Next Thursday, December 17th is the HMS Band Holiday Concert. This newsletter includes more information on the concert. The band students have been practicing hard all school year long, and I am definitely looking forward to the opportunity to watch them showcase their talent. This edition of the HMS Parent Newsletter includes the Honor Roll for Quarter #1. Congratulations to all of the students that earned a place on our Honor Roll. Your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed. Your teachers, parents, and I am very proud of you. Keep up the good work! Sincerely, Dr. William V. Whalen III Principal

Green Team Science During the first few months of school, students have been learning about abiotic and biotic things, how to classify living organisms into one of six kingdoms and understanding that there are different types of cells. Students are wrapping up this week working on their plant and animal projects!!!! We then will begin photosynthesis!!
What’s New At Student Council?
By Grace MacDonald
The HMS Happy Holidays Toy Drive has officially begun! Students and staff are asked to donate new, unused, and unwrapped toys and clothing. If you’d like to buy something to donate, the suggested cost limit is $20. All gifts must be in by 12/18. Please donate to help local families in need! Remember, giving is the reason for the season!
Student Council members made posters advertising the Happy Holidays Toy Drive. These are now displayed around the school. Also, we have begun to advertise for the showing of the movie “Elf”, which will take place in the HMS cafeteria on 12/18 from 6:30 PM-8:30 PM.

Blue Team
ELA:-We have completed Among the Hidden, and students have designed their own final projects. Some projects ideas are diaries from the perspective of a major character, interviews of characters, making graphic novel versions of the book, making crossword puzzles of the vocabulary, writing original song lyrics/poems, making flipbooks, collages, etc. Students are using their talents to showcase the information gleaned from the novel. Class time has been provided. Presentations are Friday, Dec. 11. Science: We finished our Cell City Projects and they turned out great. Some really creative ideas like a zoo, Magic Kingdom, and Kanye and Kim’s house. Since we all know that chloroplasts in a plant cell make the food for the cell, we are now going to learn a more detailed process of photosynthesis. Math: We finished up learning how to multiply and divide rational numbers (positive and negative fractions and mixed numbers). We learned what a reciprocal is and discovered the benefits of simplifying our multiplication problems before multiplying. Now we will be applying these skills to solve some real world problems. In supercore, we have been continuing our exploration of experimental and theoretical probability.
