THE CHURCH OF SAINT AGNES, NYC JANUARY 27, 2019

The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Processional hymn: #91, Offertory hymn: #96

Recessional hymn: #120

*** External Solemnity of St. Agnes

(Traditional Latin Mass)

Let’s meet for coffee—TODAY!

St. Agnes welcomes everyone to cof-

fee hour after the 9am Mass today,

Sunday, January 27th. Coffee and

light treats will be served in the lower

church hall. Join us!

Why do some bow their heads

at the name of Jesus? The tradition of reverencing the name of Jesus takes

its origin from St. Paul, who wrote in his Letter to the Phi-

lippians 2:9-10: “God greatly exalted Him and bestowed

on Him the name that is above every other name, that at

the name of Jesus every knee should bend … and every

tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. …” The custom was formalized at the Second Council of

Lyons in the 13th century, which decreed the special honor

due, “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow;

whenever that glorious name is recalled, especially during

the sacred mysteries of the Mass, everyone should bow the

knees of his heart, which he can do even by a bow of his

head.” Source: Fr. Kenneth Doyle, CNS, May 31, 2013

St. Blaise Feast Day This year, St. Blaise’s Feast Day,

February 3rd, falls on a Sunday.

of throats at the 8AM, 9AM, 11AM,

5:15PM, and 7PM Masses that day.

Following the 12:30PM Mass, we will

offer individual blessings of throats.

Please understand that the general blessing is due to

time constrains with our Sunday Mass schedule.

Thank you!

CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

OFFER

"TOURING TUESDAY" The Archdiocese of New York is happy to offer a

first-hand opportunity to see Catholic schools in action.

Known as “Touring Tuesdays,” 130 elementary schools

throughout the Archdiocese are participating in these

events, which will take place on select Tuesdays

throughout the school year from 9:00am to 11:00am,

or by appointment. Touring Tuesdays are designed

to introduce prospective families to the life-long bene-

fits and value of a Catholic education, starting with

Pre-K/UPK and extending through 8th Grade. The 2019 dates are January 29, February 12,

March 5, March 19, and April 9, or by appointment.

Touring Tuesday reservations are required

and can be made online at

www.catholicschoolsny.org/touring-tuesdays,

or by calling our bilingual Parent Helpline,

(646) 794-2885.

School tours can also be arranged

at other times to accommodate parents’ schedules.

“In 2017-18, Catholic elementary schools registered

the fourth consecutive year of improved Math and English

Language Arts (ELA) test scores, surpassing the gains in

proficiency achievement of both New York State and City

schools.” - Dr. Timothy J. McNiff,

Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of New York

Jim Marcinkiewicz from Liturgical Publications vis-

ited St. Agnes last week, working on securing new ads for

the advertisement section of our bulletin. We need your

help! Please consider purchasing an ad. Your ad and

participation makes our bulletin successful, and you attract

customers. Our parish bulletin is one of our main communica-

tion tools to our parish members. It provides inspirational

words from Father, Mass intentions, news, and events for

the week ahead. We are thankful that this crucial communi-

cation piece is provided to our parish at no cost, thanks to

the generous advertising support of our parishioners and

community-minded businesses. Please let us know if you

can help. Sponsors of our bulletin recognize the tremen-

dous value of connecting with our Church family, who in

turn respond by supporting our sponsors! Advertisements can be purchased for a business, a

family, a charity, in memory of a Love One, or to support

the Church or a community service organization (such as

emergency pregnancy counseling, etc). If you would like to run an ad or would like

more information, please call Jim before his visit. He

can be reached directly at 973-525-7674 or
