Presented by the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD) in collaboration with the Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH)This program is specifically designed to provide the necessary education to meet the requirement for a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) and to enable the attendees to develop an appropriate laser safety program (that is increasingly being required by state regulatory agencies) for their dental facilities. The science of lasers, their classifications and terminology, and the components of a healthcare laser system (HCLS) will be included in this presentation. Safety concerns and considerations will focus on potential issues for both laser beam dangers and nonbeam hazards, including electri-cal, respiratory, and fire hazards, as well as human factors, engineering controls, and safety mechanisms. The LSO’s role and responsi-bilities will be discussed as well as the procedural and administrative controls that need to be in place at every healthcare faculty where lasers are being utilized.Learning Objectives:• thephysicsoflasers• thecomponentsofthelasersystem, deliverysystem, andintrumentationUpon completion of this course, the participants will be able to:• anunderstandingoflaserscienceandterminology• anunderstandingoflaserclassifications• knowledgeofthepotentialbeamandnon-beamhazardsofalaser• anunderstandingoftheroleandresponsibilitiesofaLaserSaftyOfficer(LSO)• theaabilitytodevelopalasersafetyprogramfortheirfacility• laserindicationsandcontraindicationsforgeneraldentistsandspecialistsRecommended audience:Dentists – Dental Hygienists – Clinical auxiliaries – Anyone desiring to become a LSOSpeakers:Raminta Mastis, DDS, (Co-Chair Education Committee ALD) Scott D.
