MAINTENANCE ALLOCATION CHART
SECTION I. THREE LEVELS OF MAINTENANCE CONCEPT
INTRODUCTION
B-1. MAINTENANCE ALLOCATIONCHART.
a. This Maintenance Allocation Chart (MAC)assigns maintenance functions in accordance withthe Three Levels of Maintenance concept for armyaircraft. These maintenance levels, Aviation UnitMaintenance (AVUM); Aviation IntermediateMaintenance (AVIM) and Depot Maintenance aredepicted on the MAC as:
AVUM which corresponds to the O Code in theRPSTL.
AVIM which corresponds to an F Code in the
RPSTL.DEPOT which corresponds to a D Code in the
RPSTL
conserve personnel and equipment resources andair mobility requirements.)
(a) Company Size Aviation Units: Performthose tasks which consist primarily of preventive
maintenance and maintenance repair andreplacement functions associated with sustaining ahigh level of aircraft operational readiness. Performmaintenance inspections and servicing to includepreflight, daily, intermediate, periodic and specialinspections as authorized by the MAC or higherheadquarters. Identify the cause ofequipment/system malfunctions using applicabletechnical manual troubleshooting instructions,
built-in-test equipment (BITE), installed aircraftinstruments, or easy to use/interpretdiagnostic/fault isolation devices (TMDE). Replaceworn or damaged modules/components which do

are normally small and have less than ten aircraftassigned. Maintenance tasks performed by theseunits will be those which can be accomplished bythe aircraft crew chief or assigned aircraftrepairman and will normally be limited topreventive maintenance, inspections, servicing, spot painting, stop drilling, application of nonstresspatches, minor adjustments, module/componentfault diagnosis and replacement of selectedmodules/components. Repair functions willnormally be accomplished by the supporting AVIMunit.
(2) Aviation Intermediate Maintenance(AVIM) provides mobile, responsive “One Stop”maintenance support. (Maintenance functionswhich are not conducive to sustaining air mobilitywill be assigned to depot maintenance). Performsall maintenance functions authorized to be done atAVUM. Repair of equipment for return to user willemphasize support or operational readinessrequirements. Authorized maintenance includesreplacement and repair of modules/componentsand end items which can be accomplishedefficiently with available skills, tools, andequipment. Established the Direct Exchange (DX)program for AVUM units by repairing selecteditems for return to stock when such repairs cannotbe accomplished at the AVUM level. Inspects, troubleshoots, tests, diagnoses, repairs, adjusts, calibrates, and aligns aircraft systemmodules/components. AVIM units will have thecapability to determine the serviceability ofspecified modules/components removed prior to
collection and classification services forserviceable/unserviceable material. Operates acannibalization activity in accordance with AR750-50. (The aircraft maintenance company withinthe maintenance battalion of a division willperform AVIM functions consistent with airmobility requirements and conservation ofpersonnel and equipment resources. Additionalintermediate maintenance support will be providedby the supporting nondivisional AVIM unit.)
B-2. USE OF THE MAINTENANCE ALLOCATION CHART.
a. The Maintenance Allocation chart assignsmaintenance functions to the lowest level ofmaintenance based on past experience and thefollowing consideration:
(1) Skills available.
(2) Time required.
(3) Tools and test equipment required and/oravailable.
b. Only the lowest level of maintenanceauthorized to perform a maintenance function isindicated.
c. A maintenance function assigned to amaintenance level will automatically be authorizedto be performed at any higher maintenance level.

specifically authorized by the maintenance officer ofthe level of maintenance to which the function isassigned. The special tools, equipment, etc. requiredby the lower level of maintenance to perform thisfunction will be furnished by the maintenance level towhich the function is assigned. This transfer of amaintenance function to a lower maintenance leveldoes not relieve the higher maintenance level of theresponsibility of the function, The higher level ofmaintenance has the authority to determine:
(1) If the lower level is capable of performing the
work.
(2) If the lower level will require assistance ortechnical supervision and on-site inspection.
(3) If the authorization will begranted to perform maintenance.
g. Organizational through depot maintenance ofthe U.S. Army Electronics Command equipment will
be performed by designated U.S. Army ElectronicsCommand personnel.
h. Changes to the Maintenance Allocation Chartwill be based on continuing evaluation and analysisby responsible technical personnel and on reportsreceived from field activities.
B-3. DEFINITIONS.
Maintenance functions. Maintenance functions willbe limited to and defined as follows:
a. Inspect. To determine the serviceability of ani b i i h i l h i l d/
d. Adjust. To maintain, within prescribed limits,by bringing into proper or exact position, or bysetting the operating characteristics to specifiedparameters.
e. Align. To adjust specified variable elementsof an item to bring about optimum or desiredperformance.
f. Calibrate. To determine and cause correctionsto be made or to be adjusted on instruments or testmeasuring and diagnostic equipments used in
precision measurement. Consists of comparisons oftwo instruments, one of which is a certified standardof known accuracy, to detect and adjust anydiscrepancy in the accuracy of the instrument beingcompared.
g. Install. The act of emplacing, seating, or fixinginto position an item, part, or module (componentor assembly) in a manner to allow the properfunctioning of an equipment or system.
h. Replace. The act of substituting a serviceablelike type part, subassembly, or module (componentor assembly) for an unserviceable counterpart.
i. Repair. The application of maintenanceservices or other maintenance action to restoreserviceability to an item by correcting specificdamage, fault, malfunction, or failure in a part,
subassembly, module (component or assembly),end item, or system.
j. Overhaul. That maintenance effort( )
