How did we receive Christ? How do we walk IN Him?

We receive Christ by faith! “… the New Testament declares directly and without

complication in at least 150 passages that men are saved upon the sole principle of faith.” Lewis Sperry Chafer, Systematic Theology

Received παρελαβετε (paralabete, aorist, 2nd person, plural) Take to one’s self, receive, accept

The Colossians are believers, they believed in the past

1 Cor 15:1-3; 1 Thess 2:13; 4:1

How do we walk in Him?

In Him – typically associated with our position

Miracles associated with walking Luke 5 and Acts 3

Walk means our manner of life (1 Thess 2:12; 4:1)

Synonymous with fellowship in 1 John 1:6-7; 2:6, 11

Walk by faith in light of our position in Him Paul’s prayer, Col 1:10

having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. Col 2:7

Having been firmly rooted ῥιζοω (rhizoo, perfect passive participle: a past

completed action with effects in the present) Firmly rooted, fixed to the ground

Agricultural word; rooted like a tree

First step in walking by faith is being firmly rooted in Him Eph 3:14-19

Page 8: 15 ss walk in christ

(and now) being built up in Him, Col 2:7a ἐποικοδομεω (epoikodomeo, present passive participle)

Keep on being continually built up

Built up, build on, edify, spiritual strengthening

Construction term

Used in 1 Cor 3:10ff speaking of the Judgment Seat of Christ

Build up one another with our words, Eph 4:29

Build up by pleasing our neighbor more than ourselves, Rom 15:2

… and (also) established in your (the) faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. Col 2:7b

Established βεβαιοω (bebaioo present passive participle) To be established

To confirm the truth of

To increase in inner strength

In THE faith ESV, KJV, NKJV and NIV all use the faith

Must ensure we are established in THE faith

Page 10: 15 ss walk in christ

… just as you were instructed… Continual process

False teachers always look for a “new” way

Ensure they are rooted and built up in what they have previously learned

Attitude is everything! Overflowing (present active participle), have a surplus,

more than enough, left over Continually be overflowing

Gratitude (thankfulness, gratefulness) Pathway to sin is paved with ingratitude, Romans 1:21 He “lavished” redemption upon us, Ephesians 1:7-8

Page 11: 15 ss walk in christ

Live your life in light of the position you have in Christ! Walk by faith, and not by sight, i.e. in constant

submission to and reliance upon the Holy Spirit

You have been firmly grounded through faith, now continue building on that foundation by continuing to confirm the truths of Scripture.

Attitude is everything!

“A grounded, growing, grateful Believer will not be lead astray!” Warren Wiersbe

“This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of

Me.”

“This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as

you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

1 Corinthians 11:24-25

There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel’s veins;

And sinners plunged beneath that flood, loose all their guilty stains;

Lose all their guilty stains, Lose all their guilty stains;

And sinners plunged beneath that flood, loose all their guilty stains.
