    How great is your

    goodness, which you

    have stored up for those

    who fear you, which you

bestow in the sight of men

    on those who take refuge

    in you. Psalm 31:19

    parent interviews to discuss

    your childs progress.

    We are also encouraging

    the students to attend these

    interviews as a three way

    discussion, so they hear rst

hand what the staff and the

    parents are discussing about

    their success and areas that

    need development.

We are looking at applying a

    series of criteria to students

for them to be selected for

and maintain their place in the

    Advanced Academic Classes.

The purpose of this is to

    further extend and develop

    them as they move through

    the College, in preparation for

    the signicant workload that

they will encounter in Years 11

and 12. Some of the criteria

    that we are considering are

    setting specic benchmarks

for them as grades and then

    different work that they will

    need to complete. This

    will provide a competitive

    entry for students who can

    demonstrate, through a

    series of testing procedures,

what work they need to keep

up with to stay in the class.

Some examples might beif you are studying English

    as an Advanced Class then

you would have to read and

    critique a selection of literature

    wsuch as novels, poetry and

short stories. If they are in the

    Science Advanced Class then

it might be a series of thinking

skills in the science area and

    completion of a number of

    tournaments in Science.

The purpose of this is to

    challenge the students to

    extend themselves, getting

    them ready for the future

they are striving toward. As parents of children who

might not be in the Advanced

    Academic programme, this

does not mean that we are not

    teaching them to their point

of need, rather we are scaling

    the academic programme to

    meet the students needs.

    Over the years we have

    developed a very thorough

    understanding of the

    range and capabilities of

    the students, however, we

    are wanting to explore the

    strengthening of the Advanced

    programme, not with more

work, but rather to extend the

    students. We would welcome

    your comments in this matter

and these can be forwarded to

the Head of the Senior School

    Mr Gerhard May [email protected].

    Mr M Lewis

    Principal

    The Executive team have

    been discussing the success

    and relevance of streaming

    in the College and what

    the Advanced Academic

    program is achieving as

    an overarching construct.

    We receive feedback from

    parents asking why we only

    have two advanced classes

in each grade and why, as a

College, there is not a scope

to move beyond the traditionaladvanced program and have

    a third class.

    When many of us were

    attending school we

    remember that all grades

    were streamed; for example

in my Year 9 group there

    were eight classes from 9.1

to 9.8. All of the students

knew what that meant and the

    work was different between

    9.1 to 9.5 to 9.8. We didnt

have two 9.1s or three 9.3s.

    The differentiated work from

a group in 9.1 to 9.2 was not

    signicant, although from 9.1

to 9.5 there was a difference

    that was notable.

    As parents we want our

    children to attain the level

at which they are capable.Sometimes it is very difcult

    to understand what they are

    actually capable of and we

    encourage you to attend

    Advanced Academic Program

    NAPLAN Testing forYears 3, 5, 7 and 9

The tests are scheduled for the mornings of Tuesday 15 May,

Wednesday 16 May and Thursday 17 May 2012. All schools

across Australia must complete the tests on the same days.

NAPLAN provides information about student performance in

relation to nationally agreed prociency bands and benchmarks.

It assists our teachers in placing students in the correct ability

grouping for numeracy and literacy. In Senior School NAPLAN

is one of the indicators used in placing students in the correct

core classes in Years 8 and 10 and for determining senior

courses of suitable difculty in the Year 11 subject selection

    process.

It is very important that we recognise the signicance of the

NAPLAN tests. Full information has been sent home with the

students who will be involved in NAPLAN testing this year.

    PERTUSSIS (WHOOPING COUGH)

    Dear Parent

A case of pertussis (whooping cough) in the children attending Swan Christian College has been notified tothe Department of Health.

Even though your child/children may be fully vaccinated, it would be prudent to watch out for the symptoms

    of pertussis in your child.

What is pertussis?Pertussis is a disease caused by infection of the throat with the bacteria Bordetella pertussis. What are the symptoms?

