From The OfficersCary Kuhlmann, President

THANKS, PAT. WE'LL MISS YOU.This issue of Footprints is the last which is edited by Pat Couret. Pat has done an outstanding job in performing one of

the toughest volunteer jobs the NOTC has to offer.Pat has worked very hard in making the NOTC magazine probably the best club newsletter in these parts. She has made

everyone feel a part of the Club by using a lot of pictures to portray the agony, the thrills, the defeats and the joys of running.

She has made it her business to keep the running community well informed of medical advances as well as plain old fashioned common sense runners should be applying to their workouts and nutritional habits.

Pat loves running herself which is the reason she has had to make the' tough decision to give up something she, deep down inside, loves to do. Pat applied some of that common sense she has been drilling into our heads and said she can't teach school, raise four school aged children, keep a marriage going (which is tough enough probably just being married to Bill-just kiddin', Bill) and still try to run like she wanted to. Therefore, she had to give up the volunteer work. I admire her for being candid to herself.

All that aside, we will miss you, Pat. Maybe now, we will see you at a few more races.★ ★ ★ ★ ★

ANNUALIZED BILLING TO COMMENCE SOONCurrently, the NOTC sends out bills six times a year. This has proven to be administratively nightmarish. Therefore, the

Executive Committee has decided to annualize the membership dues billing and adjust everyone to July 1, which coincides with the Club's fiscal year.

Therefore, beginning with the January or March dues billing, members will be billed dues which will extend their membership through June 1984.

Those people with membership expiration dates after July 1983 will be billed a portion of one years dues placing them with an expiration date of June 1984.

Then, beginning July 1, 1984, everyone will have the same expiration date. This may sound like a lot of trouble to you guys out there who just want a new PR every week, but for us in the

volunteer ranks, it will be easier to administrate as well as less expensive in the amount of computer runs we must make each year.

If you have any problems with your bills, just call the NOTC office and we will try to explain it to you.Chuck George, Race Director

The 1983 NOTC schedule was discussed at the recent scheduling/directors meeting. Many helpful suggestions came out of the meeting. Some of them are:1) More long distance events earlier (10K and up)2) A relay type event3) Keeping a short distance race combined with long distance races

Also brought up in the meeting was an item of major impact for the NOTC in 1983 and beyond. The organization of race director groups. Basically comprised of 3-4 reliable people, these runners or non-runners would be keyed to that particular event, in liason with myself. This should not be a burden to training or work schedules (once a year). Please give me a call if you would like to be in a race directors group. It can be an enjoyable experience!POST RACE SUGGESTION!

Want to help your club or another in just a few short minutes?Whether an NOTC race or out of town event, drop a line to the group administering the race and also to the sponsors).

Your suggestions, thanks and criticisms are of value to the events future!NEXT ISSUE LOOK FOR:

Linda Gill, EditorFirst I would like to thank the officers of the NOTC for asking me to succeed Pat Couret as Editor of Footprints. (At

least I think I want to thank them!) Secondly, I want to thank Pat for her help in assembling this issue (which I am sure you thought you'd never see, huh?). But mostly, I would like to say that following an Editor such as Pat, is going to be an enormous challenge. She has done an outstanding job during her tenure as editor, making Footprints the undeniable success it is today, being sought after by members and non-members alike. I will try to do the job and the magazine justice, and would like to count on the support of the membership in doing so.

In this, hopefully the longest editor's note you will see, I would like to tell you why I accepted the position as Editor of Footprints. The NOTC is a non-profit organization, run by members who volunteer their time and services to the Club. The Executive Committee is made up of members, all of them with their own full time jobs and families that require a great deal of their time. But, what most of you do not know is the untold number of hours each one spends on NOTC business during a month...meeting, planning, organizing and setting up races for you. As a member of the Club for only a couple of years, I felt that I had really gotten a lot out of the club, and wanted to give something back to it. But even with all of the wonderful people I have met, the great friends I have made, the P.R.'s I have set and all the fun and good times I have had, there were times when the races needed more. They needed a few more people to give split times, or to help set up and break down, or help at the aid stations, etc...you know. So, that's when I decided to volunteer to help the club. Now, aren't you impressed? Good, now I won't hesitate to call on you to help...at the races and with Footprints. Thanks to all. -i

We have been working in the past year to organize all the aspects of producing a race into a smooth, efficient system. We feel that for the most part we have been successful in our efforts. The courses are well marked, well patrolled, and the aid stations well placed. Races begin on time, results are given as quickly as possible. We thank all the volunteers who have assisted us in our efforts. We couldn't manage without these dedicated, generous people. There are a few things that you, THE RUNNER, can do to make the system even more efficient and smooth. Please help us help you:

RACE REGISTRATION:»^ARRIVE EARLY, have EXACT CHANGE. Pre-register if possible.*^Have your MEMBERSHIP CARD with you if it is a discount race.» F̂or large races we have chutes set up so each runner can be processed as quickly as possible.

