Farewell Year 12
It is with mixed emotions that we begin to farewell our Year 12 students, the class of 2017.
With only a week left of school, most students are still working hard in preparation for their
exams. On Thursday next week Year 12 will be celebrating with a uniform free day and a range
of activities, including the traditional assembly presented by Year 12 to the rest of the school.
The Year 12 formal assembly is on Friday 22 September at 9.20am. This is my favourite time of
the school year and I’m really looking forward to next week as Year 12 celebrate their final
week of school.
School Leaders shine
As one group prepares to depart, another is stepping into their leadership roles.
Congratulations to our 2017-18 Year 12 Leadership Team of Caitlin Doolan, Ethan Hamer,
Jackson Howle, Madeleine Howle, Jacob Parker, Claire Sheehan, Kylie Taylor and Jay
Webber. This is a most impressive group of young people and they will be a wonderful
leadership team. Special congratulations to Jay, Madeleine, Jake and Claire who are our
captains following last week’s election process.
Parent Voice
We would love to hear from our parents in the Tell Them from Me survey, which was released
a few weeks ago. It is not a very long survey and should only take 10-15 minutes. The survey
can be accessed at https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/kelsohighcampus2017. I would
encourage all parents to complete the survey. In addition to the survey, we will also be
phoning a random sample of parents over the next few weeks to seek their opinions to inform
our future direction at Kelso High Campus.
Enjoy the break
I would like to thank everyone at Kelso High Campus for the work they are doing. Term 3 is
very hectic for everyone, and in particular our senior students and teachers. There are some
very tired people who have earned their holiday! I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing break
and enjoys some beautiful spring weather following this cold and long winter period.
Top performances:
Cole Mutton: selected as shadow for the Australian Schoolboys football team – an outstanding
achievement.
Abbey-May Brown selected for the Cerebral Palsy World Games in Spain in 2018.
TJ Henderson, Bailey Honeyman, Sebastian Honeyman, Matt Bignell who all achieved High
distinctions in the Mathematics Challenge for young Australians.
Cirkus Surreal delivered another outstanding performance in the Mad Hatter of Mayfield on
Sunday at Mayfield Gardens.
HSC students who have produced some excellent major works and projects. Our Industrial
Technology tasks were marked 2 weeks ago and our art and photography pieces were displayed
last Friday and were sent off this week for marking.
Students who assisted in the Primary schools Gala Day: Sebastian and Bailey Honeyman, Tait
Borgstahl, Thomas Judge, Jacob Ryan and Justin Stephens. Kelso High students are providing a
lot of support to primary schools in the area.
KHC dancers who performed exceptionally well at the Bathurst Eisteddfod: KHC company came
first and the Denison College ensemble placed 3rd.
The Denison College Concert Band – awarded first place ahead of all other schools in Bathurst
at the Bathurst Eisteddfod.
The outgoing Year 12 leadership team: a wonderful group of people, who have left their mark
on Kelso High Campus and lifted the bar. Thanks and best wishes Mark, Caroline, Emily, Sammi,
Suzie, Macca, Felix, Lachlan.
Please give me a call me or drop by to discuss anything concerning your child and Denison College,
Kelso High Campus.

JAPANORAMA
Japanese student visits in August by Ms Alliband
August is the summer holiday season in the northern hemisphere and the most popular time for
Japanese students to visit us here at Kelso. This year we accepted visits from a number of groups,
including three groups over a few days in August.
Visitors were shown around the school by year 9 and 10 students, and year 8 students took part
in some activities for the first time.
Year 8 observations on the visit included:
“they greeted us by bowing and holding our hands”,
“it was surprising how much English they spoke”,
“their uniform was so formal”,
“they seemed happy…and excited to meet us”,
“they were surprised at how different their school was to their school”,
“they loved learning how to play cricket”,
“they took lots of photos with us”,
“they got to see diversity at our school”,
“they were very respectful”,
“some of their mobile phones were really different to ours”.
We were lucky enough to host groups this August from KSKK (a cultural exchange group with
students from different schools), Motosu City in mid-Japan and Onojo City in southern Japan. All
students seemed to enjoyed the cultural exchange very much, and we hope they can visit us
again next year! Many thanks to all students and teachers who helped to make the visits a
success.

