CHALLENGE NURTURE INSPIRE

The Pre-Prep and Prep Courier

by Andrew Edwards

I find it hard to believe that it has been nearly six weeks since we came back for the start of the Spring term and it is amazing how much the staff and pupils have packed into that short time. Academically, it has been another very hard-working and inspiring couple of

weeks since the last Prep Courier, and I cannot remember seeing so many pupils at break-time for Rolls of Honour as I have done over the past fortnight.

The 11+ scholarships process has now come to an end and we had a good number of very strong applications in all areas. The number of scholarship awards were very evenly spread across all areas (Academic, Sports, Music, Dance, Drama, Design Technology, and Art), and both external and internal applications were treated exactly the same in all respects. We are certainly on track to have some highflying classes for the start of Year 7.

Thank you to all parents for their support during the inspection this week. As well as the heart-warming words of encouragement from parents, for which we were very grateful, the inspectors reported that a very good proportion of parents took the time and trouble to fill out the confidential questionnaire. The inspectors left yesterday afternoon and it will be around 7 working weeks until the publication of the report. From a school’s point of view, the inspection was a very positive experience and it was terrific to be able to pass on to our pupils in assembly yesterday the lovely words of praise which the inspectors used to describe our boys and girls. The inspection has been an excellent opportunity for staff, pupils and parents to pull together as a team, and for us all to feel proud to be part of such a super school.

Talking of pride, I congratulated our two choirs

yesterday who sang at the Taunton Festival of the Arts Choir competition. Very well done to Mrs Hornsby and her staff, and to the pupils for practising and performing so well. I know what a lot of concentration and hard work goes into preparing for performances such as yesterday’s and it was wonderful to see our pupils enjoying the thrill of a competition in their performing arts endeavours, as well as on the sports field. We didn’t quite manage to retain the titles which we won last year, but I emphasised to the pupils that if they aim high, and try their best, then we are always very proud of them. In sport, an amazing total of 38 pupils from Senior and Prep swam in the County Swimming Championships (having met the high standard required to qualify), and our Year 8 boys won their regional IAPS hockey tournament, thereby reaching the National Finals. Very well done to all of these hard-working and talented pupils. To be regional winners in hockey at both U11 and U13 level is very rarely achieved by any school. Finally, with so much good news, it is not surprising that we had another very successful Open Morning on 1st February. In the Prep School, day pupils wanting to join the school before September are having to go onto a waiting list in all year groups except our current Year 6. Additional places will be available in September due to the extra classes which we will be creating for the current Years 4, 5 and 6. It is a great privilege to be Head of such a sought after school.

I wish all of you a restful and very enjoyable half term holiday. Mr Andrew Edwards, Headmaster

As we end our final week of this half-term we have loved all the hearts and flowers that have appeared around the Nursery and the Pre-Prep today.

We also enjoyed our inspection scrutiny. Thank you to all our parents who shared their feedback or took time out of busy schedules to meet with one

of the Inspection team. Along with our inspections, Year two had a visit from one of our Governors; Ian Moncrieff at the start of the week. Ian joined Mrs Brodie’s class to see the children’s learning in the last year of the Pre-Prep. Ian spent the afternoon observing lessons in the Prep school as well as observing the younger children. Taunton school is supported

by a very committed Governing body, working incredibly hard to support the outcomes for all our children here. Thank you to the sports staff for the afternoon of multi sports on Thursday. I was incredibly excited to see the mixed teams, along with the skills the children are developing in their PE lessons. Thank you so much to all the parents for providing the tracksuits. The children now look well prepared for their next away festival.

For those of you heading off for a quick break, whether it be hot, cold or just recharging the batteries, I hope that your week is enjoyable and that Storm Dennis is not too much of a menace!

CHANGES TO PARKING AND DROP-OFF IN THE SENIOR SCHOOLMORNING DROP-OFFIn order to improve the flow of traffic during early morning drop off in the Senior School, we are creating a new drop off routine for parents in the morning as follows:

• Morning drop off for senior school parents will move to the other side of the road i.e. adjacent to the pitches

• Pupils will need to cross at the designated crossing point

• We will have marshals out to signpost people for the first week

• The parking spaces in front of the parade square will be reserved for Headmaster’s visitors and disabled parking only.

DURRANT CAR PARK

We have managed to improve visibility for drivers exiting the Durrant car park by taking the fence back slightly. This means that we no longer need to route traffic through the car park and the one way system is no longer required.

Signage will be installed over February half term.

'HARRY THE PIANO' IN CONCERT AT TAUNTON SCHOOL

THE BEST DARN PIANIST IN THE CIVILISED WORLD.’ - JONATHAN ROSS

We are delighted to welcome a world renowned Pianist to Taunton School this term. During the afternoon of his visit ‘Harry the Piano’ will be running interactive student workshops with a number of Taunton School musicians. Following on from this from this he will perform an evening concert in our school theatre alongside guest performances from workshop pupils.