RUNNING THE RACE:^■Follow the course as marked. Running is a self-monitored endeavor. Please do not short the course. (Cutting corners and curves is allowed because that's the way the course is usually measured.)

FINISHING THE RACE:»^REMEMBER YOUR TIME, Keep your place in the chute. Fill in your finish place sticket promptly. You must TURN IN YOUR TIME WITHIN TEN MINUTES OF YOUR FINISHING TIME or you will be disqualified from the awards process.

Thank you for all your help and cooperation. When we all work together everything runs smoothly.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

RACE RESULTSThe officers of the Track Club have been trying to give Overall Winners of races special trophies and then awarding the

age group winners their prizes. This system of No Duplication of Awards is working well and pleasing many runners. However, the computer system which tabulates the results is not always so cooperative. Occasionally the age group winners will include the overall winners. Also if there is a special category, for example: First Employee of the Sponsor, the computer is not yet able to handle that program. We are working to solve the difficulties, and many times are able to correct the age group listings. Please bear with us while we work the kinks out of the system.

RESULTSWe are instituting a policy regarding the posting of race results and awards which we think will help to speed up the an

nouncement of these prizes. As you know you are responsible for your finish time. The runner completes his finish place sticker and turns it into the results coordinators. We are now allowing the runners ten minutes to do this. In other words turn in your sticker within ten minutes of your finishing the race. If you run a mile in 4:55 then by the time the clock says 14:55 your sticker must be handed in. If you take 14:55 minutes to run that same mile race, you have until 24:55 to turn in your time. We have tried the "ten minute rule" at the last few races and it has worked very well. We are able to get the results posted and announced very quickly. Our racers then know how they did in their age groups very quickly. You may turn in your time later than the ten minute space, however, we do not guarantee that your time will be considered for an award. Your finish time will be included in the results.

. \ PEACHTREE REVISITED:\ ) A FIRST PEACHTREE

By John Johnson

It seems that several weeks or months before the big in or out-of-town races everyone is asking - are you going? Got your number yet? and the fever lasts for several weeks before each of these races. The four of us had run Crescent City and the Fiesta of Five Flags in Pensacola, and now the chance to run Peachtree in Atlanta, Georgia. I got a copy of the race application in early April, made copies and mailed them hoping all four would be accepted.

Each of us received our race packets and numbers with prefixes for estimated times. Mike and Barry had "B" prefixes, I had a "D", and Carolyn an "E". Everyone warned us about the hills, heat, and humidity but since we have two out of the three here we didn't worry (much).

We drove up on Friday and on Saturday we went to the Colony Square Hotel for the Expo. There we spoke to a lot of fellow runners from New Orleans. Several of us drove over the course and found out the hills were for real.

Race day started at 4:00 a.m. for us with a nice drive into town. After parking at the Colony Square Hotel, we caught the second bus leaving for the starting line. There were seven from New Orleans on that bus. We were among the first 1,000 arriving at the shopping center assembly area and watched as the other 25,000 runners arrived. Unfortunately, it was a beautiful morning as we saw the sun and Goodyear Blimp come up at about the same time. The lines at the portalets grew to about 20 deep and the loud-speaker advised all men to use the world's longest latrine (100 ft.).

We wished each other good luck as we left for our respective areas. However, Barry decided to run slow with me. The street was six lanes wide and a slight curve kept the "C" area and back from seeing the starting line banner. We heard the starting gun over the loudspeaker and several minutes later started walking. It took Mike approximately 2 minutes to get to the starting line while it took the other three of us over 4 minutes.

The first mile split was 14 minutes and we were going downhill. In fact, the first 3 miles were mostly downhill. There were people lining both sides of the street the whole way. Also, there were plenty of water sprays and stations. The hills started right before 3 miles and continued past mile five where the course changed to four lanes at Colony Square. Then, downhill and into Piedmont Park we ran where the course changed again to two lanes. We finished at a fast walk or slow jog shoulder to shoulder with thousands of other middle or back of the pack runners. After the race, eveyone was extremely happy to have received a coveted Peachtree t-shirt.

