More understanding of ECB’s moves Thai shares look set to rise today tracking gains on global
equities after ECB’s latest easing measures now are viewed
far more positively than when they were first announced. The
focus this week is the Federal Reserve’s rate decision on Wednesday and the consensus is that the central bank will
stand pat. Global risk assets will also be supported by resumed
rising oil prices, despite a series of weak Chinese data. Local
factors today do not directly support or weigh down short-term
market sentiment but they are positive to the economy in the
longer term, e.g. the government targeting Iran as the next key
export market and more loan facilities to support SMEs. Pick of the day: GPSC (Bt26.00; NR; Bloomberg TP
Bt30.13)
Global Power Synergy Plc's earnings growth is expected to
accelerate over the next three years, while it has very secure
revenue flows and cash and an appealing dividend. GPSC has
committed to a plan to increase its power generation capacity
by 16% p.a. over the next 5 years to 2,850 MW, from 1,338
MW at present. It has already secured its statutory 1,917MW
capacity through a power purchase agreement (PPA) with
state power authorities. This ambitious plan is made possible
by its strong financial position after the IPO issuance last year.
GPSC still benefits from the currently low gas costs as its gas-
fired power accounts for around 80% of total capacity.
According to Bloomberg’s earnings consensus, its EPS growth
is expected to be a moderate 2.6% this year, before
accelerating to a robust 21% next year and 47% in 2018,
driven by the successive commercial operations of power plant
projects on hand. In addition to the growth prospect, the share
price offers a pleasing dividend yield of around 4.0%
p.a. GPSC’s price pattern has shown increasing strength, with
a daily and weekly buy signal along with a high chance for a
monthly buy signal to occur if the share price manages to close
above Bt24.20 by the end of the month. The share is likely to
close above the main target at Bt26.25 before moving up to
test its last-high level at Bt27.75 and making an all-time-high
level at a target of Bt29.25. There is a stop loss at
Bt24.30. (Resistance: 26.25, 26.75, 27.50; Support: 25.75,
25.25, 24.30)
Local issue Targets Iran as key Middle East export market. After
recent talks with Iranian Foreign Minister at government
House, the government is interested in Iran as a key
export market in the Middle East, following the lifting of
international sanctions against the country, as well as
cooperation between Thailand and Iran including trade,
investment, energy and transport. (Bangkok Post)

Loans to facilitate SMEs. The state-owned Export-Import Bank of Thailand
(Exim Bank) will offer soft loans totaling Bt1.6bn for SMEs who invest in special
economic zones (SEZs). According to senior executive vice president of Exim
Bank Wantana Mongkolsri, these loans are aimed to support the government’s
policy of promoting investment in SEZs and the bank had set no ceiling on credit
facilities for SMEs. (Bangkok Post)
EABC calls for Thai-EU private sector cooperation. The European
Association for Business and Commerce (EABC) has encouraged Thai
stakeholders to affirm cooperation with European companies in order to
enhance the country’s competitiveness and improve product quality to serve
global markets. Though some Southeast Asia countries such as Singapore and
Vietnam have already signed free-trade agreements (FTAs) with the EU,
Thailand had not been able to settle its trade prospects with the EU just yet.
(The Nation)
ADVANC (Bt177.00; BUY; AWS 16TP Bt199.00) rejected TRUE (Bt8.00)'s
proposal allowing ADVANC to use TRUE's 5MHz bandwidth of 900MHz
network free of charge instead of charging it Bt450mn a month initially proposed
to migrate 400K 2G subscribers. ADVANC claimed that the regulator’s
treatment was unfair since TRUE had more than two years to retain its 2G
customers but ADVANC had only five months for network migration. ADVANC
also said it would only need to use the first spectrum slot won by JAS (Bt3.70).
(Bangkok Post) Comment: It seems ADVANC wants to leave the 400K 2G
subscribers if the company is unable to use the slot JAS won. We
recommend closely monitoring what every related party announces today
as the shutdown will occur at midnight.