HSC Bootcamps are coming to KHC!
Year 12 students complete their lessons at the end of Term 3 and continue their preparation for the HSC examinations through independent study. This year, Year
12 students have the opportunity to participate in guided revision during Week 1 of next term to make the most of staff expertise in their final week of preparation. The bootcamps will give students the opportunity to revise syllabus content and
prepare ideas for their responses that will help them maximise their results in the HSC. Each session is designed to help students boost their exam marks, write better
responses and revise content using a range of study skills and techniques.
View the session timetable in this newsletter and see Miss Hertel if you have any questions.
The Tell Them From Me parent feedback survey (Term 3, 2017)
This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey,
another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent
surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about
different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.
Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives
on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between par-
ents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the
school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our
school make practical improvements.
The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or
computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is
completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 21 August and
13 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses
are very much appreciated.
To access the survey for our school go to:
https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/kelsohighcampus2017.

Hi, my name is Abbey-May Brown and I'm in Year 10 here at Kelso High Campus.
I am a competitive swimmer and compete in carnivals all around NSW. I hold numerous records including 6 state records and have been selected for the "Cerebral Palsy World Games" in Spain (Barcelona) in August 2018.
At this stage the swimming team have not yet been confirmed, depending on the number of competitors able to attend as this is a massive financial impact on families.
Updates will be in our newsletter regarding the games and hopefully I will get everyone's support to help me achieve my dreams competing at an international event wearing the Australian uniform.

Any Difference?
If you drop a steel ball weighing 5 kg from a height of 5 m, will it fall faster in water 20 degrees Fahrenheit, 40 degrees Fahrenheit, or will
there be no difference at all?

SMALL GROUP BAND LESSONS
Dear Parents,
The Music Department at Kelso High Campus has the opportunity to trial a small group band program for the remainder of 2017.
This program is aimed at Year 7 and 8 students only in the near future, but opportunities for other year groups may become available in 2018.
We have the privilege of having the services of Mr Phil McDowell to help us with this program. Phil was the owner of Sack Music in Bathurst and is now using his considerable experience in helping us expand our rapidly growing Stage 4 Music Program.
The groups will consist of 6-8 students of similar ability and allow students to experience and learn either the bass, guitar or drums in a 30-minute session during class time. Students will be expected to catch up on any missed work from these classes.
At this stage, the cost will be $10 per student per session. This will be payable to the office at the beginning of each term. The cost for Term 4 will be $90 per student. There will be no lessons in Week 10 of the term.
At this stage, we are hoping to have some trial lessons at various times in the remainder of Term 3 and start the program proper in Term 4. This is simply an expression of interest letter.
A permission note will come out later in the term.
Please indicate your interest below with your child’s name and class.
We look forward to an exciting Term 4 in the Music Department of Kelso High Campus.
Mrs. Oriana Zanon
Music Teacher

Maths Online is a high quality, independent online maths tutoring program based on
Australian state curricula for Years 7 - 12. It was developed by experienced Australian
teachers. The program features hundreds of fully animated and narrated maths les-
sons with over 15,000 exam-style questions to test a student’s mastery of maths. It
was provided free to every student in Australia.
Some of the features that this program has are as follows;
800+ Full lessons for each concept with a voice over and numerous examples of varying difficulty.
Every lesson has a pause and rewind facility to help students grasp concepts at their own pace.
Every lesson has an accompanying printable lesson summary & worksheet to consolidate the con-
cept, with full worked solutions provided also.
A student’s ongoing use and progress in the program is stored for theirs and their teacher’s perusal
at any time.
The program can be accessed from any internet ready site, not just at school.
The entire year 7 to 12 program is available to every student, not just their particular year group.
Given that the program covers most of the concepts that we teach, and as good as this resource is, the
school wishes to make it clear that it was never intended by its creators to replace the work that our math-
ematics teaching staff already do. This program is best used as a support/supplement to the classroom
teaching/learning experience.
If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity please pay $20 to the front office.
Regards,
Hans Stroeve

The ball will fall faster in the 40 degree water. Why? because water is frozen at 20 degrees Fahrenheit..
