16th NEW ZEALAND
PHILATELIC LITERATURE
EXHIBITION
2019
Hosted by the
Christchurch (NZ) Philatelic Society Inc
28 September, 2019
Philatelic Centre, Christchurch, New Zealand
INTRODUCTION
Following on from what was deemed to be a successful 15th New Zealand National Philatelic Literature Exhibition in 2017, the Christ-church (NZ) Philatelic Society (CPS) applied for and was granted
authority from the New Zealand Philatelic Federation to host this 16th edition of our national specialist literature exhibition. Previous exhibitions had been mainly organised by the Central Districts
Philatelic Trust.
The CPS was founded in 1911 and has been an active society since that time. For many years it has seen both it’s library facility and it’s
monthly newsletter “Captain Coqk” as key assets in providing a service for it’s members. To therefore be involved in the specialist literature exhibition is but a small extension of where our efforts are
concentrated.
The CPS is a shareholder in the ownership of the Philatelic Centre in Christchurch which gives us a significant permanent space for our
extensive library which includes not only catalogues, monographs, and periodicals, but the research archives of a number of well known New
Zealand philatelists.
The CPS team that worked to organise this event was; The Judges group were: Paul van Herpt, Chairman Jeff Long, Chairman Murray Clark, Secretary Dr Ross Marshall Karen Jeffrey, Treasurer Alan Tunnicliffe Jeff Long, Jury Chairman John Campbell, Apprentice assisted by the Executive Murray Clark, Secretary committee of the CPS
The team’s efforts were well supported by the considerable
number of philatelic colleagues from around the world who so
willingly submitted their entries which in many cases was at some
cost to get to New Zealand. On behalf of our team we would like
to say a BIG THANK YOU to all the exhibitors who made this
event a success.
FOREWORD
From the day we decide just collecting stamps is not enough, we
embark on a journey where we seek a greater knowledge of those
small printed items we have in an album. In that journey we spend
our time looking for information on production, recorded varieties,
design, history, and a raft of associated topics.
This specialised philatelic literature exhibition is therefore to cele-
brate the efforts of those who publish their study and research into
readable and understandable formats that the rest of us can use. It
is not every stamp collector who can produce a monograph or
catalogue, but most do appreciate being able to find the
information that is the result of these efforts.
This is the 16th such specific literature exhibition held here in New
Zealand. It brings a wide range of diverse works to the attention of
the New Zealand philatelic community which we as organisers
trust will bring mutual benefit to both collectors and publishers.
Early next year all entries will also be displayed at NZ2020, a FIAP
international exhibition being held in Auckland which will give fur-
ther attention to these works.
All that is left to say is a thank you to all our participants, congratu-
lations on the awards and prizes gained, and also many thanks to
our sponsors for their contributions.
Paul van Herpt, Chairman
Thanks to our Sponsors for their support;
- Classic Stamps Ltd, for our prizes
- NZ Post Ltd, for sending parcels to judges
- NZ National Philatelic Trust, for assistance with
costs

JURY REPORT
This was another successful exhibition from the viewpoint of the
competitive exhibits, with 69 entries across all classes.
Two aspects were particularly pleasing: the entrants who had entered for the first time, and the quality of the exhibits overall. The fact that several Large Gold and Gold medals were awarded is testament to this. Entrants need to remember that this was a national-level exhibi-tion, so the points needed to attain any medal level are 5 points below that at international level.
The members of the Jury have worked hard to arrive at what is con-sidered to be the fairest result for each exhibitor. Here in NZ we take over a month to send boxes of material to the judges, who are scat-tered around the country, so each entry can be carefully considered. After this, the judges have a two day get-together to finalise marks and comments, which enables us to provide written critiques. We hope entrants will find the comments helpful and interesting.
This year, we again considered electronic entries, including websites, and have further developed a judging sheet which contains a number of points for consideration when judging these entries. We hope en-trants will find this helpful.
Several entries were not primarily written in English, so these were treated as display entries, and all will also be on display at the NZ2020 FIAP exhibition in Auckland March 19-22 next year.
The Jury was made up myself, Dr Ross Marshall, Alan Tunnicliffe,
and John Campbell (apprentice).
All entries were on display at the Literature Exhibition in Christchurch,
NZ, on September 28, and will be forwarded to the NZ2020 FIAP ex-
hibition in Auckland next year, either as competitive entries (if the en-
trants formally enter their exhibit) or on display. The material then be-
comes part of the Christchurch (NZ) Philatelic Society library, which is
available for anyone to view.
The Best in Class entries were:
