Life can change in the blink of an eye. Jeff was just 41 years old when he had a Stroke. Jeff had been making some repairs to the family home, painting his basement ceiling, when he began exhibiting the symptoms of a stroke. He recalls his body slowly starting to shut down, experiencing numbness and his vision blurring. His wife called an ambulance and had him rushed to the hospital; by the time he arrived he was paralyzed on his right side and unable to speak. Jeff has since discovered that he has a condition which makes his blood too thick. His doctors believe the awkward position of his neck while painting may have triggered his catastrophic stroke. “When I was in the hospital after my stroke I couldn’t even eat on my own for the first six weeks – just learning to swallow again was a major accomplishment,” says Jeff. “I really had to learn that the entire pace of my life had completely changed.” Part of his recovery involved becoming a part of Stroke Recovery Canada®, a program of March of Dimes Canada. Jeff wants to encourage other survivors and show them that they can make strides in their stroke recovery – even incremental changes can add up to a big difference. He has become an integral part of his local Stroke Recovery Canada® peer support group.

“You never know what can happen to completely change your life,” says Anna Bauer-Ross. She was a fit 36-year-old mother of two on vacation in the Bahamas when she was struck by a massive brain stem stroke.Airlifted to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Anna spent over three months in hospital and rehabilitation. She had to regain her ability to walk, write and see. She still has severe left-side neuropathy as a result of her stroke, and her vocal chords never fully healed. Now five years post-stroke, Anna lives a full and active life, parenting her teenage girls, attending school with the eventual goal of becoming a social services worker, and volunteering with March of Dimes Canada’s Peers Fostering Hope program.Anna volunteers at Toronto Western Hospital in the acute care ward. She sees patients who may be only two to three days post-stroke. It is the most intense time for stroke survivors and their caregivers. Anna is there to let the people she visits know they are not alone, and to answer the myriad of questions from both patients and family members. Although she typically doesn’t see a patient more than once, being able to provide solace and comfort in the immediacy of a stroke makes her work especially rewarding.

your dollar at WorkStroke Recovery Canada®, a program of March of Dimes Canada, helps stroke survivors across the country to re-engage in their communities, and affirm that there is meaningful and quality life after a stroke. It is a national service offering post-recovery support, education and programs for stroke survivors, their families and health care providers, With over 50,000 Canadians suffering from a stroke each year, the need for community engagement and integration is growing in importance. Stroke Recovery Canada® links stroke survivors and their family members to local peer support groups composed of other stroke survivors. By giving them the opportunity to share their personal stories, struggles and triumphs, they can provide one another with education, information and hope. Through 60 chapters and 2,000 participants across Canada, March of Dimes offers stroke survivors the tools to survive and thrive after a stroke. Stroke Recovery Canada® also provides direct support in the first days following a stroke in Toronto and the GTA our new Peers Fostering Hope Program supported by the Dr. Ed & Bobby Yielding Fund for Stroke Recovery , which arranges in-hospital visits by other stroke survivors, with both experience in coping with the effects of stroke, and training in how to pass on their knowledge and support. By offering an ear, a helping hand and hope, they help stroke survivors bounce back from their trauma and reintegrate into their communities. Presently active in several hospitals in the Greater Toronto area, we are working to expand the program.

With six Grammys, numerous Dove Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and numerous other accolades to her credit, Amy Grant is an American music icon who has erased lines between genres and earned the respect of fans and peers with her honesty, vulnerability and ceaseless creativity. She has sold more than 30 million albums over three decades. The most meaningful work of her life started a few years ago, when her parents were diagnosed with dementia. After arriving home from touring in 2008 and seeing how frail her mother was, Amy cleared her calendar to take care of her. Her mother passed away in 2011 and now she is focusing on caring for her father, who is still living with dementia. Grant’s newest album, How Mercy Looks from Here, came out this past spring (2013), and the music is shaped, in part, by the time she has spent supporting her parents.

The 2014 ABILITY & BEYOND® Dinner will be our fifteenth since inaugurating the event in 1999 as the Paul Martin Sr. Dinner. Mr. Martin was the Minister of Health and Welfare who introduced the polio vaccine in the mid 50’s in Canada. The ABILITY & BEYOND® Dinner has generated significant revenue benefiting our research fellowship and our many programs and services for people with disabilities. This event has an illustrious history, having hosted very special guests and speakers including Alan Thicke, actor Debbie Reynolds- Legendary Hollywood Star, Bob Woodruff-ABC News Anchor , David Plouffe -President Obama’s campaign manager, H.R.H. In 2012, guests were inspired by Hollywood royalty Debbie Reynolds, star of stage and screen, best known for Singin’ in the Rain, The Unsinkable Molly Brown and more recently Will & Grace. The dinner honoured caregivers and gave attendees the chance to be ‘up close and personal’ with a Hollywood legend. Ms. Reynolds shared her very personal story of her experiences as an informal caregiver to many family members and friends while maintaining her career as a singer, actress and author.

An ABC News Anchor, Mr. Woodruff was devastatingly injured by a roadside bomb in Iraq in January, 2006. In an instant, his life was changed forever. Mr. Woodruff spoke of overcoming the challenges of his traumatic brain injury against seemingly insurmountable odds, with the support of family, friends, caregivers and personal determination. Guests left the event having learned what can be achieved with commitment, strength and hope.
