What does the 10- day strike by sanitation workers that turned Delhi into a garbage dump tell us about the BJP’s Swacch Bharat cam- paign? Where were its workers, politicians and celebrities when tonnes of dirt lying on the roads of the capital of India? Cleaning the streets when they are cleaned for a photo-op, but watching from a distance when the streets are stinking is pure political and social media hypocrisy. What was the AAP up to? Before entering politics, Arvind Kejriwal claimed that if politics is keechad (dirt), then one has to step into it to clean it. The crisis in Delhi exposed the hollowness of Kejriwal’s metaphors, the contradictions in his politics and philosophy. If Kejriwal is ready to let Delhi go to the dogs, pigs and rats just because he wants to score a few political points, he has suffered a precipitous fall from his perch. Rahul Gandhi’s cameo in the middle of the crisis was a classic example of politicians wanting to have their garbage and turn it into political fodder too. Note what the Congress VP told the striking MCD staff,"If you ask this gov- ernment, you won't get anything. But if you come together and show your strength, your work will be done in five minutes. This strike is the right way to go." Not a word to defuse the crisis, not even an effort to exhort the workers to keep the city clean and find some other method of protesting, but words that only add fuel to the fire.Just a year ago, san- itation staff in Bangalore had turned the city into a garbage dump because of their strike. One won- ders what the Congress government would have said if Rahul had shown similar empathy for the sanitation workers of Bangalore! It is difficult to find a hero in this crisis because everybody is a villain in the drama. The MCD could have easily invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to force the striking workers to resume their duty; the L- G could have released the Rs 493 crore for the salary of the staff before the court intervened and Kejriwal could have attempted a reconcilia- tion before the stand-off. But they instead only contributed to the mess with their dirty politics. In many ways, the blasé attitude of our politicians to the crisis is a reflection of the Indian mindset. Most of us are callous about the way we dis- pose of garbage, we dump it anywhere—on the road, in front of a neighbour’s house, in a nearby vacant plot—and do not care as long as our house is clean. On the streets and roads, garbage dumps have become acceptable parts of our landscape. We do not get shocked when we see stray cows, dogs and rodents feast- ing on piles of dirt. Garbage is part of our geography and chalta hai culture. Joint Declaration between Bangladesh and India during Visit of PrimeMinister of India to Bangladesh- " Notun Projonmo – Nayi Disha"

Vaidehi TamanWith the strike by the sani-tation workers of EastDelhi MunicipalCorporation (EDMC) enter-ing its second week, largemounds of garbage can beseen piled up on thestreets, making walkingand vehicular movementdifficult. Monsoon hasalmost arrived, waterborne disease and infec-tion will spread in this sea-son very fast. Nowadays,Delhi has been cursed.BJP which runs the corpo-ration is happy to lay theblame at the CM’s doorand look at the other way.The corporations have thepower to invoke theEssential ServicesMaintenance Act (ESMA)and force the sanitationstaff to resume work butthat’s far from their mind. There are many environ-mental issues in Delhi. Airpollution, water pollution, garbage, and pollution ofthe natural environment

are all challenges for thecapital. Environmentalissues are one of the pri-mary causes of disease, health and long term liveli-hood impact for India.Trash and garbage is acommon sight in urban andrural areas of India. It is amajor source of pollution.Indian cities alone gener-ate more than 100 milliontons of solid waste a year.Street corners are piledwith trash. Public placesand footpaths are spoiledwith filth and litter. Riversand canals are acting asgarbage dumps sites. Indiais facing garbage crisis dueto excessive consumption. The nation’s waste prob-lem also points to a stun-ning failure of governance. In 2000, Supreme Courtdirected all Indian cities toimplement a comprehen-sive waste-managementprogramme that wouldinclude household collec-tion of segregated waste, recycling and composting.

These directions have sim-ply been ignored. No majorcity runs a comprehensiveprogramme of the kindenvisioned by theSupreme Court. Indeed, forget waste segregationand recycling directive ofthe India’s Supreme Court, the Organisation forEconomic Cooperationand Development esti-mates that up to 40 percent of municipal waste inIndia remains simplyuncollected. Even medicalwaste, theoretically con-trolled by stringent rulesthat require hospitals tooperate incinerators, isroutinely dumped with reg-ular municipal garbage. Arecent study found thatabout half of India’s med-ical waste is improperlydisposed of.In 2011, several Indiancities embarked on waste-to-energy projects of thetype in use in Germany,Switzerland and Japan.New Delhi has implement-

ed two incinerator projectsaimed at turning the city’strash problem into electric-ity resource. These plantsare being welcomed foraddressing the city’schronic problems ofexcess untreated wasteand a shortage of electricpower. They are also beingwelcomed by those whoseek to prevent water pol-lution, hygiene problems, and eliminate rotting trashthat produces potentgreenhouse gas methane. The projects are beingopposed by waste collec-tion workers and localunions who fear changingtechnology may deprivethem of their livelihood andway of life. Anyway, todaythe situation of Delhi hasbecome worst. It is thenational capital of thecountry but stuck and suf-fering in political tusslebetween AAP and BJP.The workers have been onstrike since June 2,demanding that theirsalaries for the months ofApril and May be dis-bursed. Residents of EastDelhi have been suffering

