MAP APPRAISALS BY OLD WORLD AUCTIONS | 10:00 am–NoonExperts from Old World Auctions, specialists in antique maps from the 15th through 19th centuries, will provide free map evaluations, including information on authenticity, an estimate of value, and an assessment of condition. Old World Auctions will provide verbal evaluations, not written appraisals. Due to time constraints, participants are limited to one map evaluation each.

DR. STEPHEN J. HORNSBYPicturing America: The Golden Age of Pictorial MapsStephen Hornsby is the director of the Canadian-American Center and a professor of geography and Canadian studies at the University of Maine. His research centers on historical geography and American cartography in the early 20th century. Hornsby holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia and a master’s degree from the University of St. Andrews. His most recent book, Picturing America: The Golden Age of American Pictorial Maps, outlines the development of this cartographic form, highlights several pictorial map artists, describes the process of creating a pictorial map, and discusses the significance of the form to the history of American cartography.

ELIANE DOTSONPutting the “Art” Back in Cartography & Map AppraisalsEliane Dotson is owner of Old World Auctions, president of the Washington Map Society, and a Steering Committee member of the Fry-Jefferson Map Society. Colorful, decorative, and often edgy, pictorial maps are the new darling of the collectible map market. Often more aesthetic than cartographic in nature, pictorial maps focus on telling a story rather than depicting geographical accuracy. This talk will review the various types of pictorial maps and what makes them so collectible. Learn how to incorporate pictorial maps into your current collection or how to start a collection from scratch. Discover where to find pictorial maps, how to research them, and how to determine their worth.

CASSANDRA BRITT FARRELLExploring Maps in DigiTool WorkshopCassandra Britt Farrell, the senior map archivist in the Library’s Manuscripts and Special Collections Department, specializes in maps of Virginia and colonial American history. She has worked as an adjunct instructor for Thomas Nelson Community College and as a historical interpreter for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest. Farrell received an MA in history from Old Dominion University. This workshop will guide users to the Library’s map collection in the Library of Virginia’s Virginia Memory portal. Time will be spent reviewing the different types of maps and collections available online for map researchers, students, etc.