RUNNING IN METAIRIE-LAFRENIERE PARKBy Mike Meehan

Lafreniere Park, located in Metairie on the site of the Old Jefferson Downs Race Track which burned down years ago, has developed into an ever-improving park for numerous outdoor activities, including running. When I moved into the area 2 years ago, I was looking for new places to run, and as the months go by, I find more and more runners are using the developing park for pleasant short and middle-distance running.

The main entrance to the park, at Downs Blvd., has a Vi mile stretch of concrete roadway leading past the 2 main parking areas and the playground. The remaining mile or so of road is crushed shells, and although traffic is allowed on the road, once past the parking lots the cars are few and the running more enjoyable. A typical run includes many sights: Soccer fields filled with novice high school kids and more experienced Latin-American players, Softball Diamonds hosting company ball games and picnics, and large lagoons occasionally buzzing with radio-controlled model speedboats.

The far east and north sides of the park are perhaps the best for runners; there are no other organized sports, and only a small pavillion with a few picnic tables. It provides for quieter and more solitary running. This stretch is good for speed pick-ups that can be timed between the equally-spaced light poles.

The park is not large, and its multi-use design will never make the park a true rival to the absolute beauty of the 1.8 mile and 3.1 mile loops of Audubon Park. A park in the heart of Metairie is most welcome, though, and as the seasons go by the newly-planted trees will surely provide much needed shade and additional beauty to the park. Future plans for the park include a new course for the 1983 Louisiana High School Cross-Country Championship, which should take advantage of several grassy hills and wooden bridges. Post-race activities are planned for the new pavillion, a beautiful open air arena for awards and presentations.

Audubon Park is beautiful, City Park is spacious, and the Mississippi River Levee and Linear park provide long-distance mileage. But Lafreniere Park is coming on strong as a running alternative in Metairie.

KNEE INJURIESBy Alan J. Engle, D.P.M.

Data ragarding runners show that more injuries occur to the knee than to any other part of the body. Approximately 30% of all running injuries involve this joint. A large portion consists of pain around the kneecap, with no loss of stability.

The knee joint is a very complex structure. It has many muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursas, cartilage, and other connective tissue all working together. Most runners with injured knees complain of pain around or under the kneecap. Typically, an aching pain occurs during or after a run and is made worse by hills, especially downhill. The pain may be accentuated by any flexed-knee position, such as driving or climbing up or down stairs. There is no history of knee instability or of the runner feeling as if the knee would collapse. Sometimes there is an initial episode brought on by small injury or extra training, but often no initial history is present. In addition the runner usually will report that the pain goes away if he or she stops running and recurs when training resumes. This diagnosis is usually chondromalacia of the patella. This means a softening of the underside of the patella, the kneecap. This diagnosis actually includes many entities, including tendonitis and bursitis. These various diagnoses do have some technical differences, but the bottom line is pain in an otherwise stable knee.

Precipitating causes of knee pain in runners vary and may include an overstress syndrome due to increase mileage or pace or to a change of running shoes, surface, or wearing worn old shoes. Additionally, a previous injury to the knee, with resultant loss of quadriceps muscle tone, may change knee function. Often runners with knee pain have structural variations from the "ideal" normal. Curving in of the leg bone or the heel bone is common in runners. In either case foot strike is toward the outside of the heel because the bone curves inward. As the weight comes down over the full length of the foot, body weight cannot be maintained on the outside of the heel and the foot sags inward as the weight transfers inward. This causes the arch to come down more than it normally should (excessive pronation). When the foot excessively pro- nates, the entire leg and thigh turn inward as well, and this puts a "torque" on the knee joint. The kneecap rides in a tendon, and as the foot pronates and the leg turns in, the kneecap is not able to turn in quite as much and it may slightly slip out of its bony groove on the leg and thigh bones. With each step it slips slightly, and this may lead to the aching pain around the knee.

Treatment for mild chondromalacia involves: (1) Cut back mileage and hill work until no pain is elicited when running. (2) Ice the thigh and knee pain area 10 to 15 minutes before and after running. (3) When no pain is present on light running, begin quadriceps strengthening exercises. These should be done with the knee completely straight and starting with three to five pounds over the foot. Lift the entire limb and hold for a slow count of 15. Repeat the exercise until the muscle is fatigued. Adding a soft arch support or padding to the inside shoe may give some foot control and relieve mild symptoms. Treatment for more severe cases of chondromalacia includes: rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medicine, orthotics, quadriceps stretching, and if all else fails: surgery.

Prevention of chondromalacia and most other running injuries can be accomplished by using some common sense. Do not increase mileage or pace more than 10% per week. Do not wear worn-out running shoes. If you run on a slanted surface such as the side of a road, alternate sides every mile. Alternate days of hard and easy training. If you hurt, decrease your pace and mileage. If this does not help-rest. You cannot "run through" an injury.

THE WORLD OF HIGH SCHOOL RUNNINGBy Mike Guillot

On November 18, the State AAAA high school Cross Country Championship was held here in New Orleans. It was........149 runners representing 35 schools from all over Louisiana....a three mile race where over one-third of the field finished at better than a 5:40 mile pace.....a banner day for Slidell High School. Their team won the state championship with a record 48 points and their lead runner, Louis Poore, was the individual champion.....a tie for second place between arch-rivals Jesuit and Rummel that had to go to the sixth man tie-breaker before Jesuit could be declared the runner-up for the state title.....Covington High finishing a strong fourth to give the Metro Area a lock on the top four place in the state.....a day when every runner, regardless of place of finish, was a champion because he had qualified for the toughest and most competitive race in the state.....most of all, a day to remember; both for the young men who can forever treasure their performances and for those of us who had the pleasure of watching young people doing something that rewards hard work and personal determination. They gave us all a definitive example of athletic effort.

In MemoriamAL ORY

1939 - 1982

The New Orleans Track Club and its membership would like to say thanks and farewell to a dear friend and member of the New Orleans running community for many years, Al Ory. Al died on Sunday, November 21st, 1982, the day he was to hold his annual Basin Run. He was born in New Orleans on July 15,1939, and was well known to many runners for his service and contributions to races for years. The NOTC extends its sympathy to Al's wife, Carol and his daughters Cindy and Amy.

By Wade M. Sickinger

I have the highest respect for those runners who compete in races. But, I also believe that many of the novice runners start off obsessed with serious competition in races when they should be satisfied with just safely completing races.

When I started running I had a fear of failure because I could only run a 10-11 minute per mile pace. So I pushed and pushed and put so much emphasis on my pace in training runs and races that I caused several injuries to myself. I now know those injuries could have been avoided if I had only realized that there was no shame in running a race instead of racing a race.

After I recovered I started training regularly again but at my slow pace. I entered races with an attitude to have fun and complete them instead of worrying about my pace and seriously competing in them. I found that I got much more enjoyment from running, and in time my pace automatically increased.

Also I found that the serious competitors never look down on the slower runners. Actually the opposite is true in that they are anxious to discuss running and answer questions. Just remember that no question is a stupid question if you don't know the answer.

COMPLETING VS. COMPETING

THE POWER OF TOTAL LIVINGBy Marcus Bach

Thanks to Diane Black for sharing these words with us.

I run with life, life runs with me,My body's light, my feet are free; And little angels beat their drums,They beat their drums with their silver wings, Till all of heaven laughs and sings.

Soon the sound is left behind As it falls in joy on all mankind.

Now Gabriel sounds a mighty tone And wakes God up on His great white throne; And God shakes off His sleepy grog And grabs His shoes and begins to jog!

Little angels, light and nimble,Bang away on a big brass cymbal,

They bang away with their silver wings,Till all of heaven laughs and sings.

Saint Peter gets in such a state He leaves his keys in the pearly gate; Then he shouts to his security men,"My golden slippers are gone again!"

He calls to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, "Fellows, get your jog shoes on!"As for me," says Peter, "I find it neat To run around in my bare feet.It takes me back to the silver strand,The fisherman's wharf and the golden sand; That's where I'd still love to be,Jogging along in Galilee!"

TRACKSIDEROUND THE LAKE-141 MILES

By Chuck George

Saturday, November 13, 1982, 5:00 a m., Shelter #1, Lakeshore Drive. N.O.T.C. runners Leon Pisciotta, Al Dehon, Dave Sears set the pace westward for a planned attempt to circle Lake Pontchartrain - on foot. Leon's original idea from several years ago was now a reality with each step. The planning called for two 30 minute periods of running back to back, then walking for 15 minutes. With a contingent of friends along for several miles consisting of John Mire, Mike Meehan, Butch Buhler, Janice Buhler, Boatner Reily, Jeannie Blair, Amy Trosclair, Madelyn Bush and several others they proceeded down the windy lake bike path past west end, buck town; towards Metairie and Kenner. Pat Sears and I drove ahead and setup aid stations at Bonnabel Blvd., Suburban Canal, Duncan Canal, and the railroad track crossing the Bonne-Carre Spillway. Near the Parish line (2'A miles past Duncan Canal) the last of the send off crew waved for luck and turned back.

