Studies show the success of students residing on campus versus those who choose to commute vary for multiple rea-sons. Students living on campus are not only more active in community events, but reported having stronger, more meaning-ful relationships with their peers. The feeling of belonging on campus directly effects the students’ academic perfor-mance. Students who continued to reside on campus reported having a higher overall Grade Point Average (GPA) than those students who commuted daily.

Financial responsibility can also be a factor in deciding whether a student will reside on or off cam-

pus. At NKU, Financial Aid and Scholarship funds can apply to on-campus expenses. Students can also be worry free each month without having individual bills such as electricity, WiFi, and water - NKU Housing is all-inclusive. Campus housing offers a variety of floor plans for which students can choose. From a traditional residence hall, to apartment and suite options, NKU Housing offers numerous housing layouts to suit any style.

CollegeIn the 2013 MapWork Survey, students were asked if they are meeting people on campus they like, meeting people who have similar interests, and meeting people who have included them in their activi-ties. Students living in campus housing showed significantly higher levels of peer connections than those students who commute.

With more than 200 campus organizations ranging in focus from creative writing to Frisbee competi-tions, as well as a wide array of intramural sports, students are sure to find a group that shares their interests and may spark new enthusiasm.

By participating in on-campus organizations, students learn invaluable life lessons, build leadership skills, service their community, and establish friendships that last a lifetime.

Life

Living Learning Communities at NKULiving Learning Communities (LLC) are residential areas designated for students who share a common interest. An RA (Resident Assistant) who has been trained specifically for that residential area is available to assist in the development of a positive community. RA’s focus on the common interest or characteristic of the Residence Hall and provide resources for students living in that area.

LLC’s include an educational component and are always partnered with an academic or student affairs department on campus.

Why Live in a LLC? National studies show students who are involved in college and who live on campus have higher rates of success than those who do not. LLC’s are a great opportunity to combine education and learning opportunities with social involvement and meeting new people! To get involved, just checkmark the LLC you’re most interested in joining on your hous-ing application!

The Norse Experience

This community provides an introduction to life as a Norse for first-year students. Through shared academic, social, cultural and service activities, students will engage in the Northern Ken-tucky University community.

Norse Experience focuses on providing resources for a suc-cessful transition from high school to college while building relationships amongst peers, faculty, staff, and alumni.

First-year Experience communities provide students with the opportunity to connect with other first-year students on campus. Programming and community building activities are designed around small group and individual community needs.

Students receive; • Support from in-house Resident Assis-tants• Student staff Peer Mentors who provide additional focus to community building and academic success for their residents. (Norse Hall & Woodcrest Apartments only)• Access to resources and opportunities on campus.

Living in these communities is ideal for students focused on transitioning from high school to college while maintain-ing a higher level of independence and privacy.

First-Year Experience

The College of Business and College of Informatics Living Learning Community provides a unique and interactive learning environment intended to enhance first-year experience by pro-viding opportunities for social interaction with others who share similar goals. With a focus on exploring business related skills, students who live in this community will not only have the ability to develop strong rela-tionships in and out of the classroom, but will also have access to various networking

and professional skill building activities. Students will live near each other on campus, and also be enrolled in two courses, Intro to Business (BUS 101) and Computer Literacy and Informatics (INF 101) with integrated content between the two courses. Open to students majoring in business or business informat-ics, this community is geared towards devel-oping academic and professional abilities.

Develop networking and professional development skills through engagement with other STEM students, faculty and staff. Being involved in the STEM community will enhance a student’s social and intellectual growth by provid-ing opportunities to learn and interact with each other and with members of the STEM community through academic and social events.

