A NUESTROS LECTORES

El sitio web proyecto-orunmila.org se concibi con el objetivo de satisfacer lasnecesidades crecientes de informacin que existen sobre la cultura "Lucum" enCuba y que es originaria del frica sub-sahariana. De esta cultura tambinexisten evidencias que se reflejan en los documentos escritos que presentamosa modo de fuentes.

Estas fuentes fueron escritas por descendientes de africanos y creyentes de sureligin en Cuba. Las mismas han sido colectadas durante ms de 30 aos, enRegla y Guanabacoa, Ciudad de La Habana, por miembros del equipo deinvestigaciones histrico-antropolgicas "Proyecto Orunmila", que est integradopor personal religioso con alta preparacin en las especialidades cientficas afinesal tema religioso y muy en particular al estudio del aporte africano -Lucum- ala cultura cubana. El Proyecto Orunmila es parte integrante del Il Osha AdYer, que es una casa templo de la religin de Osha-If.

En otros contextos esta religin cubana de origen africano y que hemosdocumentado a lo largo de ms de 30 aos, es denominada Religin Lucum,Regla de Osha, Regla de If, Religin de los Orishas o Santera.Nosotros nos referimos a ella como La Religin Osha-If.

Los Il Osha y los Il If son las clulas fundamentales de la religin Osha-If,y constituyen una institucin religiosa tradicional en el contexto de la culturacubana. Estos forman sus propias descendencias conocidas por ramasreligiosas.

Osha-If es un sistema religioso de complejsima y variada expresin. Sabemosque falta mucho y que pueden existir otros documentos sobre el mismo tema yconocemos que toda la valiosa variedad de asuntos que se abordan yprocedimientos de cada rama seguidos en una ceremonia concreta son de talespecificidad que resulta imposible colectarlo todo. En esto se basa el dinamismointerno de Osha-If.

El Proyecto Orunmila ha venido colectando de forma estable y sistemticadocumentos que reflejan la tradicin escrita de la herencia cultural de losafricanos trados a Cuba forzosamente durante la oprobiosa trata esclava. Estasinvestigaciones se han venido realizando desde 1972 hasta la actualidad en lostrminos municipales de Regla y Guanabacoa, territorios que fueron puntos dedesembarque y mercado de esclavos respectivamente. Regla y Guanabacoa sonun espacio relativamente homogneo desde el punto de vista socio-econmico,cultural y religioso.

Recordemos que la existencia natural de Osha-If son las casas-templos y lasramas religiosas que son los que preservan toda la riqueza y sabidura ancestraly tanto las casas templos como las ramas religiosas son las estructuraselementales de esta religin cubana.









El Proyecto Orunmila persigue con sus estudios los siguientes objetivos:

1- Rescatar y conservar documentos relativos al sistema oracular -If,Dilogn y Biange y Aditoto-, al panten de sus Orishas, a lasceremonias, ritos y poderes de Osha-If y a su religin en general. Estosdocumentos fueron escritos y redactados por los descendientes de losafricanos principalmente de cultura yoruba provenientes de la regin delsur occidental del Sahara.

2- Procesar dichos documentos de modo tal que pudieran ser usadospor los creyentes de Osha-If como pauta religiosa y que al mismotiempo puedan servir como fuentes para la investigacin cientfica paraespecialistas en religin, historiadores, etnlogos, antroplogos,socilogos, etnolingistas, etnobotnicos e interesados en elconocimiento y la sabidura que legaron los africanos y susdescendientes al Nuevo Mundo.

3- Dar a conocer y divulgar estas fuentes de incalculable valor para elconocimiento de la herencia cultural africana en Cuba y que en laactualidad se expande a otras latitudes en forma dinmica.

