15 Days Italy Holy Year of Mercy

Day 01: Singapore – Venice (MOB) 27 Aug Assemble at Singapore Changi Airport for your flight to Venice Day 02: Arrival Venice (D) 28 Aug Arrive at Venice airport, transfer to your hotel in Mestre for mass, dinner & overnight. Accommodation: Apogia Sirio or similar Mass: Day 03: Venice (B/D) 29 Aug After breakfast transfer to Tronchetto to take your private boat to Venice island. Upon arrival meet your local guide and start a 2 hours guided tour in Venice. Venice is known as ‘The Queen of the Adriatic’. “A unique position, the grace of her buildings, the changing colors, and not least the total absence of wheeled transport, make Venice the most charming and poetic city in the world.” Our visit begins at the Basilica of St. Mark–golden mosaics from the Second Golden Age of Icons adorn this magnificent Byzantine basilica built to honor the body of St. Mark brought from Alexandria in Egypt. Popes John XXIII and John Paul I were Patriarchs of Venice. After Mass we visit the Piazza di San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale (the palace of the Doge, the political leader of the Republic of Venice). The balance of our day is free to explore this exotic city. Dinner is at a local restaurant in Venice and we return to our hotel in Venice-Mestre for the overnight. Accommodation: Apogia Sirio or similar Mass: Holy Mass at Basilica of St Mark Day 04: Venice - Padua (40km/1h) (B/D) 30 Aug After breakfast, coach to Padua, upon arrival with a local expert guide enjoy a three hour guided walking tour of the city of Padua. The city of Padua has a rich history which is reflected in the uniqueness of its attraction. Tour the Basilica of St Anthony, one of the highlights of a private walking tour of Padua. The huge Basilica of St Anthony, crowned by Byzantine domes and minaret style towers is only second to the Basilica of St Marks for the Asian inspired beauty. The interior of the church is richly decorated courtesy of the generosity of Pilgrims who have made their way to this church for centuries to give thanks to the popular St Antony. Although officially the 13th June is the feast day of the Saint, nowadays pilgrims come all year round to Padua and with the inner cloisters and church filled with happy groups of Pilgrims there is still a sense of life to be held in this church that many of its counterparts have lost. Overnight in Padua Accommodation: Plaza or similar Mass:

Day 05: Padua - Florence (230km/4h) (B/D) 31 Aug After breakfast transfer to Florence. Upon arrival meet your local guide and start a half day tour of the city. Today we visit the Duomo–Santa Maria del Fiore; the Baptistery of San Giovanni with the famous bronze doors by Ghiberti. We see as well the Church of Santa Croce with its stunning facade. It has been referred to as a ‘Tuscan Westminster Abbey’ because of all the famous persons who are buried here, including Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Dante, and Rossini. We end our morning at the Uffizi Gallery, featuring such masterworks as Botticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’.This afternoon browse in the local San Lorenzo market. Overnight in Florence. Accommodation Mediterraneo or similar Mass: Day 07: Florence – Assisi (175km/3h) (B/D) 01 Sep Today we have an early morning departure for Assisi, stopping first at Rivo Torto church, once a vacant animal shed where Francis and his early companions found shelter. Francis and his followers were evicted by an irascible peasant and his donkey. These early friars then begged use of St. Mary of the Angels, paying an annual rent of a basket of fish. We continue on to the tiny Umbrian town of Assisi, nestled on the side of Mt. Subasio. This was the home of Ss. Francis and Clare. We visit the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. Here we celebrate Mass. The Basilica contains the Porziuncola Chapel, constructed in part by St. Francis. Nearby marks the site where Francis surrendered to ‘Sister Death’. The balance of the day is at leisure. Accommodation: Windsor Savoia or similar Mass: St Mary Of The Angel Day 06: Assisi (B/D) 02 Sep Today we visit this “quiet medieval town, imbued with the mystical spirit of one of the most fascinating characters of history”. We begin with Mass at St. Francis Basilica, followed by a tour. We continue with a walking tour of the city, visiting the major sites associated with St. Francis, including the Chiesa Nuova, built over the home of Francis’ family and the Church of San Rufino, with the baptismal font of the Saint. Then we make our way to the Church of St. Clare, where St. Clare lies in repose. Here too we see the original ‘San Damiano’ crucifix that spoke to Francis, urging him to “rebuild My Church.” Francis interpreted the dream literally and went to work on repairing the building at San Damiano. Only later did he understand the deeper meaning of the dream Accommodation: Windsor Savoia or similar Mass; St Francis Basilica Day 08: Assisi - Sorrento (415km/6h) (B/L/D) 03 Sep After breakfast transfer to Sorrento a lovely cliffside town that can trace its ancestry back to the Etruscans. Lunch will be on the road. You can stroll the old streets where the shop windows display “intarsia”, fine pictures done with inlaid woods. At the end of our visit you’ll understand why “Come Back to Sorrento” ranks as one of the most familiar songs in the world. Dinner and the evening are in Sorrento. Accommodation: Carlton International or similar Mass:

Day 09: Sorrento - Capri (excursion) – Sorrento (B/L/D) 04 Sep After breakfast we board a boat for the Island of Capri, where, weather and sea conditions permitting, we will visit the Blue Grotto (not included). The existence of the Blue Grotto was revealed in August 1826 by the German writer August Kopisch, who described its extraordinary beauty. Since then the Blue Grotto has become the emblem of the island of Capri. The lucky coincidence of geological and lighting conditions has created a double enchantment. The sunlight, passing through an underwater cavity and shining through the seawater, creates a blue reflection that illuminates the cavern. We return to Sorrento where the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy this enchanting seaside town. Overnight in Sorrento. Accommodation: Carlton International or similar Mass: Day 10: Sorrento - Pompeii (30km/1h) - Naples (25km/45m) - Rome (230km/4h) (B/D) 05 Sep After breakfast we depart Sorrento for Pompeii, for a visit to the excavations of this Roman city completely buried by the volcanic eruption of 79 A.D. After the destruction of the city, time passed, and Pompeii was forgotten altogether. Engineers found it when digging an aqueduct in 1600. Today, Pompeii is no mere ruin; it’s a time capsule, left to us by Mount Vesuvius. You’ll wander down ancient streets, read the graffiti on the walls, peer into shops and explore the homes of those unlucky residents buried under the stone and ash.We leave the silence of Pompeii for Naples, and a visit to the Naples Museum. The museum is one of the most important and leading archaeological museums in the world. After the visit continue to Rome for dinner and overnight. Accommodation: Holiday Inn Rome, Pisana or similar Mass: Day 11: Rome (B/D) 06 Sep This morning, we join the English speaking community of Rome at the Church of Santa Susanna for Mass. After Mass, we have lunch than we visit the Catacombs of St Calixtus housing many tombs of the early Popes and martyrs. Called by Pope John XXIII “the sublimest and most famous in Rome” these underground burial places for sixteen popes, a large number of martyrs and a great many Christians, contain an intricate network of passages and chambers hewn from the soft Roman tufa. Afternoon, visit St. Peter’s Basilica as we pass through the Holy Doors. With Michelangelo’s dome, it is the most prominent building inside Vatican City. Built over the site of ‘Old Saint Peter’s” constructed by the Emperor Constantine in the fourth century, the new Basilica began construction in 1506. The building absorbed the attention of twenty popes and ten architects before completion in 1626. There are over 100 tombs located within the Basilica. These include 91 popes. Here we see the Papal Altar covered with the sumptuous bronze baldachin by Bernini and the apse, aglow with golden mosaic. In addition to many sculptures and monument by Bernini and other great artists, we will see Michelangelo’s famous statue of ‘The Pieta’. We also visit the tomb of Pope Saint John Paul II. Then we visit the basillica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls, housing the Tomb of St Paul the Apostle, affectionately known as the Apostle of the Gentiles. We pass through the Holy Doors, open only during Jubilee years, Pope Frances will open the door end of 2015. Although heavily restored, the present basilica looks much the same as it did in the 4th century. The balance of the day is at leisure. Dinner and overnight in Rome. Accommodation: Holiday Inn Rome, Pisana or similar

Day 12: Rome (B/L/D) 07 Sep Today we enjoy a tour of some of the sites of Ancient Rome. First we visit the Coliseum. Its real name was the Flavian Amphitheatre, after the emperors who built who built it in the first century after Christ. Coliseum refers to the ‘colossal’ statue of Nero that at one time stood at the entrance. We will walk by the Roman Forum, located in a valley between Palatine Hill and Capitoline Hill. It originally was at marsh, but Romans drained the area and turned it into a center of political and social activity. When the Roman Empire fell, the forum became forgotten, was burid and used as a cattle pastur during the Middle Ages. Next, we visit the Church of St Peter in Chains, built on the site of one of the oldest churches in Rome. The church house Michelangelo’s famous statue of Moses. After lunch, our guide will take us to visit the Vatican Museums, whose treasures include the famous Laocoon statue. Purchased by Pope Julius II some 500 years ago, the museums can trace their origins to this one sculpture. The restoration of the Sistine frescoes reveals startling bright colors – a new light on Michelangelo! The Sistine was commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV to mark the Holy Year 1475. On the Feast of All Saints, 1512, Pope Julius II inaugurated the Sistine Chapel with a solemn Mass. The balance of the afternoon is at leisure. Dinner and overnight in Rome. Accommodation: Holiday Inn Rome, Pisana or similar Mass: Day 13: Rome (B/L/D) 08 Sep We make our way to Vatican City to attend the General Papal Audience at Pope Paul VI Audience Hall (subject to the Holy Father’s schedule). After our visit we will have time for lunch on our own and time to shop at some of the excellent religious articles shops in the Vatican area. We begin our afternoon with a visit to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, the largest church in Rome dedicated to the Blessed Mother. We make a stop at the Church of St. Alphonsus which bears the original icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. We continue to the Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran. It is here that St. Francis persuaded Pope Innocent III to give permission to begin the Franciscan Order. The night before, the Pope had seen a man in a dream and the man was supporting the tottering building of St. John Lateran. The next day, when Francis appeared before Pope Innocent, His Holiness recognized the face from the dream and consented to Francis’ request. Nearby is the Scala Santa, purportedly the stairs, which Christ climbed prior to his condemnation by Pontius Pilate. We celebrate Mass this evening at the Basilica of St. John Lateran. Dinner and overnight in Rome. Accommodation: Holiday Inn Rome, Pisana or similar Mass: St John’s Lateran Church Day 14: Rome Departure (B) 09 Sep After breakfast transfer to the airport for your flight back home. Day 15: Arrival Singapore 10 Sep
