Why are you here today?
2010 was SharePoint’s tipping point in the market. Its focus on core ECM features helped make this release massively successful.
• Key social features• Community• Document libraries• Lists• Aggregation of enterprise data• Project sites and personal space
Why SharePoint 2010 works
According to AIIM.org research
57% of organizations use SharePoint for ECM/DM
31% consider it to be their main/only ECM/DM system
38% are supporting 2 or more live versions (production systems)
21% of large organizations supporting 3 or more (primarily due to struggles with the upgrade process)

According to AIIM.org research
The biggest ongoing issues for SharePoint are:User adoptionExtending the business scopeGovernanceAchieving uniformity of
classification and metadata
The SharePoint Puzzle (SlideShare) http://slidesha.re/1nnOSu2
According to AIIM.org research
45% of survey respondent planned to move to SharePoint 2013 by mid-2014
This leaves a huge install base of 2010, many of which are “waiting to see” what is in the next version in late 2015
Anecdotal evidence shows that most 2003 and 2007 customers are moving directly to 2013 or Office365 using 3rd party solutions rather than “double-hop”

There is no shame in sticking with your current platform until you’ve paid for your existing investments.
The key to success is to understand what is possible with what you already have.
1 Sandbox Solutions
Sandbox Solutions can be executed in the context of a User Code Service that provide Admins the ability to monitor and meter solution resource consumption to protect the farm from misbehaving code.
2 Social Basics
Noteboard is a micro-blog where users can post short notes on MySites and aggregate the notes of colleagues they are following.
Social Tagging allows end users to provide context to content through use of “I Like It”, comments, ratings and keyword tagging.
Blogs got a major facelift, including the addition of comments, ratings, and the ability to present calendar-based archives of older posts.
Enterprise Wiki was a new repository site template that added a number of features to the standard Wiki page including the ability to insert reusable content blocks, and customized page layouts.
3 Access Services

Access Services. Building on the successful Excel Services pattern, SPS 2010 allows users to publish Access applications to SharePoint which other users can access through their browsers. While more limited than the desktop versions, it offers server-side capabilities such as scalability, one centralized version of the document (browser-friendly format), and access to multiple users and security control.
4 Business Connectivity Services

Business Connectivity Services (BCS)
In MOSS 2007, Business Data Connector (BDC) was the tool of choice for integrating external data sources into SharePoint. BDC was available only to customers who purchased the enterprise version of MOSS 2007. Furthermore, BDC was limited to only reading data from the external data sources.
Business Connectivity Services (BCS), which replaces the BDC functionality in SPS 2010, goes much further. It now supports updating, deletion and insertion of data into an external data source. Another key advantage of BCS is that it will enable SharePoint Lists to be created directly based on a database table.
5 Enterprise Content Management (ECM) improvements
Validation Rules can now be defined on fields and are applied at the object model, not the user interface level. Items created through code, script or the user interface can now have multi-field validation applied consistently.
Multiple records repositories within a single SharePoint installation. Users can route records to multiple repositories. Records managers can define routing rules to aid in classification. Records repositories now support the use of hierarchical structures for storing records in a manner that matches the customer’s organizational hierarchy.
Ability to declare records in-place, i.e., allow any document inside a document library to be marked as a record without the need to explicitly move it to a records repository.
Default Values are self describing and provide the ability to define intelligent default values on content items. Default values can also be location-aware, allowing default values to be defined down to the folder level.
Defining and applying retention rules. For instance, apply a recurring retention rule that specifies several stages of retention. Can now specify a retention rule such as “Maintain this document for three years after project completion then transfer it to the archive for the next five years”.
6 Search improvements
Faceted Search provides refiners that allow users to add additional filters to search results, configured based on metadata, user context, location, and time periods.
People Search Results have been improved, with results now appearing in a business card format.
Organizational Charts use a Silverlight control available through MySites. Provides a sleek UI for team profiles, but highlights the need to build out user profiles.
“Ask Me About” web part that helps users in your organization find answers and experts, but requires you to build out user profiles.
7 Office Web Apps
Office Web Applications are web-based extensions, allowing multi-user authoring and real-time collaboration. An extension to the desktop experience, not a replacement.
8 Document Sets
Document Sets are like folders that contain multiple documents or files, allowing you to apply metadata and rules to the set of documents, as well as to each individual item inside.
They enable an organization to manage a single deliverable, or work product, rather than needing to juggle several separate documents or files.
9 PowerPivot
PowerPivotMicrosoft SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint extends SharePoint 2010 and Excel Services to add server-side processing, collaboration, and document management support for the PowerPivot workbooks that you publish to SharePoint.
10 Taxonomy Management improvements
11 Conditional Routing
Conditional Routing is metadata routing and storage by using Content Organizer. Content Organizer builds upon document routing features that were introduced in the Records Center site template in SharePoint 2007. Instead of directly uploading a document to a library or folder, users can save, route, and automatically apply rules to a document.
12 Asset Libraries
The Asset Library in SharePoint Server 2010 enables users to easily create, discover and reuse existing digital assets within the organization. It is a SharePoint Server 2010 library template that is customized to use content types designed specifically for storing and cataloging rich media assets.
13 Aggregated Calendars
Aggregated Calendars allow teams to keep multiple calendars (up to 10) in sync by creating layers, allowing end users to see color-coded activities. Users can then sync calendars to Outlook, comparing their personal calendar side-by-side.
14 Meeting Workspaces
SharePoint Workspaces provide direct bi-directional synchronization of library and list content between a SharePoint site and a workspace on an individual client computer. Allows individual SharePoint users to check out and check in SharePoint library documents from their local computers, bring SharePoint documents and lists to their computers where they can work online or offline, and synchronize local content with a SharePoint site.
15 It Meets Your Business Requirements
Where the majority of SharePoint deployments fail are around the soft topics: people, planning, governance.
Before you spend any time on customizing SharePoint, understand what is possible out-of-the-box