Como sabemos, Osha-If es un sistema religioso muy activo que no tienefronteras administrativas ni lmites culturales, por eso el indicador tiempofuncion perfectamente para compilar los textos. Sin embargo, el indicadorespacio se hizo ms complejo porque existen documentos que fueron recogidosen Regla y Guanabacoa pero, por el mismo movimiento de las familias deOsha-If, esos materiales estaban vinculados a otros existentes fuera delterritorio. Esto es necesario tener en cuenta para comprender algn proceso quepueda ocurrir entre lo hallado en el territorio objeto de estudio y lo que estfuncionando en otras zonas como Habana Vieja, Centro Habana, Marianao yotros.

Osha-If es un organismo religioso vivo y fecundo. Existen variantes y hastaconcepciones diferentes sobre un mismo asunto. Esto puede ser debido a losdistintos factores socio-culturales que se encontraron en la Isla y a la ampliavariedad de componentes tnicos de la cultura Yoruba llegada a Cuba queintervinieron en los procesos histricos y culturales relacionados a Osha-If.Sabido es que en Cuba confluyeron elementos de otras culturas, etnias ycosmovisiones religiosas. Cada uno de ellos aport su cultura y religiosidad y, asu vez, se influyeron mutuamente de manera que ha quedado lo tendencialaceptado por muchos y reas donde an existen especificidades y variantesutilizadas por otros.

En la etnognesis de la formacin de la nacin cubana ocurrieron y an ocurrentales fusiones, de elementos culturales que tienen sus propias caractersticas.Nosotros aseguramos que Osha-If, como se manifiesta en Cuba es, adems, unareligin cubana derivada de elementos fundamentalmente africanos.











Todos los documentos que posee el Proyecto Orunmila procedentes delcontexto religioso estn rigurosamente ubicados en tiempo, espacio y al sujetoque los aport. En todos los casos se ha hecho un esfuerzo por historiar lacirculacin de los mismos en las familias de Osha-If.

Para autentificar cada documento se han utilizado varias copias del mismo temarecogidas en diferentes casas-templos procedentes de diferentes sacerdotes. Almismo tiempo cada uno de los documentos ha sido cuidadosamente analizadocon sacerdotes expertos. Luego, del grupo de documentos comparados seseleccion el que funciona con la mayor precisin posible para la mayora. Deestas selecciones de documentos surgi la coleccin de las fuenteshistrico-antropolgicas denominada "Documentos para la Historia y la Culturade Osha-If en Cuba.

TO OUR READERS

This web proyecto-orunmila.org has been conceived to satisfy the growingnecessity for information on the Lucum culture in Cuba which is, at the sametime, originally from the Sud-Saharian area in Africa. Much evidence of thisculture is also reflected in the written documents which we introduce as primarysources.

These sources have been written by African descendants and believers of theirreligion in Cuba and collected for over thirty years in Regla and Guanabacoa,(two towns located in the eastern coast of the Bay of Havana in the capital ofCuba) by members of Proyecto Orunmila Historical-Anthropological ResearchTeam. This research team is made up by religious personnel with high expertisein those scientific specialties related to the religious profile and particularly, tothe study of the African -Lucum contribution to the Cuban Culture. ProyectoOrunmila Historical-Anthropological Research Team is a part of the Il OshaAd Yer which is a temple-house in the Osha-If religion.

In other contexts this African derived Cuban religion that we have documentedfor over 30 years is also known as Religin Lucum; Regla de Osha, Reglade If; Religin de los Orishas or Santera. We refer to it as La religin deOsha-If (Osha-If Religion or simply Osha-If).

Both Il Osha and Il If are essential cells in Osha-If and constitute atraditional religious institution within Cuban culture. These religious cells havetheir own descendants or families which we know and recognize as religiousbranches (ramas religosas or just ramas).

Osha-If is highly complex and manifold in its own expression. We know thereis still a lot to be collected, and we also know that there can be other documentson the same matter. It is very clear to us that all the valuable varieties of topicswithin this religion, and the procedures followed by each branch at a givenceremony, is of such a particular profile that it becomes almost impossible tocollect them all. This is the internal dynamics of Osha-If.

