THE MERCY, POWER, AND LOVE OF GOD The first reading today, from the book of Wisdom, makes its point over and over, at least five times in five verses! God is mighty, but lenient to all. God’s power is shown in kindness and clemency, not in harshness and condemnation, and those who govern God’s people must govern in the same way, with kindness. This loving kindness and gentleness is not contrary to God’s might, but is a direct result of God’s primacy over all. Who are we, then, to judge what is in the hearts of our fellow Christians and all people, when God commands justice with love and clemency? Likewise, the Holy Spirit makes up for our ignorance of what we need, speaking in a language we do not yet understand. But God knows our needs before we do, understands the intercessions of the Spirit, and helps us in our weakness. This is our hope: God’s mercy, power, and love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — You taught your people that those who are just must likewise be kind (Wisdom 12:13, 16-19). Psalm — Lord, you are good and forgiving (Psalm 86). Second Reading — The Spirit comes to aid us in our weakness (Romans 8:26-27). Gospel — Jesus proposes parables to the crowds, teaching them of the reign of God (Matthew 13:24-43 [24-30]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International

The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997,

Jesus again immerses us in parables this Sunday. Last week it was the parable of the sower, with the well-known dispersal of seeds into inhospitable terrain, and the almost miraculous contrast when a seed finds rich soil. This time we hear a battery of parables with seeds again showing up, this time with weeds, or as a mustard seed, and then complemented by even smaller organisms, the yeast kneaded into dough. It's almost as puzzling as last Sunday as to why Jesus continues with parables for teaching. A week ago he explained to the Apostles that it was to deliberately prevent the hearers from understanding, because 'they have closed their eyes', 'they hear but do not listen', an ominous note that warns that we also could miss his message entirely. Today, the reason given is again from the Old Testament, drawing from Psalm 78: "He spoke to them only in parables, to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world. In this context the parable is a wisdom saying, a proverb, drawn from the wisdom literature of the Hebrew Scriptures. This indicates why our first reading today is taken from the book with that title, the Book of Wisdom. It's such a blessing that we get a chance to hear the sound of wisdom literature today, because it expands our insight into what our Faith is built upon. God's identity is revealed by his deeds, "And you taught your people . . . that those who are just must be kind; and you gave your children good ground for hope that you would permit repentance for their sins." Justice. Kindness. Hope. Repentance. We learn who Jesus is, what he is teaching us, by understanding the way in which he speaks to us. His deliberate choice of parables, a key into the heritage of Salvation, permits us to encounter what precedes the foundation of the world.

Jesús nuevamente nos sumerge en parábolas este

domingo.

bondadosos, y has dado a tus hijos un buen terreno

para la esperanza de que permitirías el

arrepentimiento por sus pecados".

Justicia. Amabilidad. Esperanza. Arrepentimiento.

mundo.
