Our heartfelt thanks go to the Loreto College community for your most generous support. It is most humbling and at the same time truly inspiring to witness the generosity and compassion shown by your school to the people of North East Japan. We are certain that the people of Japan will be most encouraged by your compassion as they endeavour to rebuild their devastated communities. We are deeply moved and once again thank you for your generosity. It is reassuring to know that the relationship and friendship between Australia and Japan is in safe hands with the future generation of young Australians. Sincerely yours Junzo Fujita, Consul-General of Japan CONDOLENCES We pray with heartfelt sympathies for the family of Lauren Williams (Year 11) whose Grandmother and Grandfather

passed away, on Sunday and Monday respectively. To lose them both, so close together, is very sad for the family. May they both rest peacefully in God’s eternal care. Amen.

To Maddie Stegman (Year 12) whose Grandmother in Canada passed away on the weekend. May she rest in eternal

peace. Our prayers and sympathies are with Maddie and her family. To Mrs Muriel McLean, member of our tuckshop team, whose Father passed away in Cairns last week. We hold Mrs

McLean and her family in our hearts and prayers at this time of loss and sadness. To Ashleigh Mullins (Year 10) whose Grandfather passed away last Thursday. May he rest in God’s loving peace. Our

prayers and sympathies are with Ashleigh and her family.

Yours sincerely

Explore the Field of Dentistry Workshop The Australian Dental Association (Queensland Branch) is conducting a four day Explore the Field of Dentistry Workshop aimed at school aged students interested in pursuing a career within the dental sector. The Workshop is designed to ensure that those attracted to a career in dentistry have some understanding of the type of work involved. Overall, the workshop is designed to offer students a complete learning experience including preparation of the dental surgery for operation, applying personal protective equipment, basic infection control procedures, reprocessing of instruments, viewing footage of real dental procedures, and employability and resume writing skills. Students are also provided the opportunity to operate and handle sensitive dental equipment and materials in a safe learning environment. The workshop will be held in the first week of the September school holidays. Information relating to the course can be access directly from www.adaq.com.au.

English Department Michael Bauer has been Writer-in-Residence for four days last week for the Year 11 English students. He gave a speech to the whole year

level on Monday on the elements of writing a short story. As a successful writer of fiction, his insights were very valuable. The girls have

responded to his assistance in individual tutorials very positively as they drafted their own stories based on an area of Brisbane. The ideas

for their stories have come from the Literary Tours conducted at the beginning of the term. We look forward to reading the stories as they

are being drafted and finalised. Mrs Catherine O’Donoghue - English Coordinator

Geography News

On these picture- perfect, blue sky winter days, what else could possibly be better than spending the day on the Gold Coast; Coolangatta to

be precise? That is where the Year 9 Geography classes were lucky enough to be on Thursday 5th August 2011, to complete their field work

on Sustainable Tourism Development in the region. Between gathering evidence via observations, field sketching, surveying and photo

taking, the students were also treated to a very informative talk on the economic development of the

area by Mr Jim Wilson, General Manager of “Connecting Southern Gold Coast”, an arm of the Gold

Coast City Council. This talk was held at the newly renovated Kirra Hill Community and Cultural Centre

which itself has the most impressive views of the whole of the Gold Coast. Special thanks must go to

Mr Wilson, Ms Gallen, our Year Nine Coordinator, the Year Nine Geography Teachers, Mr Kemp, Mrs

Dowling, Mrs Hereth and Mrs McInnes, and finally to teacher assistants, Mrs Meg Runge and Mrs Lee

Withall who were all a wonderful help on the day. I think it is safe to say that a successful and fun day

of learning was had by all. Mrs Diane Hanson - Geography Coordinator

Music News Transport Arrangements for QCMF (Thursday / Friday)

Could all students and parents please take note of the following important and extra-ordinary arrangements for QCMF performances on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 August:

Guitar Ensemble Two: As you are required to arrive at Villanova at 4pm on Thursday, the College has booked a coach for this

trip. Guitar Ensemble Two students should meet in room 702 directly after afternoon homeroom. In addition to your instrument and music, you will need to take your school bag with you to Villanova. The school WILL NOT be organising return transport; it will be each parent’s responsibility to ensure their daughters are collected after the performance.

Concert Band One: Rehearsal will finish at 4:30 pm on Thursday 18 August so that Exit Stage Left students can make it to Villanova in

time for their performance.

Exit Stage Left: Members of this group should arrive at Villanova by 5:05 pm. Students who are also in Concert Band One are expected to

attend rehearsal until 4:30pm. The College has not organised any transport for Exit Stage Left students, however, if there are any difficulties with making it from Concert Band, please contact the Music Department and we can work something out.

Sorelle and Guitar Ensemble One: as these performances are later in the evening, we expect that students / parents will be able to

make their own transport arrangements.

Senior Choir: As your QCMF performance is during the school day on Friday, we have booked a coach to take you to Villanova and return

you to Loreto after the section. Parents please be aware that the return time may be just after 3:20pm and this could affect your daughter’s transport arrangements for getting home. Senior Choir students should meet in room 704 by 1 PM on Friday 19 August WITH THEIR SCHOOL BAGS. On your return from Villanova, you will be able to collect bags and go straight home.

Concert Band One: As this performance is later in the evening, we expect that students / parents will be able to make their own

transport arrangements.

Music Camp All members of Concert Band One are reminded that our last major commitment for Term Three will be a performance at the Primary Music Camp concert at 2:30 pm Sunday 28 August. We would also like to ask all members of the String Ensemble to perform at this concert. Some senior members of each group will be invited to attend earlier in the day to act as section leaders and tutors. This camp is an important service that Loreto provides to local primary schools and they are always very appreciative that our students make such an effort to help them learn music and give them the opportunity to hear advanced groups performing.

Parent Helpers For the past 20 years, Villanova has run the Catholic Colleges Music Festival as a service to the Catholic community in Queensland. It is now a huge event that runs for four days (Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 August). This is a massive undertaking that relies on the help of a huge number of Villanova parents, students and past pupils. There is now a way we can help! Any Loreto parents or senior students who would be willing to assist by signing up for a 3 hour shift over the weekend can do so via the Villanova website (http://www.vnc.qld.edu.au/Music/events.htm). You can choose the sort of job you would like to do and also the venue. Now that our performance schedule has been in the newsletter, it is easy to sign up for a shift directly before or after one of your daughter’s performances. There will always be experienced people on all shifts who can help make the job very easy – it would be great if the Loreto Community was able to support this important event in our calendar!

Parents information re QCMF Attached to this newsletter is a very informative brochure QCMF have supplied for parents, explaining procedures to make sure you get the most out of your daughter’s QCMF performance. It contains information on such things as ticket prices, parking, arrival times & venue rules so that you don’t accidently miss performances. I would ask that all parents carefully read this information before next weekend’s event.

All Choirs

At the end of each year, Villanova College runs a big themed event that features professional guest soloists such as James Morrison, the Grigoryan Brothers etc. This year the event will have a Broadway theme and feature singers Rachel Beck (Australian productions of “Les Miserable”, “Singing in the Rain”, “The Sound of Music” and “Beauty and the Beast”, TVs “It Takes Two”) and Ian Stenlake (“Guys and Dolls”, “The Pajama Game”, “Sleeping Beauty”, Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight, TVs “Stingers” and “Sea Patrol”). Villanova have invited members of Loreto’s Senior Choir to participate in a combined choir for this event. Rehearsals will be held initially at Loreto on Tuesday afternoons at our normal rehearsal time. Final rehearsals will then be held at Villanova all day on Monday 17 October (student free Panel Day) with the concerts on the evenings of Thursday 20 October and Friday 21 October. Senior Choir students in Years 10-12 who would like to participate, and who are able to commit to all these dates, are invited to become involved and initially just need to keep attending their regular Tuesday rehearsals. These performances will then become your end of year concert for 2011. All singers in Years 8 and 9, and students in the older grades who can’t commit to the Broadway Concert schedule, will be invited to join a Massed Choir, rehearsing on

Thursday mornings before school, to prepare repertoire for the Music Night on Friday 28 October. Ben Lanford - Director of Music

Research Project - Coping with Emotional Problems Researchers at Monash University and the University of Queensland will be conducting phase two of the three year research project,

entitled coping with emotional problems, which started last year at Loreto. This research project will investigate the emotional health and

well-being of Australian adolescents and inform prevention and early intervention programs designed to enhance the quality of life of

Australian adolescents.

We would like to take this opportunity to inform parents who gave consent for their child to participate in this project last year that the

researchers will be coming to the school shortly to administer the same questionnaire completed by these students last year. Only students

with parent consent at time one of the study will be allowed to complete the questionnaire this year, during school hours, with other

participating children from their school. Please contact your school if you wish to look though a copy of the questionnaire.

To thank your children for their participation so far, we would also like to offer participating children from each school the chance to win a

$25 JB Hi-Fi gift voucher or 1 of 5 iPod shuffles. One voucher will be available to win at each school and will be randomly awarded on the day

the questionnaire is administered.

