St. Joseph Community News A DOSE OF PERSPECTIVE
It’s vacation time. Many families in the parish have told me about their vacation plans and their opportunities to grab some well-deserved rest over the past few weeks. I’m glad that so many are taking advantage of that opportunity.
Vacation always provides some much-needed perspective. When you return to work or school after getting away for a while, things look differently: those problems don’t seem so big anymore, that person who rubs you the wrong way seems less irritating, the work that once seemed tedious is more bearable, and all of the stress that accompanied everything before your time away is now replaced by a new sense of balance. Vacations are important––to put it in a word, they offer much perspective.
I have a favorite aunt who is a voracious reader of fiction. She says that she loves to read because it’s her “escape.” Be-fore going to bed, she picks up a book and, for a while, feels free from all of the troubles that plagued her during the day. It’s an opportunity for her to get away and get into a story, making her own story look different. Again, a wonderful dose of perspective.
The past year has been a whirlwind for me as a priest; learning two new jobs at once has left me feeling many days like I’m standing with my hands on my knees panting, having just finished a marathon. I don’t share that as a plea for pity, but rather to highlight something wonderful that I’ve relearned (or learned more profoundly).
I have learned once more that God gives that same perspective in prayer. It’s quite a change of perspective, indeed. When we come to relate to God as a Person and learn to interact with him in the depths of our minds and hearts––knowing him and loving him and being known and loved by him––he shares with us his own view of life (and his view of our particular lives). What a joy there is in hearing the voice of Christ in the silence of the heart in prayer as he sheds light on a problem, or frustration, or anxiety, or failure! God is the ultimate perspective-giver.
Over the past year, I have been particularly able to tell the difference when I haven’t prayed during a certain day: my perspective is all off. I am far too concerned about myself and focused on my own needs, rather than on God and the needs of others. Problems get blown out of proportion; stressors seem insurmountable; frustrations seem like weapons of mass destruction; and individual failures seem like life-ending defeats. I thank God for that realization. And I invite you to discover how much prayer can be like a daily vacation in your own life––it’s a lesson worth learning and worth trying.
All of this goes by way of introduction to saying, “I’m getting out of here!” I’ll be away for the next couple of weeks. Some of it will be work, as I attend two youth events that the vocations office sponsors, and some of it will be personal time to vacation a little with my family and recover some of the perspective that I seem to have misplaced here and there. While I’m away, be sure nothing burns down!