Proyecto Orunmila Historical-Anthropological Research Team hassystematically been collecting documents which reflect the written tradition ofthe cultural inheritance of those African men and women brought forcibly toCuba during the shameful slave trade. This research started back in 1972 andhas endured all these years up to now in Regla and Guanabacoa townships,points of slave disembarkment and trade in such period of our history. Reglaand Guanabacoa townships, from a cultural, religious and socio-economic pointof view, comprise a relatively homogeneous area in Cuba.

Let us recall that the natural existence of Osha-If is based on the templehouses(Il Osha-Il If) and their descendant religious branches which preserve theancient wisdom and richness of Osha-If. Both the templehouses and thereligious branches are the natural basic social frames of this Cuban religion.









Proyecto Orunmila Historical-Anthropological Research Team seeks forthese objectives in their research:

1- To rescue and to preserve documents related to the oracle system(If, Dilogn, Biange y Aditoto); to the pantheon of their Orishas(deities); to the ceremonies, rites and powers of Osha-If, and to theirreligion in general. These documents were written and worded byAfrican descendants of Yoruba culture stemed from the westSud-saharian region.

2- To process those documents to make them readable and usable byOsha-If believers as religious reference and also to facilitate the workof scientific researchers such as specialists in religion, historians,ethnologists, anthropologists, sociologists, ethnolinguists, ethno-biologists and people interested in the knowledge and wisdom of theAfrican legacy and their descendants in the New World.

3- To make public and spread these unvaluable primary sources toknow the African cultural inheritance in Cuba which, at present, isexpanding dynamically to other regions of the world.

As we all know, Osha-If is a very active religious system with no administrativebounderies nor cultural limits. Consequently, analyzing the texts based upon thetime they were written was no problem. However, determining where suchdocuments were written became much more complex since we found andcollected documents in Regla and Guanabacoa townships which were linked toothers existing in territories different from Regla and Guanabacoa. This is dueto the fact that Osha-If families move in and out of places just like any otherfamilies in Cuba. This event is to be taken into consideration to understand anyprocess which may happen between what was collected in the territories studiedand what is working in regions like Habana Vieja, Centro Habana, Marianaoand others.

Osha-If is a prolific and alive religious organism. There are variants and evendifferent understandings of the various aspects of the religion. This fact can bedue to the various social and cultural factors present on our island. And also dueto a wide variety of ethnic components of the Yoruba culture present in Cubawhich contributed to the historical and cultural processes bound up to Osha-If.It is well known that elements of other cultures, ethnic groups and assortedreligious visions gathered in Cuba. Each of them contributed with their cultureand religiosity to build up our Nation. At the same time, they influenced eachother in such way that we can easily find the mingled tendencies accepted bymost of them along with areas where there are particular variants used by others.











In the ethnogenesis of the formation of the Cuban Nation there have been andstill there are these fusions of cultural elements that have their owncharacteristics. For all that has been said before, we are certain that Osha-If,as it is in Cuba, is also a Cuban religion with evident African derived elements.

Each and every document Proyecto Orunmila Historical-AnthropologicalResearch Team has collected during all these years and that come from areligious field, have been fully placed in time, space and subjects that providedthem. Proyecto Orunmila Historical-Anthropological Research Team has madegreat efforts to historically trace the circulation of such documents amongOsha-If families.

The process of authenticating each collected document has forced us to usevarious copies of the same topic gathered at different temple-house fromdifferent priests. At the same time, each piece of paper with valuableinformation has been carefully analyzed and discussed with priests with greatexpertise in Osha-If. Then, from the compared documents, we selected thosethat work the best way possible for the majority of believers. The greatcollection of primary historical-anthropological sources known as Documentospara la Historia y la Cultura de Osh-If en Cuba (Documents for the Historyand Culture of Osha-If in Cuba) is the scientific and religious result of thisselective process mentioned above.

Ceremonias y Caminos de Egun

Ceremonias y Caminos de EgunA los muertos hay que tenerlos bien dispuestos y contentos y hay que respetarlostanto como a lo Oshas. Las reverencias a los antepasados es una de las bases msfirmes de las religiones de origen africano.

