The last time I wrote about the

"Slippery Slope" of conflict, we

focussed on the assisted

peacemaking responses of

mediation, adjudication and

accountability. The peacemaking responses are

positive initiatives that we take to resolve conflicts,

and help us to not use peace faking (escape or

avoidance) or peace breaking (attack) responses.

Within the sound peacemaking responses, there are

other principles that need to be remembered and

followed. The first principle to keep in mind when

entering a conversation about a conflict is the PAUSE

principle.

PAUSE is an acronym for

Prepare

Affirm relationships

Understand Interests

Search for creative solutions

Evaluate options objectively and reasonably

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 reminds us that real love is not

self-seeking, and the principle that we need to follow

is also explained in Philippians 2:3-4, which says "Do

nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather,

in humility value others above yourselves, not looking

to your own interests but each of you to the interests

of others."

As we seek to understand what really motivates

people and gives rise to their position, we will gain

insights into their concerns, desires, needs,

limitations, and what they value, or fear. It is only as

we understand the interests of others (and are honest

about our own), are we likely to work together to

develop solutions to issues that are mutually

acceptable.

At the heart of this principle is that when raising an

issue with another person, our goals need to be to

seek reconciliation, and thereby bring glory to God.

HELPERS STILL NEEDED Parent helpers are still needed for the following sporting events.

1. Metro Cup is on 18th June (or 27th June wet weather back up date).

Netball and Soccer Years 3 - 6.

STUDENT REPORTS FROM YEARS 3 & 4 AFL GALA DAY (from last term)

Last term was the AFL Gala Day. My team was the Cockroaches. I was having lots of fun on my first game. We were beating the other team in the first half and then during the second half we started to fall behind. In the end we lost by 4 points.

We lost our second game as well but finally won our third. It was a really fun day. By Liam Reid (Year 4)

On Tuesday the 9th of April, Year 3 and 4 travelled to Nowra Show Ground for the AFL Gala Day. We were then split up into teams and the team I was in was called the Bombers.

We played three games throughout the day. We lost one and we won two. I thought the day was awesome. I scored my eight goals. My favourite game was the last one that we played for the day. By India Seccombe (Year 4).

Thank you to our parent helpers on the day too!!

GRIP CONFERENCE Last Friday, the 17th May, 12 student leaders from Year 6 attended a one day workshop ‘GRIP’ Conference about leadership skills at Wollongong University. The aim of the Conference was to instruct and inspire students to become better leaders in their schools. Approximately 500 Stage 3 students from about 30 different primary schools around the region attended. There was lots of great teaching, as well as practical activities that allowed plenty of interaction between students from the different schools. In addition to this were the ‘Loud Noises’ sessions. These were fun games where students could move around, make noise and generally ‘let off steam’! The final one of the day turned into a massive dance party with students ‘bustin’ moves’ around the room. To see the NCS Primary Student leadership team dance ‘Gangnam Style’ is really a sight to behold!

The students represented Nowra Christian School, their families and themselves admirably, asking intelligent questions and behaving maturely. At lunch, there was time for the students to explore some of the parts of Wollongong University together. Some loved the cafeterias and refectories, sharing hot chips whilst sitting amongst the teenagers and twenty-somethings! Others went for a walk among the gardens or to the Uni shop to have a look around. All said that they would love to come to a university like this in the future.

Parent helpers volunteering their time and use of their vehicles, meant that we could attend this excursion, so huge thanks go to: Mrs Dootson, Mrs Cousins and Mrs Burrow. We really appreciated your help on the day.

Unit 3: Peter, the Rock

Week 4: Peter’s Amazing Escape

Acts 12:3-18

Revision: Who helped Peter escape from jail?

Explain how it happened. What do these events tell us about God’s care and protection of His people?

Mr Petts, Chaplain

SCHOOL NEWS

NCS VEGETABLE GARDEN On 15th June from 9 to 11am we are planning to have a ‘garden blitz’ of the primary kitchen garden. During this time we plan to clear the beds and generally tidy up the garden. This will involve jobs such as mulching paths, cleaning out garden beds, emptying and spreading compost as well as some other general clean up tasks. Once this is done the students will be able to get stuck into some more planting.

If you are available, please hold this date and notify Mr McLennan at [email protected]

There will be activities for children (play equipment, sports equipment) and some morning tea at the end.

PLEASE MARK THIS DATE ON YOUR CALENDAR

CAREER’S EXPO As Senior students, those in Years 11 & 12, are faced with immeasurable pressure of their mysterious and looming future, a mid day trip to the Illawarra Career’s Expo organised by Mr Vidler, to inform and inspire, proved valuable to all who attended.

Students picked up countless brochures and insights from the education institutes that were represented. Whether it focused on the future or informed us of endless possibilities, no student went away without new knowledge.

A BIG THANK YOU to Mr Vidler and the organisers of the expo.

(report by James Duggan)
