We are delighted to be bringing the 15th edition of Slapstick Festival to Bristol. The festival has very much evolved since its inaugural edition back in 2005, when silent comedy was the sole focus of all 12 events.

As you can see from this packed Festival Guide, which is absolutely bursting at the seams with scintillating one-off comedy events, we are now very much in the business of celebrating Silent, Visual and Classic Comedy. The festival is divided into a strong archive programme of silent comedy at Watershed (16-20 Jan) and this is complemented by a classic comedy programme at Bristol Old Vic (18-20 Jan), with our guest curator Richard Herring programming a number of special events.

From classic Laurel & Hardy shorts accompanied by a live piano, to behind the scenes chats with Dad’s Army vicar, Frank Williams, and the creators of the Inbetweeners, it promises to be eclectic and sublime with something to appeal to everyone. And with 33 events over six days, this is our biggest Slapstick ever! The main festival (16-20 Jan) will be followed by two additional festival events just three weeks later at Bristol’s Hippodrome (10 Feb). But fear not, if you can’t attend the gala this year we have ‘Slapstick at the Cathedral’ on Weds 16 January which should more than satisfy any withdrawal symptoms experienced due to the gala having to be moved outside of the Festival weekend.

For this edition many of our ‘family’ of special guests are returning including: Bill Oddie, Graeme Garden, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Barry Cryer, Kevin Brownlow, David Robinson and Lucy Porter. We’re also excited to introduce brand new guests including:

Little & Large, Sally Phillips, Joe Thomas, Dad’s Army’s Frank Williams and veteran comedian Jimmy Cricket.

After 15 years it’s wonderful to still be here and to see there is more demand than ever for the Festival. 2018 broke attendance records with nearly 10,000 people enjoying our Slapstick programme.

And when it’s all over there is still the Silent Comedy Gala to look forward to on 10th February at Bristol Hippodrome, with a 40 piece orchestra and a rare live screening of Chaplin’s masterpiece MODERN TIMES. With CBeebies star Andy Day bringing his favourite clips to younger audiences for a matinée on the same day, 2019 is a breakthrough year for Slapstick Festival.

Finally, people may have known our Guest Liaison team leader: Martin Hammond. Sadly, Martin passed away suddenly just after the last festival. A familiar sight at the festival, Martin is an irreplaceable figure. He will be sorely missed and we would like to dedicate this edition of the festival to him. We’ll miss you Martin!

Chris Daniels, Director, Slapstick Festival

Slapstick is proud to present world-class live musical accompaniments for its silent film screenings, from solo piano improvisations to full orchestral scores and this year is no exception.

At our gala, Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936) will be accompanied by a 40-piece orchestra. Led by Roger Huckle they will be performing Chaplin’s own score conducted by Slapstick’s Musical Director, maestro Günter A. Buchwald. The unstoppable four-piece ensemble European Silent Screen Virtuosi (ESSV), in the form of Günter A. Buchwald (violin, piano), Frank Bockius (percussion), Romano Tedesco (double bass) and Marc Roos (trumpet), return to provide accompaniment for a series of special events this year including Sally Phillip’s Louise Brooks event at Bristol Old Vic, Harold Lloyd’s For Heaven’s Sake (1928) at Bristol Cathedral and Les Deux Timides (1928) at Watershed.

We are delighted to welcome back the world’s foremost silent film harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry, who’ll be accompanying a selection of short comedies for us on solo harp; pianist and composer Daan van den Hurk and our long-serving pianist John Sweeney, as well as ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue’ very own Colin Sell.

Chaplin: A King In New York (1957) With David Robinson WEDS 16 JAN 1050hrs Watershed £5.00 - £8.00 Dir: Charles Chaplin UK 110mins U To open the 15th edition of the Slapstick Festival… a talkie! Introduced by Chaplin biographer and critic, David Robinson, A King in New York is Chaplin’s take on 1950s America. Made during his exile from the country due to his leftist views, it stars Chaplin as a peaceable king who runs afoul of the House Un-American Activities Committee. Roberto Rossellini wisely called the work “the film of a free man.”

