PAGE TWO SAINT CYRIL OF JERUSALEM JUNE 7TH 2020

FROM THE DESK OF FATHER MAC The past three months have likely been the most difficult period we have experienced in our lifetime as we have wit-nessed the monumental suffering and death caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and we have struggled to cope with the severe disruption it has created in our daily lives. As if deal-ing with the pandemic weren’t enough, the events of the past week have caused yet more pain as we have witnessed racial tensions in the wake of the death of George Floyd, yet another young African-American man to be killed while in police custody. This tragic event incited national pro-tests, violence, and looting in various cities across our na-tion, including Los Angeles. While we certainly cannot condone violence and looting as a response to social sin, we share the outrage at this sense-less killing and we can understand the frustration of so many in our society who feel their voices are not heard and that their lives don’t matter simply because of the color of their skin, where they come from, or the language they speak. The violence and unrest that has swept our city and nation is a painful reminder that racism still exists in our society. Racism is a social sin that violates God’s plan for humanity. As Sacred Scripture reminds us, every human person is cre-ated in the image and likeness of God. Every human person is equally valuable and precious in the eyes of God, no mat-ter the color of their skin or their ethnicity. As Christians, we stand in solidarity with all of those who have been victims of racism, hatred, injustice, and unfair treatment. We respect the right to peaceful protest but we must reject violence as a response to social ills. Jesus showed us that the way to respond to violence and injustice is love. Even as he hung on the cross, carrying the full weight of human hatred and sin, Jesus responded in love: “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Love is the path to peace, justice, and conversion. As members of the Church, we are called to love like Christ and work to break down barriers of fear, misunderstanding, hatred and prejudice. These barriers are at the root of all the conflicts that threaten peace on a societal or global level. But all large scale conflicts can always be traced back to conflicts in individual hearts. Nelson Mandela once said: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the hu-man heart than its opposite.” If we can learn to break down barriers in our own hearts, we will become more effective builders of unity, justice, and peace in the world around us and we can teach others to love like Christ loves. YOURS IN CHRIST, REV. EBEN MACDONALD, PASTOR

Safeguarding the Children

Did you Know? DON’T BE AFRAID TO START A CONVERSATION WITH

YOUR KIDS ABOUT COVID-19 If possible, choose a time when your children are likely to want to talk, perhaps at dinner. Ask what they already know and what questions and concerns they have about COVID-19. Everyone reacts differently, but your children’s questions can guide your discussion. Listen and answer their questions with facts in a way that they can understand. If you don’t know the answer to a question, be honest. Let them know that there are a lot of rumors and false information and that you’ll help them learn the facts. If it’s appropriate for their age, you can show them how to search for the answer on a reliable website. Best places to learn about COVID-19 are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organi-zation (WHO). For more tips, please read the article, “How to talk to your kids about COVID-19,” https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/kids-covid-19/art-20482508. The Los Angeles House of Ruth

Late April after we had been under the Safer At Home order for a few weeks, we received a call from an agency in Skid Row. They had discovered a young mother with 5 children all under 6 living in a tent. Our staff reacted with fear at first related to going into Skid Row where there are many Covid 19 cases. With-in a few minutes of considering the families needs two of our emotionally strongest staff members went to pick up the family. Upon arriving at our shelter the mom showered every-one, washed their clothes and became one of our best residents. Somehow this young mother turns out clean and polished children each morning. She is com-pliant with all we ask of her and we have high hopes that she will be able to resolve her issues related to being homeless and become a stable family within a few months. The Los Angeles House of Ruth is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization. All gifts are tax deductible . If you would like to help, contact Sister Jennifer at:
