VOL 201526 14th May 2015
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Carers
NAPLAN This week the children in our Year 3 & 5 classes have sat for the annual National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). This annual testing program is valuable as it gives us benchmark data to measure our school's performance.
From my point of view the school has been improving over the past four years. Each year the test is different and the children under taking the test are a different cohort of children. While it is not fair to compare different groups what is pleasing is that our school has been improving over the past four years in most areas.
The results for his year are expected to be delivered to schools early in Term 4.
Use of Money I was recently reflecting to the children that the use of money has changed over the past 50 years, since I was a boy at school. My most common use of money was the small change from buying a bottle of milk at corner store. Often I would be allowed to purchase a chocolate or lollies with the change. Usually this amount was between one penny and six pence ( six pennies).
Today few children will go to the store with cash on such errands. Children observe their parents:
* Withdrawing money from an ATM;
* Paying for items by eftops or paypass
As adults the most common use of mathematics for us is related to money, be it in our saving or our debt. The challenge for us is; "How do children gain an understanding of money when they will handle it less and less?"
The simple answer is to allow children to handle money to appreciate the value. This can be done by implementing some of the strategies at home:
* Giving children pocket money.
* Counting coins.
* Going to the shops and paying for items with cash.
* Going into your bank branch and allowing the children to deposit their pocket money as well as withdrawing some money.
* Let the children see you use cash, as well as electronic banking and paywave.
Parking Around the School There will never be enough parking for every family, to find a space. I ask parents to be respectful and cooperative when utilising the school car park. Some tips to make it easier include:
1. Driving to the end of the car park and use all the spaces available, especially in the morning.
2. Not double parking or parking in No Parking Zones, which are clearly signed posted.
3. Not parking in the Bus, Commercial or Disabled spaces.
4. Parking offsite and walking to the school to collect your children.
5. Not parking on the footpath.
The school's car park and the surrounding streets are patrolled by the Police and Ipswich City Council. Please observe the rules or you may have a fine to pay.
A Day made Better The ‘A Day Made Better’ hunt for Australia’s best teachers is well underway with over 1,500 teachers nominated and more than 2,500 messages of support. But with only three weeks to go, we know there are many more exceptional teachers out there that inspire students every day.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a student, parent, family member, friend or colleague, if you’re not counted on the leaderboard yet please show your support and nominate an extraordinary teacher that has gone above and beyond the call of duty.
Principal's Position As previously advised I will be moving to a new position at the end of this term. My personal email address will not be accessed, from the end of the term.
Please note that [email protected] is an alternative email address, should you wish to contact the principal.
Kindest Regards Peter Doyle Principal

Time out Poster The Department of Health have recently revised the time out poster listing a range of medical conditions which could require children to stay away from school. This poster can be found at the following link. http://www.health.qld.gov.au/ph/documents/cdb/timeout_poster.pdf
If you have any questions in relation to your child's health please check with your family's medical practitioner.

Payment schedule is as follows:
• Monday 23rd February, first payment due of $200.00 • Monday 23rd March, second payment due of $250 • Monday 27th April, third payment due of $250 • Monday 27th July, final payment due of $200
Payment for School Events, Excursions When the school organises an event all parents are expected to meet the deadline for payments. We give as much notice as possible for the events and provide options for payment. However, late payments place a burden on the school’s staff. The cut off for school camps is two weeks before the event and the cut off for school excursions is one week before the event. Kind Regards Trish Hollands Deputy Principal
SIGN OUT PROCEDURES There have been a number of parents who are coming into the school, going directly to your child’s classroom and pulling them out. The correct procedure at Springfield Lakes State School is:
• Parents must always come to the Administration Office as the first point of call • Parents must sign your child out if they are leaving the school grounds • Administration staff will call your child’s class and have them sent up to the office with their bag or • Parents will be given a leave pass if the option is for them to collect their child from class.
Your adherence to Education Queensland policies and procedures would be greatly appreciated.
P & C NEWS
The P&C Fundraising Committee would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers who supported our Mothers Day Stall. Many mothers gave up hours, or even their whole day, to help serve the kids. We really appreciate our volunteers!!!

Dear Parents and Carers
There seems to be some confusion in regards to payments of invoices. Please find information below in regards to the various payment options that are available to you.
Cash payments – We would appreciate correct money if paying at the payment window as the school does not hold change.
Eftpos and Credit Card Payments - Mastercard and Visacard transations can be processed at the payment window for all invoices. PLEASE NOTE - We cannot accept American Express, Amex or any other international card for payment of invoices.
Bpay Payments - minimum payments amount of $10 or more.
Direct Deposit - When making a payment directly to the schools bank account, please ensure that a
description is entered ie: child’s name and class so that we can credit the payment to your child’s account.
STUDENT ABSENCE LINE Parents are requested to call the Student Absence Line on 3437 9860 to advise the school
if your child/ren will be absent.
STUDENT PERSONAL DETAILS We are reminding parents to ensure that all contact details are up to date. We have had a number of incidents of late where we have needed to contact parents due to accident or illness and the phone numbers that we have on file are incorrect or have been disconnected.
MESSAGES TO STUDENTS We are receiving an increasing number of messages to pass on to students in relation to end of day arrangements/pickup. It becomes extremely difficult to pass these messages on to students when we receive calls from parents minutes before the bell. We ask families to please make arrangements before leaving in the morning. MOBILE PHONES Bringing mobile phones to school is not encouraged by the school because of the potential for theft and general distraction and/or disruption associated with them. However, we understand that on occasions parents require their children to have a mobile phone. This is to be logged into the office on arrival at school, with the mobile phone register being signed. Children collect their phones and sign them out in the afternoon.
WHEN PACKING LUNCHES FOR OUR CHILDREN PLEASE KEEP IN MIND CONVENIENCE IS NOT ALWAYS THE BEST SOLUTION . The small cans of spaghetti or fruit with the pull ring lids are a very convenient solution for a meal but have also caused nasty accidents for little fingers. Please be mindful of this and perhaps take the time to open and pour the contents into a small plastic container.
MR DOYLE LIKES DOGS While Mr Doyle likes dogs not all dogs like each other.
Please do not bring your dog to school as some dogs bite and some dogs like to fight.

Protect your Bike - Bicycle Identification Card
For everyone who owns a bike, big or small
Bicycle Identification Card
It doesn’t matter what type of bike you own, if you don’t have it engraved to prove ownership how will the police be able to contact who it belongs to.
Thousands of bicycles are recovered by police each year and most are never reunited with their owner simply because the person can’t be found.
The NHWQ Bicycle Identification Card is a simple way for you to record important information about your bike to prove that you are the owner.
If your bike is ever stolen or lost, you can present the Bike ID Card to the local police to see if they have in their possession.
Simply fill out the Bike ID Card Bicycle Identification Card attached and keep it in a safe place.
Remember, report bicycle theft to police, regardless of the value of the bike.
You can also find the NHWQ Bike ID Card at: http://www.nhwq.org/resources/ if you need further copies.