as the workers’ unions andthe corporations negotiatea solution. East Delhi hasbecome a garbage dump. There is an unbearablestench on the streetsbecause people have beenforced to throw their trashout on the open. Delhi wasalready topping the list ofthe most polluted cities inthe world, now it willbecome the city of garbagetoo. The EDMC has beenunable to pay employeeson time for months now,and hasn’t disbursed pen-sions in two years. Many sanitation workers ofthe Municipal Corporationof Delhi (MCD) protestedat Kejriwal’s residence onFriday. Some workers lit-tered garbage in MayurVihar and Patparganjareas of east Delhi toexpress their anger. Lastweek, sanitation workersaffiliated to different unionsfrom the three civic bodies,North, East and South, approached governmentauthorities, all promiseswere done, and salarieswere announced but notdelivered.

India) Kolkata Chapter, in association

with The Sonnet, organised SPEAC for

Nepal. (Sing. Paint. Engage. Arise.

Care.). On this occasion, Mr. Soumyajit

Mahapatra, the PRSI Chairman, pointed

out how the recent earthquakes wreaked

havoc on the citizens of Nepal, how

massive the destruction was and the

way it shook our neighbor to the core.

The widespread destruction didn't spare

schools either.

The main motive behind the event being

organized was to mark the beginning of

a long term relief program which would

help the mangled schools get the dam-

ages repaired and get reconstructed.

Various artists from the city, in a collabo-

ration, are making an audio-visual

album, which would be sold on the digi-

tal platform and in the CD form with the

help of corporate houses, so as to pro-

vide financial help for rebuilding the

damaged schools in Nepal. Moreover, in

order to maximize the influx of funds, the

collection would be done over a span six

months, after which, the proposals for

the funds to be sent to Nepal would be

sent to the Government of India and the

Government of Nepal respectively.

Ceremonial planting of trees marked the

start of the event.

A painting, which was started by Mrs.

Arpita Pradhan and given finishing

touches to by Shri Rupchand Kundu,

who is a professional painter and instal-

lation artist was taken possession of by

Mr. Raj Khandelwal, the M. D. of

Dhanwantary Medicare. The occasion

saw prominent faces from the field of art

and academics- Pt. Debashish

Bhattacharya, Grand Master Dibyendu

Dominique Strauss-Kahn acquitted of pimping charges

Former head of International MonetaryFund (IMF) Dominique Strauss-Kahn hasbeen acquitted of pimping charges. Hewas charged with “aggravated pimping”for allegedly aiding and abetting prostitu-tion of seven women – a charge punish-able by up to 10 years. This acquittal hasdrawn the line under a series of sexualscandals that have dogged Strauss-Kahnand dragged the most intimate details ofhis bedroom proclivities into the publiceye. Strauss-Kahn saw his high-flyingcareer at the head of the InternationalMonetary Fund — and his French presi-dential prospects — implode when a NewYork hotel maid accused him of sexualassault in 2011.During his trial inFebruary, he calmly defended the accusa-tions, saying that while he was a libertinewho enjoyed group sex, he was unawareof any of the women attending the soireeshad been paid to be there. “I must have asexuality which, compared to averagemen, is more rough. Women have theright not to like that whether they are pros-titutes or not,” he said. He said the use ofprostitutes “horrified” him and that paying

for sex would be too great a risk for a manat the head of the IMF, which was busy“saving the world” from the financial crisisthat began in 2008. Even the prosecuterFrederic Fevre called for Strauss-Kahn tobe acquitted, saying that ”neither the judi-cial enquiry nor the hearing have estab-lished that Mr Strauss-Kahn is guilty”.Intheir closing arguments, his lawyers saidthe case against him had “collapsed” intonothing more than an indictment ofStrauss-Kahn`s morals, and the prosecu-tion appeared to agree. In another boostfor Strauss-Kahn, two ex-prostitutes whoattended the orgies dropped a civil lawsuitagainst him, with lawyers saying theylacked enough proof to win thecase.Strauss-Kahn found himself in thedock alongside a colourful cast of 13 char-acters including a senior police officer andbrothel owner Dominique Alderweireld, known as “Dodo the Pimp”. Alderweireldadmits providing prostitutes to friends ofStrauss-Kahn, who are among theaccused, and testified to keeping thewomen`s true nature a secret as theysought to impress the “future president ofthe republic”. Fevre called for a series ofsuspended sentences and fines rangingfrom EUR 2,500 to EUR 20,000 (USD2,800 to USD 22,000) for the 13 otheraccused. “This was not a mafia networkthat was dismantled,” said Fevre, but agroup of friends trying to “satisfy egos, ambitions and quite simply, physicaldesires”.

An air strike by the Saudi-led coalition on the old quarterof the Yemeni capital killed five people on Friday anddestroyed three houses in the UNESCO-listed heritagesite. Residents said the pre-dawn strike was the firstdirect hit on old Sanaa since the launch of the bombingcampaign against Huthi rebels in late March. The missile hit the Qassimi neighbourhood, whichboasts thousands of houses built before the 11th centu-ry.It did not explode but it still destroyed three three-storeyhouses and killed five residents, including a woman anda child, medics and witnesses said. The target of the raid was not immediately clear amidconflicting statements from residents about whetherrebels had occupied one of the houses hit.The old city has already suffered some damage from airstrikes on nearby targets, including the defence ministry, prompting a protest from UNESCO in May.Sanaa`s old city, situated in a mountain valley, has beeninhabited for more than 2,500 years and was a majorcentre for the propagation of Islam, boasting over 100mosques, 14 public baths and more than 6,000 housesbuilt before the 11th century. It was inscribed on UNESCO`s World Heritage List in1986.

However, theGerman prosecutor`s officesaid that the US commentsdid not legally amount toproof of past spy activity.

Pakistan Foreign SecretaryAizaz Ahmad Chaudhry didnot submit any dossier onalleged Indian activitiesinside his country duringmeetings with top US offi-cials in Washington in June,a top American official hassaid.Quite contrary to the reportsthat appeared in main-stream Pakistan mediabefore his US trip, Chaudhryis believed to have told hisAmerican counterparts thatthe purpose of his trip wasnot to lodge complaintagainst India, but to focus onbilateral strategic and eco-nomic relationship.“There is no dossier (onIndia). I can say that cate-gorically. There may be a dossier(inside Pakistan), but he(Chaudhry) did not deliver tous,” said a top StateDepartment official.During his stay inWashington, he held a wide-range of meetings with sen-ior US officials includingDeputy Secretary of StateAntony J Blinken,

Undersecretary of DefenseChristine Wormuth,Treasury UndersecretaryAdam J Szubin, and DanFeldman, SpecialRepresentative onAfghanistan and Pakistan.Ahead of Chaudhry’s USvisit, Pakistani media hadreported that he was takingwith him evidences of Indianintelligence agency RAW’salleged involvement in “stok-ing terrorism” in Pakistan.Every time Pakistan hasraised such issues, the USis believed to have asked forsharing of concrete evi-dences, which has not beensubmitted by it so far. It islearnt that the US side in its

meetings with the Pakistanidelegation led by Chaudhryraised the issue of actionagainst Lashkar-e-Taiba(LeT) and Jamaat-ud-Dawain particular the bail ofLakhvi, the 26/11 master-mind. America wantsPakistan to match its wordsthat there are no good orbad terrorists. While assur-ing the American side thatPakistan is committed tofight against terrorism,Chaudhry is believed tohave told US officials thattaking action against LeTand JuD is a tough and diffi-cult task given their standingand popularity in thePakistani society.

Zimbabweans will start exchanging “quadrillions” of localdollars for a few US dollars next week as PresidentRobert Mugabe’s government discards its virtually worth-less national currency. The southern African country started using foreign cur-rencies including the US dollar and South African rand in2009 after the Zimbabwean dollar was ruined by hyper-inflation, which hit 500 billion per cent in 2008.At the height of the country’s economic crisis,Zimbabweans had to carry plastic bags bulging with ban-knotes to buy basic goods. Prices were rising at leasttwice a day. customers who held Zimbabwean dollaraccounts before March 2009 can approach their banks toconvert their balance into US dollars, the governor of theReserve Bank of Zimbabwe, John Mangudya, said in astatement. Zimbabweans have until September to turn intheir old banknotes, which some people sell as souvenirsto tourists.

Zimbabwe offers new exchange rate: $1for 35,000,000,000,000,000 old dollars

Film: Hamari Adhuri Kahani

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Vidya

Balan, Rajkummar Rao

Director: Mohit Suri

Rating: 2/5

Remember that terrific scene in

Tanu Weds Manu Returns

where Datto's brother makes a

fierce plea for gender equality?

He rips into his regressive rela-

tives who are refusing to let Datto

marry Manu. He asks an elderly

man: "Tu dinosaur ki biradari ka

hai?" That's the question I had on

my mind as I watched Hamari

Adhuri Kahani. This film feels like

it's from dinosaur ki biradari.

Hamari Adhuri Kahani is archaic,

willfully regressive and just bla-

tantly absurd. What's shocking

and sad is that there is so much

talent here - my heart went out to

Vidya Balan, who does her best

to invest her weepy, wilting char-

acter with some personality but is

hobbled by this story. Written by

Mahesh Bhatt, Hamari Adhuri

Kahani is about a single mother,

Vasudha, whose husband Hari,

played by Rajkummar Rao, dis-

appeared five years ago. She still

wears a mangalsutra and writes

fake birthday cards to their son

so that he doesn't think his father

abandoned them.
