Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2016

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the

heavenly Father, and have told us that who-ever sees you sees Him. Show us your face

and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being

enslaved by money; the adulteress and Mag-dalene from seeking happiness only in creat-

ed things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Par-adise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:

“If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the

Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in

ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anoint-ing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may

bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Fa-

ther and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

All Ministers- Save the Date Please save Wednesday evening, February 3rd, Hospitality at 6:30pm reflection 7:00- 9pm for the All Minister Lenten Reflection. You will soon re-ceive a communiqué from Fr. Chris with more de-tails regarding this evening.

St. Christopher Young Adults

WHEN: Sunday Afternoons, 1:30-3:00 pm (see below for exact dates)

WHERE: Walsh Hall @ St. Christopher Parish,

DETAILS: St. Christopher Young Adults are a group of parishioners ages 18 to 39, single and married, who are connected by our Catholic faith and who actively partici-pate in the life of the Church. Our mission is to “continue lifelong learning in a Catholic environment through spiritual growth, reflection, and service as we strengthen our relation with God though each other, our faith, and our community." The group strives to offer the following programmatic com-ponents on a rotating basis: faith sharing, social events, and service opportunities. Par ticipants are also encouraged to get involved with the liturgical ministries at the Parish.

Please join us on the following Sundays as we build communi-ty, break bread (lunch will be included), and deepen our faith and relationship with Jesus Christ:

Sunday, January 24 from 1:30 until 3 pm Sunday, February 21 from 1:30 until 3 pm

Please contact youth and young adult ministry coordinator Chris Miller at 408-395-7949 or [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event!

The cost is $11:00 and please mail your checks made out to the Over 50’s Club to Lore McCoy at 1311 Vierra Court San Jose 95125. The themes of inclusiveness and solidarity are once again noted in the scripture readings to-day - "For in one spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink in one Spirit." Jesus' focus is on the plight of the marginalized of society - the poor, captives, blind and oppressed. If this message seems so repetitive in the New testament, one might won-der how significant it ought to be in the lives of 21st Century Christians. Pope Francis in "The Joy of the Gospel" pro-vides some very compelling comments : (182) "It is no longer possible to claim that religion should be restricted to the private sphere and that it exists only to prepare souls for heaven. - - - Christian conversion demands reviewing es-pecially those areas and aspects of life 'related to the social order and the pursuit of the com-mon good' (John Paul II)"; (183) "An authentic faith - which is never comfortable or completely personal - always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave the earth somehow better than we found it. - -- If indeed 'the just ordering of society and of the state is a central responsibility of politics' the Church 'cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice' (Benedict XVI)". In this election year might we be attentive to what principles the various candidates espouse which portray their embracement or repudiation of the Biblical message of inclusion and solidari-ty. Any questions or Comments please contact: Doug Harper [email protected]