S.T.E.M. CommunityScience, Technology, Engineering, Math

The Leadership Living Learning Commu-nity supports students in identifying and developing leadership skills early on in an academic career. Students will engage others across the University in order to build a leadership

foundation in ways to use this leadership beyond NKU. This community strives to assist students in identifying their own personal leader-ship style while exploring their values and leadership theories through relevant and current literature and world events.Students will examine how their identities

The Honors Community is open to full-time undergrad-uate students who have been invited into the Honors Program or are the recipient of an academic scholarship. This community of creative and academically motivated scholars wishes to develop a success network by creating lifelong, supportive relation-ships through proactive and interactive programming designed specifically for their needs. This community will also provide them with knowl-edge of the opportunities and resources available on campus.

The College of Health Professionals Community offers a close-knit community of students with a sim-ilar focus - a career in healthcare. This community focuses on helping students to succeed in their cho-sen major within the College of Health Professions and build relationships amongst other College of

Health Professions students. Advisors within the College of Health Professions work with this learning community to provide additional support.Students must be enrolled with-in the College of Health Professions (Pre-Nursing, Nurs-ing, Radiological Technology, Respi-ratory Care) to be considered for this community.

Fraternity & Sorority Communities

NKU Fraternity & Sorority Communities are open to full-time undergraduate students who have been extended full membership into a Fraternity & Sorority organization. These provide a sense of community that re-spects the Fraternity & Sorority values and ideals of service, leadership, and academics. Together, these floors will collaborate to develop in them a sense of inter-fraternal bonding that in turn aims to re-imagine the collegiate experience.

NKU ROCKSNKU ROCKS works in conjunction with the Office of African American Programs and Services to assist first-year students transition and explore personal and institutional expectations of college life. Students develop effectivestudy habits and skills that will

increase their potential for success, expose them to valuable resources available on NKU’s campus, and provide a comprehensive support system throughout their undergraduate experience.

Friendship Clusters gives upperclassmen an opportunity to obtain housing together. You and three of your friends have the opportunity to reserve your room or apartment in select halls across campus.

In order to be considered, all students participating in the Friendship Cluster must be upper-class students, meet all housing/dining agreements, and submit the required $200 housing prepayment.

Callahan HallLocated on Alexandria Pike, directly across from the Kroger Shop-ping Centre, Callahan Hall offers close community and an opportu-nity to build strong relationships. With an in-house dining hall, The Callahan Bistro, students enjoy the convenience of prepared meals, while maintaining the option to walk to Highland Heights stores.

Northern TerraceNorthern Terrace is the newest addition to NKU Housing. With 900 square feet of space, each suite has plenty of opportunity for personal style and design. Residents can choose a traditional suite or one that includes a kitchen space. And with close proximity to local grocery and food options, as well as Callahan Bistro right next door, food and dining options are unbeatable!Northern Terrace provides students with a large living space with all the conveniences to make the move to NKU feel like home.

With a centralized location in the Boothe Village Residential Community, Kentucky and Commonwealth Halls give students the opportunity to be part of a close-knit community. Through the traditional-style campus living design, students are emerged into a new atmosphere which can be valuable in the transition from high school to college life. While being a more cost-effective option, Kentucky and Commonwealth are popular to residents who enjoy a communal atmosphere.

Norse Hall offers students a higher level of privacy, while maintaining the ability to be in the center of campus activi-ties. With a full bathroom, functional kitchenette, two large bedrooms, and a common living space, students have ample space for comfortable living options. Each suite is furnished with necessary living items such as beds, dressers, table and chairs, and refrigerator.

University Suites offers a variety of living styles to fit the needs of students. With a choice of 2 or 4 bedroom suite options, students have the flexibility to share space or have a room of their own. Each suite offers 2 private bathrooms, a shared common area/living room, and a kitchenette. Suites are already furnished with beds, dressers, desks and wardrobes as well as a refrigerator, cable, and wired/wireless internet.

Woodcrest Apartments offer a number of options allowing students to maintain involved on campus while enjoying the benefits of apartment-style living. Students can choose an effi-ciency, one, or three-bedroom apartments to suit their personal style. Apartments each have private bathrooms, a kitchenette and common living space, and are furnished with necessities of apartment living.
