The Calling: Authentic Stewardship Speaker: Kevin F. Brennan, CPA, FHFMA, Executive Vice President of Finance and CFO, Geisinger Health

Finance professionals are comfortable with their traditional role as resource stewards. Today’s healthcare industry, however, calls us to become stewards of lives and relationships as well. Whether seeding innovation, experimenting with new payment models, or forging new collaborative partnerships, we are met each day with the challenge to reimagine and transform what we know into what our patients and communities need and deserve. Success requires a commitment to being difference makers and to leveraging the Power of One to impact many. This presentation will explore these issues and encourage you to shoot for the “sweet spot”─that place where passion meets purpose.

Private Equity Company Colleen Costello, President, Vital Vio Laura Seeff, M.D., Director of CDC’s Office of Health System Collaboration, Office of the Associate Director

for Policy

Health care has become an increasingly challenging issue to address both nationally and locally. There have been various efforts to address how to improve coverage, pay for pre-existing conditions and to control cost. There is little question that the United States has been able to extend life – but with this has come a dramatic increase in the cost of health care as a percentage of the gross national product. Population health initiatives coupled with technological innovation are aimed at decreasing health care cost while improving patient outcomes – but initiatives and innovation cost money! How do we go from proof of concept to adoption and how is the decision to invest in programs and technology made? If there is a benefit, how should that benefit be shared among the providers, payers and other stakeholders?

3:30 – 4:15 PM Networking Break and Vendor Fair

Whether there’s another cut to the Medicare or Medicaid program, another compliance issue, issues with collections, increasing insurance denials, credit concerns, shortages of caregivers driving personnel costs, quality issues affecting payments, another audit, demands from physicians and administrators for additional resources, or information technology upgrades…there never is a boring day in the life of a Health System CFO. This panel will discuss the daily trials and tribulations of a CFO, how they prioritize, what’s important to them and their organization, and how they are able to limit the stress on themselves and the organization’s finances.

The pace of consolidation has reached new heights in the Metro NY Area. Local hospitals have been thrust into the decision making process as to whether to consolidate and, if so, with who. This panel brings together four viewpoints - one from a major Nassau County facility whose strategy took them to partnership with a major NYC provider, a Suffolk County provider who chose to partner with a major Nassau County provider and Brooklyn and Queens providers whose current thoughts are to remain independent.