If you would like more information or would like to withdraw your child from the project, please do not hesitate to contact the researcher

responsible for this project. The researcher is: Ms Tori Andrews, Ph: 07 3365 5149 email: [email protected] We look forward to

working with you and your child. Thank you.

Science DepartmentNews Positions are still available for The Science Experience. It is a three day hands on science activities program being conducted by UQ, Griffith and QUT in late 2011/early 2012. It is open to students who are currently in Years 9 and 10. The program is designed to help students to make decisions about senior secondary and tertiary studies if they have an interest in the Sciences. It is also a great opportunity to gain an insight into uni life and meet like-minded students from all over Australia. If your daughter is interested, she can visit www.scienceexperience.com.au or see me at the College. This week is National Science Week, so we are putting our own Loreto spin on things by holding “Sleek Geek Week”. There will be many

lunchtime activities over the next few days including sticky, glittery slime, making sherbet, zapping things with thousands of volts of

electricity and big explosions. All staff and students are welcome and each day’s activities will be advertised in morning notices.

Our Year 10s are currently going through the process of subject selection for their senior schooling. They will be attending various

information sessions in their PD classes and there is also a parent information night next week to assist in decision making. I would certainly

encourage your daughter to talk to her Science Teacher or myself if she has any queries about the opportunities offered by our senior sci-

ence program. I am also contactable at the College at any time if you have any questions about the Science subjects offered in Years 11 and

12 at Loreto. Matt Lourigan - Science Coordinator [email protected]

Student Laptop Program

On Monday 15 August, details regarding the student laptop program were outlined in a well-attended meeting held in the Mary Ward

Centre. A brief summary of the information that was outlined is below.

The education of our students needs to reflect the dominant method of information flow used in society. Young people are in the middle of the digital information revolution and teaching and learning needs to reflect this otherwise we risk not providing a relevant and contemporary education. We are now living in a world where technology is getting faster and cheaper and is fundamentally changing the world in which we live and work. However, technology itself is a tool and the process of learning needs to be at the centre of any pedagogical changes. The incorporation of ICT into subject areas needs to enhance student learning not replace types of student learning.

Page 7: 16 August 2011

How is Loreto College addressing these needs?

1. Planning

Extensive planning has been undertaken over the past couple of years, primarily by the College ICT Steering Committee. This committee has a broad based membership comprising administration, teachers, financial and technical staff. It is an advisory committee that recommends certain courses of action to the College administration team. The members of this committee have undertaken many visits to other schools as well as attending workshops and conferences to gather as much relevant information as possible. We believe through this extensive research we are able to make the best possible educational decision for the students of Loreto College.

2. Preparation

The preparation phase has included a mix of professional development for staff as well as significant reviews and upgrades of College infrastructure. Staff at Loreto College have all had HP 2740p PC Tablets since January 2010 and have received extensive professional development in their use in an educational context. This support has been ongoing and many teachers have availed themselves of training opportunities. This training has taken the form of either using external providers or having Loreto staff acting as mentors usually for teachers in their own department.

On the technical front, this year we have undertaken extensive independent reviews of our wired and wireless network. The recommendations from these reviews will be implemented before the student laptop rollout occurs in Term 2, 2012. This will ensure that we maximise the speed of our network so that our teachers and students can use all of the resources available to them. We are also presently reviewing our broadband internet connection and have plans to upgrade to a 100Mbps fibre connection next year. On the software front we have already this year installed a new email system and internet filtering software called Netbox Blue. We are presently rolling out a new student administration package and incorporated in this will be a new Learning Management System called EduKate. Edukate will be the primary way in which resources are made available between teachers and students. Both of these systems will be operational in Term 1, 2012.

3. Implementation

The implementation phase of the program will begin with Year 8 students at the beginning of Term 2 2012 and then continue with Year 10 students at the beginning of Term 3 also in 2012. In Term 1 of 2013 devices will be rolled out to Year 8 and Year 10 giving all students from Years 8 to 11 their own laptop to use at school and at home. At the same time we acknowledge that we do not want Year 12 to be left out and it is our intention to package up the best 140 laptops from our present stock (320) and to give them to Year 12 students in 2013 to use both at school and at home.

At the moment Year 8 students starting in 2012 will receive the Acer 1830t Notebook. This notebook is a very capable machine which is ultraportable, lightweight with a battery life of 7 hours. They would have this laptop until January 2014 and then would receive a HP Tablet once they start Year 10.