At the railroad tracks crossing the spillway the aid station would be the last for over 12 miles, as they would have to transverse the tracks for V« mile then proceed down an old roadbed through the picturesque swampland.

Pat Sears would be setting up the next aid station on Hwy. 51 outside LaPlace north of 1-10. She would continue from this point as the escort-aid vehicle with Mary Ann Pisciotta arriving in Pontchatoula. I would drop off at the spillway and return later in the day outside of Pontchatoula.

Afternoon 3:00 p.m., Martha George, Martha Menairi and myself catch the group outside Pontchatoula some 60 miles into the run. The trio at this point was assisted with the addition of Lucy Corbett and Janice Buhler running along. Throughout the journey Martha George and Martha Menari would also run with the trio several times.

The longest stretch of the run seemed to be between Pontchatoula and Madisonville. Madisonville grew more distant as darkness approached. During this stretch all three had periods of slight dizziness and irritability, quickly attributed to food and fluid loss, as each began to consume larger quantities than previously. Leon had made some banana-honey bread (not for dieters) and some honey-lemonade homebrew. All three made haste with the bread and also indulged in bananas, oranges, apples, dates, raisins, chocolate bars, erg. The dizzy spells were quickly controlled by this method and never returned.

At about 8:00 p.m. most of the support crew had broken off for some well deserved rest, I had planned to run 20 miles with the runners and bike the remainder. It was important during the entire journey to have someone leading them for safety assurances. The tire on the bike went flat and this caused me to run with the group much longer than expected.

Passing through the Covington-Mandeville area Mary and Kirk Dehon caught us with Kirk adding in several miles himself to the efforts. Onwards through Lacombe and Slidell we approached the 1-10 overpass as the route continued down Hwy. 433 to Hwy. 90. At this point we were met by Ed Corbett who would relieve me and put in some 25 miles himself. He couldn't have arrived at a better time. We approached the Rigolets Bridge at daylight as the 14th broke. Just past the bridge Jeannie Blair, John Mire, Boatner Reily fell in with the runners. These welcomed people would continue for the rest of the run, some 25 miles still left. Ever increasing as the finish approached, the contingent proceeded along Chef Hwy. to Read Blvd. up Read to Haynes Blvd. At Haynes we switched to the lake levee due to traffic congestion. Along the levee, one of Dave's sons would yell out encouragement from an escort vehicle passing on the road below. Dave would acknowledge with a slight wave as he and the others now relied on reserve energy brought on by mental strength.

Near the Lakefront airport the group made use of our aid station set up there, as a levee officer came by to ask if we were having a party or planned on camping out.

Across the median of Seabrook Bridge past UNO on Leon C. Simon Dr. then Robt. E. Lee Blvd. to Canal Street the pace was picking up as each could sense the finish line. Down Canal St., we were led by a van with a queen on top (such as in a Mardi Gras Float) down to Lakeshore Drive. Dave, Al and Leon ran stride for stride through the last several hundred yards amidst the cheers of family, hundreds of friends and spectators and the spray of champagne, to finish this first ever suc- cesful attempt. Afterwards I overhead Leon mention Natchez Trace.....

P.S. The writer conveys the deep appreciation from Dave, Al and Leon for the gracious help of all the volunteers. Also that no other such attempt be made without serious training and proper safety precautions.

of the club for over a year, I felt it was time to join this fine organization once again. I've helped out and run in several of your fine races, and have come to know some of the enthusiastic, sincere people (and fast runners!) associated with this organization - I want to be an active part.

Since my brother-in-law Mike Guillot was preparing to submit additional articles to "Footprints" I thought I could add a little something also to the December issue. Please feel free to edit if my grammar and/or spelling is unacceptable.

With about a half-mile left, some of the top runners start to make their moves. John Condy of Jesuit has a slight edge over Paul Martinez of Rummel and Clark Bristol of Broadmoor (Baton Rouge). Eventually, John finished tenth, Paul finished eleventh, and Clark finished thirteenth.