Usually begins just like a cold, with a runny nose, tiredness and sometimes a mild fever Coughing then develops, usually in bouts, followed by a deep gasp or whoop in infants.

    Sometimes people vomit after coughing

Pertussis can be very serious in small children. They might go blue or stop breathing duringcoughing attacks and may need to go to hospital.

Older children and adults may have a less serious illness, with bouts of coughing that continue formany weeks regardless of treatment

How is it spread ?Pertussis is spread to other people by droplets from coughing and sneezing. Untreated, a person withpertussis can spread it to other people for up to 3 weeks after onset of cough. With appropriate antibiotic treatment the infectious period is reduced to 5 days.Time between exposure and getting sick is usually 7 10 days, but can take up to 3 weeks.

Who is at risk ? Anyone can get pertussis

People living in the same household as someone with pertussis are more likely to catch it

Immunisation greatly reduces the risk of infection, but reinfection can occurHow is it prevented?Vaccination is the most important way of reducing pertussis in our community.

Further information is available on our website www.public.health.wa.gov.au > click on A-Z topics &diseases, then P for Pertussis.

The Cross Walk After SchoolThe policy of the Junior School has been to ensure adults escort students from the Junior School grounds. In the case of Kindergarten

and Pre Primary, parents are asked to meet children at the classroom door for safe handover.

    In Years One to Six, students are asked to wait at one of three places;

    1. The drive through-drop zone at the front of the Junior School reception area.

    2. One of the two bus escort areas where teachers are waiting to safely escort children across the school grounds to the bus stops.

    3. In the case of younger brothers and sisters moving to the Senior School to meet up with siblings, they are asked to meet with the

children catching the bus then walk with teachers and cross the road together.

Due to the busyness of the car park area and the main circuit road at the front of the College, children are not allowed to cross the

crosswalk without an adult, a parent or an older family member, who may be a student of the Senior School.

Please help us to protect the children in our care and support the teachers, as they remind children of the safety rules for leaving the

    school grounds.

    Year 3G Assembly

The Good SamaritanThis term we have been learning all about our beautiful country

Australia. In particular we have been learning about different

native Australian animals. The children researched a chosen

animal and then presented the information on a poster.

During our bible lessons we have been learning about parables

that Jesus told. We learnt that a parable is an earthly story with

a heavenly meaning. For our assembly last week we presented

a play called The Good Samaritan. In Luke Chapter 10 a

Jewish teacher stood up to test Jesus and asked him Who is

my neighbour? To answer his question Jesus told a story about

a man from Samaria, a people the Jews hated. Our play was

based on the story that Jesus told about the Good Samaritan

and the importance of being a good neighbour.

Making the props, dressing up and rehearsing has all been great

fun and we hope everyone enjoyed our assembly as much as

    we enjoyed presenting it.

    Year 3G Teacher

Term 1 ArtThis term students have been learning a range of skills such as

using different media and how to use them to achieve a variety

of effects. We have focused on the works of Monet looking at

the quick and short brushstrokes and the way he blends colours.

These ower drawings were done using oil pastels and dying the

background. We focused on blending colours and experimenting

with different colour combinations. Art Club this term has just

started a portrait study. They are learning how to divide the face

into sections so that they can draw a well proportioned face.

    Miss A Bough

    Art Teacher

Year 4B HistoryIn History we recently studied the way that early Aboriginals

lived in Australia. The Noongar people followed six different

seasons during a year; this determined where they lived and

what they ate. We created a display in our classroom so

please come and have a look if you get a chance.

    Impact Leadership

ConferenceOn Tuesday 13 March the Year 6 Student Captains went to thePerth Convention Centre for the Impact Leadership Conference.