Global issues The Federal Reserve will announce their decision on Wednesday and the
overwhelming consensus is they will remain on hold as far as the hike is
concerned. The market will await the Fed statement as to when and how much
the Fed will hike in 2016. Most expect the Fed to remain cautiously optimistic
and April's FOMC meeting will very likely be the next hike. (Reuters)
This will be a very busy week for central banks aside from the US Federal
Reserve. The SNB, Norges Bank, BOJ and BOE will meet this week. The BOE
and BOJ are widely expected to remain on hold while Norway's central bank is
expected to ease 25 BPs. The BOJ might surprise the market by copying the
ECB's latest move by focusing on credit easing after the negative rates have
had some adverse effects. (Reuters)
US Treasury yields climbed on Friday as investors bet the US economy is
strong enough for an interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve and after
the ECB president said he did not anticipate more rate cuts. The benchmark
10-year note was last down 14/32 in price to yield 1.979%, up from 1.929% on
Thursday. (Reuters)
The dollar rose against a basket of currencies on Friday, bolstered by an
increased appetite for riskier assets following unexpected action from the ECB.
The euro, which makes up the largest component of the dollar index, fell 0.2%
to US$1.1155. However, it rose 1.4% against the greenback for the week.
(Reuters)
USA Wall Street shares rallied on Friday with the DJIA and S&P500 having their
best close of 2016 as investors embraced the ECB's stimulus measures, but
ignoring signals of an end to rate cuts, and steadying oil prices drove up energy
shares. (Reuters)

US import prices fell in February for an eighth straight month, weighed
down by declining costs for petroleum and a range of other goods, but the pace
of decline is slowing as the dollar's rally fades and oil prices stabilize. US import
prices slipped 0.3% last month after a revised 1.0% decrease in January. Import
prices have decreased in 18 of the last 20 months. They were down 6.1% in the
12 months through February. That was the smallest YoY drop since December
2014. Economists had forecast import prices slipping 0.6% last month.
(Reuters)
Europe European shares bounced back on Friday, with a recovery in metal and oil
prices boosting commodities stocks and the ECB’s new cheap funding plan
supporting lenders in the euro zone periphery. (Reuters)
Asia China January-February economic data released Saturday were mixed but
on the balance disappointing. Retail sales rose 10.2%, lower than market
consensus of a 10.8% increase. Industrial Output increased 5.4%, compared
with a 5.6% rise. Urban investment added 10.2%, better than the street forecast
that called for a 9.5% increase. (Reuters)
PBOC: No rush for more stimulus at this stage: Despite the run of sluggish
China economic data, PBOC Governor Zhou on Saturday suggested the central
bank not urgently act to provide monetary stimulus. He said PBOC will prepare
to act in the case of an economic shock. (Reuters)
Japan's core machinery orders jumped 15.0% MoM in January. The highly
volatile data series which is regarded as a leading indicator of capital spending
in the coming six to nine months, was more than economists' estimate for a
3.0% increase, Cabinet Office data showed on Monday.
Commodities US crude was up almost 2% and Brent was above US$40 on Friday after
the International Energy Agency said oil prices may have bottomed as output
in the US and other non-OPEC countries was beginning to fall quickly. The
combined oil and natural gas US rig count fell to its lowest on records going
back to 1940, according to Baker Hughes. Brent settled up 34 cents (+0.9%) at
US$40.39 a barrel. On the week, it rose 4%. US crude finished up 85 cents
(+2.3%) at US$38.69 a barrel. It was up 7% on the week, a fourth straight week
of gains. (Reuters)
Gold fell 1% on Friday, as the dollar rebounded and oil and world stock
markets rose, after bullion extended the prior session's gains to a 13-month
high touched in early trade after the ECB's announcement of additional easing.
Spot gold rose as far as US$1,282.51 an ounce, its strongest since Feb. 3,
2015, before falling 1% to US$1,259.01. US gold for April delivery settled down
1.1% at US$1,259.40 an ounce. (Reuters)
