti

insisted his side's focus is on retain-ing the Champions League not gain-ing revenge over Atletico Madridwhen the two sides meet for a sev-enth time this season in the first legof their quarter-final on Tuesday.

Ancelotti's men have failed to beatLos Rojiblancos in all six previousmeetings, drawing two and losingfour, most notably in a 4-0 thrashingwhen they last met in February.

However, Real were the victors inlast season's Champions League finalbetween the two and Ancelotti, whocould become the first coach to winthe Champions League four times, wants Los Blancos to be the first sideto retain the trophy since the ACMilan side he played for in 1990.

"We are not obsessed with AtleticoMadrid. We have the desire requiredfor the Champions League quarter-finals," the Italian said on Monday.

"It could take us to the semi-final,which is very close to the final. Thenonce you are in the final there areonly two options; to win it or lose it.

"Therefore, our objective is not tobeat Atletico Madrid, but to dreamabout winning the 11th EuropeanCup."

Ancelotti described Real's humila-tion the last time they visited theVicente Calderon as his worst gamein charge of Madrid. However, theReal side that will take to the field onTuesday will be much changed withfive first-team regulars back fromeither injury or suspension.

"We come into the game in goodshape. You can't compare it to whathappened in February. Everyone hasrecovered, the team is fresh and it isclear we can use a high tempo in thegame.

"We can play with intensity and itwill be vital to show courage and per-sonality because they are two veryimportant characteristics. This teamhas a lot of courage."

And Ancelotti dismissed sugges-tions that his job is on the line shouldReal once again fail to overcometheir more humble city neighbours.

"This game is only part of the sea-son. Afterwards there will be othergames and I think that the judgement

of my work will come at the end ofthe season."

Left-back Marcelo was one ofthose to miss the 4-0 thrashing and heinsisted that Real cannot allow themselves tobe mentally affected bythe six derbies theyhave failed to win thisseason.

"Atletico are a greatteam, they fight a lot, they are very intenseand we are not thinkingin the other games thatwe couldn't win," saidthe Brazilian interna-tional.

"I think it is com-pletely different nowand we have two gamesto show that we canwin."

Ancelotti confirmedthat Gareth Bale is 100percent fit to take hisplace in the startingline-up after missingSaturday's 3-0 win overEibar, whilst JamesRodriguez and ToniKroos return from sus-pension meaning Iscois likely to miss out.

The only doubt inAncelotti's startingline-up is at centre-back where the former

Chelsea boss has to choose betweenthe fit again Pepe and RaphaelVarane to partner SergioRamos.

BANGALORE, APRIL 13SunRisers Hyderabad

rode on the individual bril-liance of David Warner andTrent Boult to open theiraccount in the eighthIndian Premier League(IPL) with a convincingeight-wicket win overRoyal ChallengersBangalore here today.

Opting to field, pacespearhead Boult picked upthree wickets in one over tohelp SunRisers bowl outthe hosts for 166, and thenskipper Warner stole theshow with a sizzling 27-ball 57.

Shikhar Dhawan (50)chipped in with a fluenthalf century, guiding theteam home with 16 balls tospare and leaving thepacked crowd at the MChinnaswamy Stadiumdisappointed. LokeshRahul made an brisk 44 off28 balls and added 78 runsfor the third wicket withDhawan, who was alsoinvolved in a 82-run open-ing-wicket stand withWarner.

Rahul hit the winning sixoff Varun Aaron.

Earlier, Boult peggedback RCB by taking thewickets of the maraudingAB de Villiers, who top-scored for his side with a28-ball 46, Sean Abbottand Harshal Patel in theinnings' penultimate overto finish with impressivefigures of 3/36.

In their chase, theSunRisers started on ascintillating note withopeners Warner andDhawan accumulating 16runs in the innings' firstover bowled by SeanAbbott.

The second over waseven better as Warnersmashed Harshal Patel for

20 runs to take the visitingside's total to 36 by thetime the hapless bowlerfinished his over. The left-handed batsman hit Patelfor three boundaries beforedepositing the final ballover midwicket for a six.

Warner picked VarunAaron for special treat-ment, hitting the pacebowler for 15 runs with thehelp of a couple of foursand a cracking upper cutsix over the third manboundary. He then pulledAbu Nechim Ahmed, theball soaring over long-onfor another maximum.

The Australian raced tohis fifty in the next over, the milestone coming injust 24 balls.

Yuzvendra Chahal wasgreeted to the bowlingcrease with a six overbackward square-leg butthe bowler had his revengethree balls later as he hadWarner, who was shapinghimself up for sweep shot,

trapped in front of thewicket.

Chahal then had KaneWilliamson, promoted inthe batting order, smartlystumped by Dinesh Karthikin his next over as SRHclosed in on 100 around thehalfway mark.

Dhawan, who hit fourboundaries and two sixesin his 42-ball knock, mean-while, chipped in with afew boundaries to keep hisside ahead in the chase, andwas ably supported byRahul who hit four bound-aries and a six.

