2. Wireless 1394 working group and ARIB standard (ARIB STD-T72)

In Wireless Home-Link Committee of MMAC, Wireless 1394 (5 GHZ) has already been developed, which was approved as Japan ARIB standard (ARIB STD-72) in March, 2001.

Wireless 1394 (25/60 GHz) has been investigated as well.

UWB Working Group has been set up from August, 2002. (Director: Yukitoshi Sanada)

New-Generation Networks Working Group has been set up from August , 2002. (Director: Hideaki Sato)

“1394 Over UWB” SIG has been set up from May, 2003.

(Director: Honggang Zhang)

3. Wireless 1394 and “1394 Over UWB” for ubiquitous home networking

Multimedia Enjoyment is important! All-work-no-play makes Jake a fool boy.

Connectivity and interoperation is needful! Various multimedia home appliances may feel

lonely without “talking with each other”. Mobility is required!

Want a notebook PC or a video camera with a long tail ? (No-new-wire solution)

Why a new wireless home networking specification?

No previous wireless home networking standard has been optimized for entertainment multimedia.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and others include core optimizations (e.g., MAC & PHY) for their target markets only.

A multimedia solution needs to have: simplicity of use advanced QoS (real-time aspect for streaming

data) sufficient data rate and spatial capacity low cost (low complexity) support long battery life a scalable security platform

How about aspects of IEEE 1394 ?

High speed data transmission – 100, 200, and 400 Mbps, up to 3.2 Gbps in future Real-time (Isochronous/Asynchronous) dual mode . – Isochronous mode guarantees constant transmission speed – Asynchronous mode guarantees data reliability Hot plug operation with an automatic reconfiguring

function – plug-and-play Flexible topology with the combination of star and

daisy chain connections

Consumer’s demands for high-speed, high-performance wireless entertainment & computing network (streaming contents, full motion video) are increasing in home environment.

IEEE 1394-based UWB system is a promising solution.

There were some successful examples from microwave band to millimeter wave band.