When we arrived at the centre we went through to the Ballroom

and sat down. The conference started with some introduction

activities and then moved on to the School Bus Leadership

Principles. It was demonstrated that the bus key represents

taking opportunities, the passengers represent impact to others,

the wheels represent moving forward, the rear view mirrors

represent being observant and the steering wheel represents

setting goals. Once the School Bus Leadership Principles had

nished we had some morning tea and started the Lead likea Strawberry Leader not like a Watermelon Leader exercise.

For example; a Watermelon Leader is someone who appears

very different from who they are on the inside and a Strawberry

Leader is someone who is the same on the inside as how they

act and speak on the outside. We also learnt how to be a berry

good leader. Once we had learnt how to motivate others the

conference nished. By the end of the day we had all learnt a

    lot about being better leaders.

Oral Presentations GaloreThis week in both Mrs Spurgeons Year 8 Standard and Advanced English classes the students have been presenting their Biography

Report on a famous person. Students expressed their reluctance and nervousness to standing before their peers in this daunting arena. However with bravery and hearts autter they stood tall with shaky hands and lifted their voices with condence. The reports ranged from

famous singers, movie stars, super athletes, inspirational inventors, to Australias own super heroes.

As a class we were informed and entertained by the many ways students gave their presentations. Students used PowerPoint, poster

displays and some even bribed their audience with lollies. As each orator closed their presentations they were applauded by their

classmates. The student themselves felt relieved that the experience was over yet proud they had overcome their own mental battles.

    Congratulations to all!

LanguagesLanguage is best learned in short, frequent sessions. This

is the message that the Language Department has been

promoting here at Swan. There are many ways that students

are able to have time in their busy days to practise their

language skills. From using Language Perfect, an on-line

learning program to which each student who studies languages

at Swan are subscribed, using free apps, reading class

notes, to reviewing vocabulary from word cards. There are

a multitude of ways to nd the ve minutes per day that is

    recommended.

To this end all Year 7 students have been given a laminated

tablemat with French on one side and Japanese on the other. The tablemat allows the student to rehearse learned language

while eating an afternoon snack and without having to open

It is the hope of the Language Department that parents would

not only permit the tablemats to remain on the table but that

they, too, would become involved in encouraging the students

    to practise their languages.

Noongar IncursionOn Friday 9 March the Year 7 students participated in an incursion

with the Noongar people. Mr James Spurgeon talked to the class

about how they survived and lived. Mr Spurgeon talked about how

the Noongar people rely on the environment to get food sources

and to make everyday things. Some of our everyday items like

toilet paper could be made out of different materials found in the

    bush.

Set aside regular study time for English

This is critical. Because there is not a lot of content in English

that you need to learn, the temptation is to spend your allocated

English time on other subjects where the results of your study

    are more obvious.

The study of English is primarily about developing your reading,

writing, viewing and oral skills; these NEED regular practice

in order to be developed. The rewards are not immediately

apparent, but without regular application you will not reach yourpotential in this subject. What follows is a list of things you can

    do during that study time.

Start a vocabulary list with your own denitions

Start a journal of your learning in English

    Repair spelling and grammatical errors

    Practise your writing

    Read more widely

    Practise your oral presentations

Study summaries of texts for exams

Revise checklists of conventions and techniques used in

    texts

If you feel unmotivated because you are not learning anything

new in English, but simply writing more essay-like responses

which you were already taught how to write, more or less, back

in Year 8 well, consider this: you also rst learnt to relate

to the opposite sex in a different way back in Year 8, more or

less. Are you still giggling and running off to the bathroom or

swaggering around making grunting noises? Well, your essays,

like your relating to the opposite sex, need maturing. Like agood cheese, matured writing takes time and the working of

the applicable culture, that is, doing the things listed above to

    develop depth and breadth.

Language (English) is the God-given primary medium for

communication, thinking, creativity and enjoyment. It is

the medium in which God reveals himself and we shape

understandings of ourselves and our world. Your skill in English

determines the level of access you have to knowledge and your

ability to engage with life and society at a meaningful level. The

    study of English is worthwhile.