Earlier, RCB werehelped by de Villiers'knock that contained twosixes and five fours.Captain Virat Kohli wasthe next best scorer with a37-ball 41.

But Boult's showing hurtRCB big time.Bhuvneshwar Kumar thengrabbed two wickets in thefinal over as RCB's inningsended with a ball to spare.

The Royal ChallengersBangalore were off to abrisk start with Chris Gayleand Kohli going greatguns. Gayle started theonslaught by lofting Boultstraight over his head for amassive six in only thethird ball of the innings.

Kohli then majesticallydrove Kumar past mid-off,bringing the packed homecrowd on its feet with hisstrokeplay.

Gayle followed it up withthree more boundariesbefore medium pacerPraveen Kumar had himcaught at deep square legwhile going for a wildflick. The Jamaican hitthree fours and a six duringhis 16-ball 21.

The big-signing DineshKarthik looked out of sortsduring his 11-ball nine, hisstay in the middle endingwith a top-edge off a KarnSharma ball.

Captain Kohli kept thespectators excited with two

sixes.However, it was

SunRisers Hyderabad whohad more to cheer about asRavi Bopara, with his mili-tary medium pace bowling, sent back the dangerousKohli (41) and MandeepSingh off successive deliv-eries in the 12th over.Hyderabad Warner pulledoff a stunning one-handedcatch at cover to send backMandeep, leaping to rightwith both his feet off theground.

But RCB still had DeVilliers to bank on and thebig-hitting South Africantried to deliver beforefalling to Boult.

Prior to that, Dhawanwas successful in holding ade Villiers biggie offBopara but the momentumtook the fielder over thelong-on boundary, result-ing in a six. Before that, deVilliers smashed Boparafor three successive bound-aries.

Here's busting that myth, and 6more that guys believe helpsthem shed kilos, build muscle.

Make sure these don't factor into yourlifestyle plans

You may be making some positivechanges in your diet and workout pro-gramme, but it's important to bear inmind that there are health myths circu-lating to which you could be fallingvictim. Here are the top 10.

Egg whites are a smarter optionThe belief is that eggs are too high in

cholesterol to be part of a regular diet, but this isn't true.

The fact is that the yolk is the nutrientpowerhouse of the egg, containing halfits protein. So chucking it out of thediet not only means missing out on anumber of vitamins, you're also lettingmuch of the egg's nutritional value goto waste.

Doctors say as long as you don't haveany cholesterol issues, it's perfectly fineto include one or two eggs as part ofyour daily diet. Only if you are con-suming more than that, then go for eggwhites.

Cutting calories makes you lose fatThe calorie restriction diet myth sug-

gests you will win the fight against flab. While losing weight does come downto how many calories you consume, it's

the types of foods you eat that willdetermine how you feel as you loseweight and the kind of weight you willlose. If you have a poorquality diet —counting calories but eating junk food— chances are you'll lose muscle ratherthan fat, and thus, suffer from slowmetabolism.

Real men don't dietIt is not that men don't diet. They just

do it differently. They tend to includemore saturated fat in their diet, whilewomen tend to completely avoid them.

Nutritionists explain, as long as theykeep their intake lower than 15 per centof their total daily fat intake, saturatedfat isn't harmful. In fact, small doses ofsaturated fat can help them avoidtestosterone depletion.

More protein means more muscleWhile it is true that protein is needed

to build muscle, fitness experts pointout, once you meet your daily require-ments, excess protein is not going tolead to extra muscle definition. Thebody can build only so much muscle

each day. Beyond that, any extra pro-tein consumed will either be convertedinto fat or used as energy.

Get rid of saltMany men shun salt, believing it will

do their body harm. In reality, salt isrequired for vital body functions. However, if you consume high amountsof salt, consume plenty of potassium. This will keep your sodium-potassiumlevels stable, reducing the harmfuleffects of a higher saltintake.

Muscle mass loss is inevitable withage

Think muscle mass loss is somethingyou'll just have to face as you get older?Think again. The primary reason menlose muscle as they age is complacency. If you stay busy with your intense mus-cle-building workouts, signaling toyour body that it needs to keep that tis-sue intact, your chances of seeing mus-cle loss are extremely low.

So in addition to a regular strength-training plan, make sure you're eatingwell, as that's another key factor tomaintaining lean muscle tissue.

You can catch up on sleep on week-ends

Many men think they can just forgotheir eight hours of sleep during theweek and catch up on the weekends. They believe that a good 10-hour sleepon Sunday will make up for a few hoursduring the week.

While it will help, it's not going toeliminate your sleep deprivation. Thatapart, doing this will throw off yournatural sleep-wake cycle so it could endup doing more harm than good. Notonly can the right food aid sleep, itworks the other way too — better sleeppromotes weight loss. Lack of sleep, however, has been found to stimulateproduction of hunger hormone ghrelin, which makes us overeat.