The computer chosen for the Year 10 students will be the HP 2760p PC Tablet similar to the machines the Loreto staff presently have. PC Tablets are an extremely powerful and flexible tool for students to use as they combine the reliability of a high-end laptop with the pen and touch capabilities of a tablet. The HP 2760p is a rugged and reliable machine ideal for the advanced use required of contemporary Year 10 to 12 students. Tablet PCs:

Allows for handwriting skills to be used

Easy annotation of digital resources

Excellent for mathematics, science , art and languages

When in tablet mode it sits flat so that it less intrusive in a group

Best of both worlds a laptop + tablet

Also included in the rollout:

All software (Windows 7 professional, Microsoft Office Professional, Adobe Creative Suite, Sibelius 6, virus protection, Netbox Blue, Clickview + more

Past Pupil Achievements—Where are they now Loreto girls strive for excellence through the qualities of freedom, justice, sincerity, verity and felicity. The past pupils featured in

our first edition of „Where are they now‟ are prime ambassadors of these virtues and of seeking truth and doing justice.

It is inspiring to see the values of Mary Ward that Maddy and Aislinn are sharing throughout their travels. Loreto will be

organising a fundraising initiative for Heart Kids and the Faraja Young Women‟s Development Centre. Please contact the

College for donation details. Fundraising events will be held throughout Term 3 to raise money for the women of Tanzania.

Watch this space and please get involved!

If you know of any inspirational stories involving a Loreto girl please contact the College and/or the Past Pupils‟ Association on

3394 9999. We look forward to profiling more of our conscientious past pupils. Please see the next edition of “The Chronicle” for

the full versions of Maddy and Aislinn‟s amazing stories.

Maddy Evans - Class of 2008 The extreme challenge of a lifetime has given Maddy Evans the determination to achieve whatever she puts her strengthened heart to. Maddy recently returned from Papua New Guinea after completing the gruelling Kokoda trail with her sister Grace (06) and their father, Barry; over a period of eight days and seven nights. What makes Maddy‟s adventure unique is that almost 21 years ago she was born with the birth defect transposition of the great arteries (TGA), a condition which causes infants to turn blue from lack of oxygen due to the defect in the large arteries of the heart. With great strength and determination Maddy accepted the Kokoda challenge and proceeded to raise funds for the Heart Kids Foundation. Heart Kids provides funding for research and supports families affected by childhood heart disease. Following two months of arduous training, Maddy was given the all clear by her cardiologist to participate in the 96km trek. Maddy described her experience as a rite of passage saying the trek should be mandatory for all young Australians. “I was trying to picture what the Australian soldiers would have gone through; carrying heavy equipment, starving and being shot at.” “The experience gave me a greater appreciation of what our soldiers went through and their determination.” “I remember thinking that I wasn‟t going to make it through the two longest days but I did and I gained a greater maturity and understanding of Australian history through completing the trek.” Thanks to the support of friends and family Maddy has raised $1200 for Heart Kids and hopes to close donations by the end of the week so she can give the money to the not-for-profit charity. “Heart Kids is a great foundation and I want to give a little bit back to the people who supported my family during our time of need and to also help families who are now going through what we went through 20 years ago.”

Aislinn Healy - Class of 2010 Recent Loreto graduate Aislinn Healy is currently working with Projects Abroad as a volunteer in Arusha, Tanzania. Aislinn is based at the Faraja Young Women‟s Development Centre for six months and teaches English and computing (when electricity exists) to approximately 20 girls. Each year, the centre houses 56 young women from trafficking, abuse or poverty backgrounds and these girls are taught English, cookery and sewing. Aislinn said the aim of the centre is to equip the girls with the skills necessary to get a job at a hotel or enable them to be self-employed and make goods they can sell. “My dream is to find them sponsors so they may go to school and work as teachers or doctors.” “The girls are beautiful, kind and generous and surprisingly bright and cheerful, considering their pasts. I do my best to teach them what I can, but it is difficult.” The centre also accommodates 26 children, most under the age of two. These children are in desperate need of nappies, warm clothing and shoes. “The days are long and tiresome, but I wouldn‟t be anywhere else in the world! I have fallen in love with the children, their mothers and the girls with their easy smiles and sweet laughter. Their attitude inspires me and gives me strength.” “I hope we can learn from each other and continue to form friendships that will overcome any hardships faced by each of us.”

“I am having the time of my life and know that I want to spend the rest of my life helping the people of Tanzania. I really believe that education is the key to overcoming poverty and developing or supporting schools is the best way that we can help.”
