WELCOME TO THE 11TH BFI FUTURE FILM FESTIVAL The UK’s most important film industry Festival for young, emerging filmmakers!
Join us for four days of incredible masterclasses, industry workshops, panel Q+As and networking opportunities that will inspire you to make films and give you the industry insights you need to pursue a career in the film, TV and creative industries. The Festival programme has been specifically curated around three key themes of Storytelling, Production and Craft Skills, and The Business of Film, and all our events feature incredible film professionals from across the industry.
If you’re a filmmaker (which you probably are) you’ll also need to watch a lot of films and check out the competition. Our team of young programmers have selected some cracking feature films, and curated four programmes of short films submitted to the Festival by young emerging filmmakers (aged 16-25) from across the globe. Our Festival Awards Ceremony takes place on first day of the Festival this year so you have the opportunity to check out the award-winning and nominated films over the course of the Festival.
We’re incredibly excited this year to welcome our new Headline Partner LaCie – designers of world class storage solutions for creatives. We’re delighted to have their support for the Festival, our Future Film Lab Award and our Future Film programme year round. Be sure to look out for special sessions delivered in partnership with them across the Festival.

ONE-TO-ONE SCREENWRITING FEEDBACK Three experienced writers are available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes at the Festival to give you feedback. Whether you have a project underway, are at the ideas stage, or even just have questions about screenwriting, they will be on hand to answer your questions. Appointments must be booked in advance and last 30 minutes. Details on booking are included in your ticket confirmation.
BACKSTAGE AT THE FUTURE FILM FESTIVAL In Partnership with LaCieOur Backstage hub will be co-hosted by LaCie, so as Festival tickets holders do stop by at any time and hear more about them and how they can support your filmmaking, share ideas with other young filmmakers, chat to film industry guest speakers, get on camera to talk about what you’ve watched, heard or created over the four days and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.
FREE NETWORKING DRINKS At 5pm every day during the Festival we’ll be hosting a free networking drinks event for Festival ticket holders. Places are limited and people will be allowed entry on a first come first served basis. Show your ticket at the door along with proof of age if you want the alcohol!

BFI FILM ACADEMYNow in its sixth year and open to young people from anywhere in the UK, the BFI Film Academy offers a real chance for talented 16-19 year olds to develop the specialist filmmaking skills they need to be part of the future of the UK film industry – no matter where they’re from or what their background. The BFI Film Academy offers bursaries to help those in need with costs, ensuring it is open to as diverse a range of young people as possible.
It has been supported by over 200 industry professionals who give their time including Dexter Fletcher, Alex Garland, Destiny Ekhargha, Danny Boyle and Alison Owen. The BFI Film Academy comprises a regional programme of 48 courses across the UK, six specialist residential programmes covering animation, documentary, programming and audience development, screenwriting and visual effects, a one week Craft Skills residential course in Edinburgh and one two week Craft Skills residential programme at the National Film and TV School in Buckinghamshire. The Academy has created more than 4,000 places for young people on courses run across the UK since 2012.
