PERDEKOP - The small community of Perdekop was shocked when the news of the death of one of their own broke on Friday, 18 December 2015, after he had shot himself on Thursday evening at his parents’ home. It is reported that Detective Constable BL Thwala, aged 32, who was stationed at Perdekop Police Station went to his parents’ home that evening after work.

According to family he looked relaxed like always when he visited with his family.

It is alleged that the officer went to a bedroom in the house, while alone in the room,

they heard a gunshot. When they went to investigate, they found him lying in a pool of blood. When paramedics arrived on the scene he was declared dead. The deceased apparently killed himself with his service pistol.

An inquest was opened for investigation, but the reason he took his own life is still unknown. Police confirmed that he was unmarried at the time of his death. He was laid to rest on 22 December 2015 in his hometown of Perdekop. Many police officers of the section cluster paid their respects on the day. DM

STANDERTON On Thursday, 31 December 2015, some vehicle owners watched in disbelief as their cars were damaged in the parking area outside of Standerton SuperSpar.

A Land Rover Defender came down Princess Street and hit an Opel Corsa at the intersection of Beyers Naudé and Princess Street and continued further along the road when it suddenly veered right and crashed into a stationary Land Rover Discovery. Behind the Discovery was a Toyota Fortuner that was also damaged by the impact. A fourth vehicle was also damaged in the chain collision.

The reason for the chaos was that the man behind the wheel of the Defender suffered an apparent heart attack. Nobody was injured during the crash as there were no occupants in any of the other vehicles when the incident occurred. Police and paramedics arrived at the scene and the driver of the Defender was removed from the vehicle into the waiting ambulance for medical attention. A relative of the man arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and told the police that the man had just left the doctor’s practice to receive treatment for a heart attack. He was taken to hospital for further medical treatment. DM

JD

Man arrested for child’s murder

STANDERTON - What was supposed to be a celebration of the new year turned into a tragedy when a 33yearold man came home from a drinking spree and confronted his 30-year-old wife and a fight broke out between the two. The incident happened in Extension 6 on New Year’s Day. It is reported that the woman was working in the kitchen while holding their 9monthold girl when the man allegedly grabbed a knife and attempted to stab his wife. He reportedly missed and stabbed the child in the head instead while she was still in the woman’s arms. The woman retaliated and stabbed the man in the chest with a fork.

When the neighbours heard the screams, they hurried over to intervene. They found the child bleeding in the mother’s arms so they took the child by car to the Winifred Maboea Clinic in Extension 6. Upon arrival the child was declared dead. Police arrested the man, but he was also admitted to hospital for treatment. Lieutenant Nhlabathi confirmed that the suspect is under police guard in hospital, once he is discharged, he will face a charge of murder. DM

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” (John 15:1-2 NKJV)

All of us have big dreams and goals at the beginning of a new year, but as time slips by these dreams and goals seem to become smaller - some even dissappear. Why is this? I believe it’s because we look into ourselves for the ability and willpower to make it all happen, instead of looking to Jesus, our true vine. If you read the whole passage of scripture, you will see in verse 5 that God teaches us that without Him we can do nothing. Scary, isn’t it?

Now, let’s look at the promise God gives His children who whole-heartedly trust Him to be the giver and source, the keeper and protector, the reason and purpose of life. In verse 7 God says: “If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”

What a wonderful God. You see, people tend to look at this

verse and assume that this gives them grounds to just pray for a bigger house, more money and every wordly desire that looms in their flesh, but no. God knows that when you know Him as your Heavenly Father, you will also know how to pray and your desires will be filtered through the Holy Spirit working in you to reveal and manifest God’s best for you in your life.

Your dreams and goals will never reach its true potential without an intimate relationship with the one and only living God. Why don’t you start this year off differently and seek God and His Kingdom first, which is His righteousness for us through His beloved son Jesus Christ and His peace and joy through the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).

Only then will you begin to experience true success in every area of your life (Matthew 6:33). May all God’s dreams for His children be manifested in their lives for His glory in 2016 and beyond. Remember, in Christ you are a new creation, the old is gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17). It’s not too late.

Skakel 071 692 3579 of 017 719 1118 vir verdere navrae. JD

JD

SAKHILE - The Sakhile Police arrested a man after members of the public informed them that the man is using and selling drugs.

Constable Segasa went to the address and found the suspect where after a search of the pro-perty was conducted. Ten Man-drax tablets were confiscated and the suspect said that he smokes these tablets and it is for his own use. He was arrested and taken

to the holding cells in Sakhile and will appear in court in due course.

In another case information was also supplied that led police to a room in Sakhile and after it was searched, they found seven plastic bags full of CAT.