Coach Bill Brousse stands with members of his state championship team. His runners lost only one of the nine meets they entered this year. Coach Brousse, citing increasing administrative duties at Slidell High, Is retiring as a state champion. Congratulations, Coach!

The Intensity Is evident as the pack approaches the last levee climb. Nearly all of the runners in this picture ran faster than a 6:00 mile pace.

"ALOHA"Fabulous Honolulu Marathon —1982

By Lloyd Held

Long before our NOTC running contingent departed for Honolulu, Oahu U.S.A. the adrenalin was beginning to rise. The excitement of the trip, the preparations, the training all began to fit into place. Can you imagine going to such a great vacation spot to run a marathon. We learned a lot about the Honolulu Marathon before we departed. Normal runners curiosity, I suppose. It is said the Honolulu Marathon is noted for being one of the most respected and organized races in the world. It also confesses to have the reputation of being one of the most challenging courses with a very high percentage of finishers in spite of the warm, humid weather conditions.

On December 7th (Pearl Harbor Day) one of the most infamous days in our history, we departed for dreamland via Dallas. At Dallas we boarded a DC 10 which was somewhat puzzling at the time as we had invisioned the trip aboard a 747. Much to our surprise, we learned we were the overflow from the overbooked original flight. Would you believe we had a total of 35 to 40 passengers aboard this DC 10 for the flight to Honolulu. VIP treatment for the Economy class was never heard of. We had it and we loved it. What a way to start a vacation/marathon.

Arriving in Honolulu we immediately proceeded to acquaint ourselves with the running areas. We learned these areas quickly and began doing our short maintenance miles each day. It was obvious to us that the City of Honolulu is 100% behind its running community. The jogging areas were numerous, the drivers were courteous, water fountains were everywhere. The courses were easy or challenging depending on what you were inclined to do. The scenery was fantastic, and we took full advantage of the running areas. With the assistance of the finest Master Marathoner and runner we know Larry Fuselier we went through our runs guided by his words of wisdom. Each of us had prior marathon experience but learned a few new tactics from our coach. Hats off to this guy, he's good.

The race tempo was beginning to pick up. Everywhere we went there were runners, joggers, walkers and the like. All six of us were about as ready as we would ever be. Lyle (Sushi) Morehouse, Larry Fuselier, John Fuselier, Joe Dembrun, Lloyd Robichaux and yours truly Lloyd Held.

The ladies accompanying their men were marathoning also...they were marathon shopping and believe me, they had one whale of a time, in a whale of a place; probably one of the most phenominal shopping areas anywhere. We should mention these champions here, Fran Gray (Larry's fiancee), Leora Fuselier, Jane Dembrun, Mary Robichaux, Juliette Held and of course, Lyle Morehouse when she was not running or eating Hagen Daz, a super group of ladies.

6:00 a m., Sunday December 12th, 62°F, rain and humid "Bang" - amid a fireworks display and a cannon send off the 10,229 runners shuffled off into the darkness of the Honolulu streets in a drizzling rain that developed into a torrential rain later on into the run. We attacked Diamondhead at about the 5Vi mile mark. The rain was with us as was the darkness. At some point in time daylight began to peek through. After an hour and a half or so the sun came out. This is when the temperature began to build up. Unofficially, I heard the temp, rose to 78°F. Another hot marathon on a fantastic course.

Somewhere in the darkness we all became separated. Until the finish neither of us knew where the members of our group were. From the field of runners it was obvious this race had an international exposure. Needless to say the heat took its toll in spite of the Hawaiians know how. We ran past droves of spectators, well wishers, Hula Dancers, and musical encouragement. Still the rising temperature continued to methodically sap our energy. Water stops became more frequent, sponges became essential. The Honolulu Marathon Committee had all the expected conditions worked out.

At last the final climb up Diamondhead began to loom ahead. At about the 22 mile mark we began our climb. Somewhere around 23V* miles we began our downhill run for approximately 1 Vi or 2 miles. After that it was a slight downgrade to a flat surface for a little more than the Vi mile sprint to the finish line.

We all finished despite the obstacles, which was a testimonial to our level of training. It was truly a fabulous marathon. Our hats off to the Honolulu Marathon Committee and 3 cheers to those super, super people "the Volunteers."

To those of you that missed it this year. Try it in 1983, but don't forget to go with your friends as we did. They added to the pleasure — "Aloha".