Las almas de los muertos no deben comer en el interior de la casa, sus ofrendasse le sirven en el patio, mientras ms lejos de la casa mejor y el sitio msindicado para eso es el hueco que se forma entre las races de un rbol.

Se le ofrenda agua fresca (om tuto), pan (okar), bebidas (ot), tabaco (ash) yalimentos cocinados sin sal, tambin ek, ek, ey y olel.

Los muertos comen con Elegu separado de los orisha y en todas las ceremoniasy fiestas de Osha primero tenemos que cumplir con ellos y pedirle permiso paratodo lo que se va a hacer.

Comida al Muerto

Para darle eyegbale (sangre) se cuenta con diferentes medios para ello. Hay quienlo hace en platos o dentro de una jcara; en otras ocasiones directamente alescusado pero la forma correcta es sobre una teja. Dicha ceremonia esta reflejadaen Oyekun Meyi y Ogbe Sa.

La eyegbale para la teja, cogemos una teja de barro sobre la cual pintamos la atena,si el Egun es obin la teja es por la canal.

Nota: La atena se traza con cascarilla y carbn, se preparan nueve pedazos decoco de dos centmetros aproximadamente. Por la parte blanca se unta ep y acada uno de stos se le echa ek, ey, aguad y atar mesan por la parte blanca,cada uno de stos se le coloca encima de cada odun la atena en forma deherradura. Pasando por detrs de la teja, se colocan en el suelo nueve itan y deizquierda a derecha se comienzan a encender con el siguiente syere:

Nota: En este mismo syere incluiremos el nombre del difunto al cual se le hacela ofrenda. Terminada esta ceremonia se le da coco a Egun de la siguiente forma:Se colocan los ob en el suelo frente a la atena, en lnea recta y boca abajo y secomienza a moyugbar rezando Oshebile de Egun:

Despus de dar ob el siguiente paso es dar eyegbale de los animales destinados aEgun, en el caso de las aves no se le lavan las patas y ni el pico, slo se les rocaot en la boca. En algunos casos lo tomamos por las patas introduciendo las alasen un recipiente. En otro caso en dependencia de la gravedad de la situacinlimpiamos a las personas con el siguiente syere:

Despus de limpiar a las personas empezamos a matar.

Cuando se termina de desangrar el animal no se le corta la cabeza arriba de lahierba, se le deja caer ot, om y o de forma tal que el residuo caiga arriba de lateja.

Se le coloca al animal boca abajo frente a la teja de forma tal que la cabezaquede encima de ella. Acto seguido se toma el bastn de Egun y golpeando conl en el suelo se comienza a cantar un syere a Egun. Segn las reglastradicionales, como mnimo son nueve syere y como mximo de diecisis atreinta y dos syere. Despus de terminado los syere tomamos los cocos y sepregunta si Egun umboloro. Si el Egun cierra satisfactoriamente ponemos los cocosboca arriba y le echamos om tuto con el siguiente syere:

Amara Wara Ob Mi Tegun Ama.

Viramos el coco boca abajo y haciendo la misma operacin cantamos el siguientesyere:

Ob Ik, Ob Ik, Lele Ob Ama Lorun.

En esta misma forma lo dejamos colocados frente a la teja y todos los presentesvan echando efn sobre la teja con el siguiente syere:

Los animales de Egun van enterrados en un hueco fundamentalmente en elcementerio. En otras ocasiones al pie de un rbol como la ceiba, el jobo o elalgarrobo.

Ceremonia de enterramiento

Se traza un crculo de efn en la tierra y se pinta en el centro Ogbe Roso, se le rezaeste signo y se comienza a abrir el hueco, se colocan a los animales dentro del y encima de ello se le roca efn con sus syere y comenzamos a tapar el huecode la siguiente forma: El primer puado de tierra que se toma es con la manoderecha, la persona a la que se le hace la ceremonia debe persignarse con ella, labesar y la dejar caer con el siguiente syere:
