did this by creating ap„ecialstudent residential zoning

which allowed for fewer setbacks -- and for larger

buildings on smaller libts than anyplace else in the county,

indeed anyplace else in the state. So that, now we fl

have more cars per bedrooms than anyplace else in the 9

state. The resnit is we have more people -- a lot of 0

welcomed into the community and, indeed, Isla Vista

Elementary School has become famous nationally for its

multi-cultural programs.

But some things remain the same in Isla Vista,

Over 96.5 percent of the community are renters; 55 percent

We have a large labor force, `Seven thousand Of the

community's 17,000 are full-time employed, many in the.