Keaton: Battling Butler (1926) WEDS 16 JAN 1330hrs Watershed £5.00 - £8.00 Dir: Buster Keaton US 74mins U

Keaton always selected Battling Butler (1926) as one of his favourite features. Based on the Broadway play, the story revolves around two Alfred Butlers – one (Keaton) a mild-mannered millionaire, the other a boxing world champion. When Butler-the-fop finds love with a mountain girl, he assumes the identity and arouses the wrath of Butler-the-Brute, leading to a dramatic showdown which inspired Scorsese’s filming of Raging Bull. Introduced here by film editor and PhD student of Keaton’s film-making, Polly Rose (University of Bristol). With live accompaniment by Günter A Buchwald and Frank Bockius.

Leading Women: Rediscovering Alice Howell THURS 17 JAN 0930hrs Watershed £5.00 - £8.00Stand-up comedian and writer Lucy Porter champions this rarely seen prolific performer who was a huge comedy star in the late teens and early 1920s. Howell was one of the few women permitted to be funny in her own right in the male-dominated world of silent screen comedy. Here, Lucy will introduce a selection of her funniest newly restored silent comedy shorts. Curated by Ben Model and Steve Massa with special thanks to the Library of Congress. With live piano accompaniment.

Leading Women: Mary Pickford: Little Annie Roonie (1925) THURS 17 Jan 1130hrs Watershed £5.00 - £8.00 Dir: William Beaudine US 94mins 12ACo-founder of two studios (Pickford-Fairbanks and United Artists), Academy Award winner Mary Pickford plays a tomboy of the tenements in this comedy-drama, which she also wrote. Shot entirely on set at the Pickford-Fairbanks Studio, the film co-stars William Haines and a wide-ranging, multi-ethnic cast. The film met with huge critical and commercial success upon its original release, proving fans and critics alike wanted the then 33-year old Mary to stay a child forever. Introduced by presenter and Pickford admirer, Chris Serle. With live piano accompaniment.

Leading Women: On the Trail of Cunégonde THURS 17 Jan 1400hrs Watershed £5.00 - £8.00

Around 1912-1913, the French company Société Lux produced comedies with the main character Cunégonde. The surviving films feature the same actress playing either an unruly maid, an annoying spinster or a ferocious wife (always called Cunégonde). The true identity of the actress playing Cunégonde has been a mystery for decades, until now… This presentation by Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi, Curator of Eye Filmmuseum, will include a screening of the surviving films along with what we now know about the actress. Discover this extraordinary story about a mysterious woman who was internationally acclaimed in her time but was then lost for more than a century. With live piano accompaniment from John Sweeney.

A panel discussion hosted by Andrew Kelly in conversation with Robin Ince and Lucy Porter. Following a screening of Chaplin’s THE PILGRIM (1923), the panel will explore whether ‘being funny’ is justification for mocking religion, or if there are some things comedy should not touch. In light of controversial comments on religion made in 2018 by Boris Johnson and subsequently by Rowan Atkinson, The Pilgrim tackles a subject that still resonates today. In partnership with Festival of Ideas.

Brought to you from the personal collection of film historian, Kevin Brownlow, who says: “I am very fond of HONEST HUTCH as it’s a lovely piece of Americana and I hope you will be, too.” Will Rogers is an acquired taste – slow, charming and amusing in his titles as well as his actions, he is well worth watching. This spectacular classic comedy gala is perfect for film and comedy fans of all ages.

Your host for the evening is comedian, actor and satirist Marcus Brigstocke. Highlights from the evening include a complete screening of Charlie Chaplin’s outstanding comedy masterpiece Modern Times (1936) on a vast HD screen, while Chaplin’s own acclaimed score is performed live by a 40-piece orchestra: Bristol Ensemble conducted by maestro Günter A. Buchwald. It features several of the most celebrated sequences in comic cinema. The score, by Chaplin himself, is performed in a restored version and includes a romantic theme that would be made famous through the hit song “Smile”.

Plus short comedies from Laurel & Hardy and Buster Keaton, both with live musical accompaniment, additional entertainment from the brilliant comedian magician John Archer and live pre-show entertainment in the foyer from Circomedia. It all makes for a truly thrill-packed evening not to be missed.