Tickets are now on sale for the evening concert, and we hope that you are able to join us for a truly unique experience. Harry’s extraordinary talent and breath-taking creativity have earned him a reputation as one of the most gifted improvising pianists in the world. Celebrities and critics alike have lined up to shower him with praise. No other musician can spontaneously reinvent Michael Jackson in the style of Mozart, recreate a night at the Groucho club through the TV themes of its actor members, and improvise a seamless medley of audience requests ranging from James Bond to Shostakovich via West Side Story.

An unmissable evening of musical entertainment.

RECEPTION SPACE MORNINGOn Thursday 6th February, the children in Reception had a very exciting visitor. Miss

Loaring, from the Senior School, came to teach them all about the Solar System. After talking about the names of the planets and whether a planet is hot or cold, she showed them how the planet sizes vary and how big they are in relation to the sun. Finally, the children used different, round objects to order the planets and went outside, onto the playground, to explore how far each planet is from the sun. What an exciting morning! The children couldn’t wait to share their wonderful learning experience with their friends at playtime and it was lovely to hear their new found knowledge. Thank you so much Miss Loaring for providing the Reception children with such a valuable learning experience.

SATURDAY ENRICHMENTOver the past 2 weeks, enthusiastic children taking part in the DT programme having been busy making bird feeders for

their gardens. To do this they have been using some of the bigger tools in the DT classroom such as the disc sander, bench drill, pillar drill and fretsaw to sand, cut and drill their wood. Plastic bottles have been recycled to hold the birdseed in place. The children worked hard to be precise with their measuring in order for each part to match up perfectly. They enjoyed decorating their bird table afterwards in order to attract as many birds as possible to the seed.

I think they did a wonderful job and I’m sure the birds will be thankful for their efforts too. James Rowse, Year 3 Teacher

ASTROPHYSICS CLUBMyself, two other girls from the prep school and two year 9s attend the club. It is

every Thursday lunchtime and we are currently discussing jobs in space and the Hubble telescope. Last week, we estimated the size of a crater on the moon using an equation and the week before we looked at how telescopes are designed using mirrors. We also did an experiment to see how it works using a laser. This week, we were doing an experiment to see the impact of craters on the moon from different heights (we dropped marbles from different heights using a ruler to measure, into sand) and we found out that the higher you drop it, the bigger the impact. We are hoping to look at constellations and the moon cycle in future.

YEAR 5 FOREST SCHOOLOn Thursday 6th February, Year 5 ventured down to Forest School to bring their English text ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ to life.

They considered what life would have been like for Michael (the main character) after being washed up on a desert island, overcoming the shock of falling off the Peggy Sue and trying to survive with no resources. The children were able to show empathy towards the character and built fabulous dens with only the natural resources around them. Well done, Year 5 for superb teamwork, effort and for aiming high!

VISIT TO THE ROMAN BATHSThe Year 3 children brought their learning of the Romans to life with a visit to the Roman Baths in Bath. They dressed

up in togas, communicated with each other using Roman letters and numerals and handled Roman artifacts. On a tour of the Baths, the children got to see how the Baths were heated using a hypocaust and they could see first-hand the different rooms the Romans used, such as the frigidarium and the caldarium. The children had an amazing time bringing their learning to life. James Rowse and Katie Hill, Year 3 Teachers

YEAR 3 STEM MORNINGYear 3 were lucky this week to have taken part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,

Maths) morning with Mr Ashmore. Mr Ashmore kindly set up activities for the children that involved them having to investigate magnets which tied in with what the children have been learning in their Science topic this half term. Activities included investigating which magnets were the strongest, discovering which materials were and were not magnetic, being challenged to use magnets to build structures and finding out if magnets can still attract magnetic objects through different materials. The children found out lots of useful information to help them with their scientific topic and had a very enjoyable morning while doing it. Thank you Mr Ashmore.

U11 IAPS BOYS HOCKEY

HOCKEYOn Monday 3rd January the U11’s played in the area

qualifier at Kings College. TPS started really strongly in their first game and played some of their best hockey against Durlston Prep transferring the ball with great accuracy and ran out eventual winners 4-1. (Blackwell, Roberts, Davidson, Winsor). Next up were Dean Close – this was a far harder encounter and although TPS had the majority of the chances our only goal came from a short corner with Brodie D deflecting in the shot from Jack B (well worked corner Mr Abell!). TPS only just held on to win 1-0 with Luca G making some important saves. Only requiring a draw in their final group game to progress to the Cup competition they faced Cricklade Manor. Another 2-0 victory (Davidson, Winsor) meant the team finished top of their group and would play the 2nd placed team, Bournemouth CS, in a parallel group in the quarter finals. Almost reinvigorated by reaching this stage the team started to press more when not in possession and transfer the ball when in control. Zach P played a key part in this game helping to control the midfield. A 5-0 win (Thomas, Roberts x 2, Blackwell, Winsor) meant we would go on to face Kings Hall in the semi-final. This turned out to be the closest and most nail biting of all the games. TPS took the lead) but it was Kings Hall who had possibly had the better of the first half. A second goal gave us a 2-0 but Kings Hall continued to fight back and scored to leave TPS progressing to the finals as 2-1 (Winsor x 2) winners. The final was against Hazelgrove. TPS probably dominated the possession again but could not get any shots away. It would be Hazelgrove though who, with their only shot in the first half, broke away to take a 1-0 half team lead. With time running out and TPS still not able to get a decent shot on target it was left to Jack B to equalise from a short corner.

This time scoring direct following the injection. With the scores finishing on 1-1 the game went to golden goal. The winning goal, scored by Brodie D in open, then led to scenes of jubilation from the TPS players, and some tears, which meant the team ended up winning the tournament.

This was a real team effort during the day with Harrison, Harvey and Gethin all working hard at the back keeping the opposition away from our D. The team now qualifies for the national finals at Rugby School in March.

U13 IAPS BOYS HOCKEYOur U13 side travelled to Millfield with confidence

gained throughout the start of the season. Having scored over 40 goals as a group already this season the hopes had been set high for the day. We started strongly against West Hill winning 7-0 showing great composure all around the pitch and clinical finishing in the circle. Clifton second was our glitch game with a strong first half and multiple shots on target forced some outstanding saves from the Clifton keeper. Taunton boys somewhat unsettled by this led to a less structured second half with Clifton converting a counterattack well and seeing the game out to win 1-0. With a point to prove in the 3rd game Taunton bounced back winning 4-2 vs FSM to go through 2nd to the cup along side Clifton. A big quarter final vs Millfield brought out great fight in the squad with a late first half goal to put Taunton in front. An even second half with chances either end made for a tense finish to the game that the boys coped with brilliantly and

secured the semi-final place and spot into Nationals. Both the semi-final and final brought out the best hockey from the boys which was great to see with superb team and individual goals all round. Scoring 12 in these last two games and winning comfortably was no less than the group deserved and showcased the talent they will take into the National Finals.

Well done Jack B, Jack P, Oscar B, Kian R, Frey L, Hugo M, Will H, Brogan F, Ben M & Henry K.

NETBALLU11A MILLFIELD NETBALL TOURNAMENT

On Saturday 1st February the U11A team went to Millfield to compete in a tournament.

The first match we played was against West Buckland and we won 6-3, next we had a great game against Sandroyd which we won 7-0. The next three matches were challenging, however, we came out with good results! The first of the three matches was against Redmaids, this was the toughest match in our group, but we fought hard and ended up with a 4-4 draw. Our next match was Hazlegrove which we won 7-1 this was a great game, followed by a match against All Hallows which we also won 8-6.

Next it was the semi-finals, we faced a very tough welsh school, Twyn. Unfortunately we lost this match 3-9 but we could not let our spirits fall as we still had one more match. The 3rd/4th playoff match was against Redmaids, which we had previously drawn against. We knew we needed to win it!! We did win and we came out with a great result of 8-6 to us! Overall, we came away with 3rd place which as a team considering we only had 7 players, we were very proud of!!

U12B MILLFIELD NETBALL TOURNAMENT

The U12B Netball squad travelled to Glastonbury on Wednesday 4th February for the annual Millfield Netball tournament. With six games ahead of them on a sunny afternoon, the girls were in high spirits and focused for the challenges that lay ahead. Throughout the duration of the tournament they were faced with some tough competition, but the girls continued to work hard, keep possession of the ball and maintain the basics. After some initial nerves and a draw in their first game against West Buckland 1-1, the girls settled into their match play. In their second game goals begun to flow and TPS showed that they could move the ball down the court succinctly. The 6-1 win gave the girls confidence for their remaining four games, culminating in just one defeat, against the tournament winners, Redmaids and a commendable 3rd place. Well done, girls! Congratulations on finishing 3rd. It was wonderful to see the progress you made, as individuals and as a team, throughout the afternoon. Mrs Coleman

U12A NETBALL V KING'S HALL

Wednesday afternoon saw Taunton U12As travel to Kings Hall. The team knew that it would be a tough game as they had beaten us by 1 goal in last week at a tournament. When we arrived we looked at the aspects that let us down and tried to improve on them, which really paid off. In the first quarter we scored the first goal but soon after they evenly matched us, with the quarter ending in a draw. The second quarter ended with Kings taking the lead 3-2, which then gave us the motivation to push on and win the last two quarters. In the third quarter we erased our previous mistakes and made it a draw. The last quarter really displayed periods of great play and secured the win with the match ending 9-6 to Taunton.

Keira Hughes and Catherine Kemmish (Year 7)

U13D NETBALL V KING'S HALL

A big well done to the under 13D’s in their match against kings. The score was 12-12. Taunton played very well as defenders marked players, batting the ball away from the opposition, and attackers were constantly shooting. In the match, Cara Cunningham scored some great goals, as did Olivia Foster, both shooters were always getting into space. Emily Chorley was a great defender and was constantly defending the opposition. Anna and Matilda were good markers and Georgina was always running for the ball. Kylie was always standing where we needed her and she was a fast runner. Millie did a great job passing to the people that were in space.

It was a great team display and a really enjoyable afternoon of netball.

Olivia Foster (Year 8)