The suspect said that he had to sell drugs as he is unemployed. The suspect was placed under ar-rest and charged for dealing in a forbidden substance. JD

STANDERTON - A 21-year-old man was trying to make a quick buck, but his luck was cut short when police, acting on tip-off, busted him with his stash of dagga at the taxi rank on Tuesday, 29 December 2015.

The man from Extension 6 in Sakhile spent the night in po-lice custody and faces a charge of the illegal possession and selling of dagga. Dagga with estimated street value of R2 100 was confiscated from him.

Another suspect who police believe was in possession of drugs ran away when he saw them, but he was apprehended a short distance from the taxi rank.

Although nothing was found in his possession, police still believed he is involved in drug dealing. He was taken in for questioning but later released on a warning. Lieutenant Nhla-bathi confirmed that the sus-pect was due to appear in court on 30 December. DM

‘n Vorige lokprent bevat uit-treksels uit Roets se onderhoud met dr Anthea Jeffery, outeur van die boek People’s War, New Light on the Struggle for South Africa, wat die ANC se people’s war-strategie behandel.

JD

STANDERTON - Forty-two aborted SAPS vehicles were put on auction on 15 December 2015 at Standerton Police Station.

The auction started in Ermelo in the morn-ing where dozens of state vehicles were sold. DM

PROVINCIAL - The DA congratulates all successful Mpumalanga matriculants for the 2015 academic year, despite the province seeing an overall decrease in the matric pass rate from 79% last year to 78,6% this year. It is also a sad reality that the mathematic pass rate in Mpumalanga has declined.

A decreasing pass rate is a bitter pill to swallow for thousands of matric learners with high hopes for their futures. The trend of decreasing pass rates is alarming, and deeply concerning. The DA also congratulates Ehlanzeni District for achieving an 81,6% pass rate making it the top performing district in the province.

The DA once again congratulates Hoërskool Nelspruit for being the best performing school in the province for the fourth consecutive year. The school achieved an astounding 432 distinctions and 213 Bachelor passes. We congratulate the principal, Dr Swanepoel and his entire team for their hard work and continued dedication.

It is however concerning that, despite MEC Reginah Mhaule repeatedly committing herself to supporting underperforming schools, the number of underperforming schools has more than doubled from 32 in

2014 to 70 in 2015. MEC Mhaule must account to the Portfolio Committee on Education on this unacceptable increase in underperforming schools, and must prioritise the improvement of the quality of education offered at these schools.

The ongoing trend of learners dropping out before they reach and complete grade 12 is unacceptable as between 2013 and 2015, 34 310 learners were lost. In 2013, 89 290 learners were enrolled in grade 10 yet only 54 980 learners wrote their matric examinations. The Department of Education must focus on improving learner retention and ensure that learners are supported from the time they start school to when they complete grade 12.

The province has improved its performance in Physical Science from 58,7% to 62,6%, however, Mathematics had a slight decline from 56,6% to 55,5%. All matriculants who did not obtain the desired results are urged to make the most of supplementary exam opportunities.

The DA hopes that all successful matriculants will continue to enrol in the country’s various tertiary institutions in order to cement their futures. (Jane Sithole MPL, DA Spokesperson on Education) JD

Khula-Sakhile, simply the best

Jubilant pupils of Thuto-Thebe Secondary School celebrating their 93% pass rate.

STANDERTON - Khula-Sakhile Secondary School’s class of 2015 has done it again with their 100% pass rate.

At some point the school – in the heart of Sakhile – was labelled the worst performing school and no parent would dare send their children to a school that was notorious and always in the news for the wrong reasons. Today the school has become the pride of Lekwa.

The dramatic turnaround began with the class of 2013 when the school achieved a 100% pass mark for the first time in more than a decade. In 2014 there was a slight drop to 96%, but the class of 2015 has once again achieved a 100% pass rate, sharing the spoils of victory with only one other school in the Lekwa East and West Circuit – Hoërskool George Hofmeyr.

Cosmos News spoke to the Principal of Khula-Sakhile, Mr Madoda Malinga, who said that the secret of the school’s success is a combination of many factors, including a dedicated team of educators who sacrificed much of the their free time during the winter holidays and weekends with extra classes. Hard work and determination by the pupils and a joined effort by parents and the school’s governing body were other contributing factors. “We’ve never lifted our feet off the pedal. We are proud to be the best-performing school in Lekwa West Circuit with Hoërskool Standerton breathing heavily in our necks with their 99,25%.”

While Mpumalanga occupies the fifth position with 78,6% and the Western Province leading the charts with 84,7%, the MEC for Education, Ms Reginah Mhaule, was not pleased with the results. Speaking at Izimbali Boarding School in Amsterdam on Wednesday, 6 January, she read a riot act to the principals whose schools have obtained less than a 60% pass rate. “They must give convincing reasons why they should keep their positions,” she said.

“Ek is baie geseënd!

By haar is haar trotse ma, me Christelle Potgieter.
