O ne of the most striking aspects

of the gods of ancient peoples is that they in-spired fear. It’s a com-mon feature in these ancient dei-ties that they had to be avenged. They were a moody lot. So it was quite common for some enormous sacrifice to be made in order to appease them and prevent them from venting their spleen on those who were unfortu-nate enough to be their subjects and followers.

When Moses came back down the mountain it must have come as a relief to the Hebrews to find out what sort of God they had made a deal with. One who would keep them under his thumb or one who would let them grow?

P eople who don’t believe in God

often find it necessary to lampoon the God they

don’t believe in. So they invent a ludicrous image and then proceed to knock it down with either sarcasm or humour.

C hristians would probably be con-

tent with a God who as creator was responsible for the wonderful world we live in and for the gift of life that we all enjoy. If we could have a God who was also just and not given to flights of angry vengeance then that would be a bonus. To have a God who took time off from holding the

universe together and occasionally showed that he knew of our world’s existence would be like winning the lot-tery.

O f course, having a

God who was per-sonally interested in each of us would presumably be out of the question? Surely God has got more important things to do than be concerned about me as an individual with all my likes and dis-likes, my wants and needs?

S o when God speaks in to-

day’s scripture about shepherding his flock and taking care of them, and when Jesus feels sorry for his listeners and takes pity on them for they’re like sheep without a shepherd, what’s going on? Is it a lie? A joke? Or do I need to look again at the type of God we’ve got?

Next Weekend

Coffee Morning Today There will be Coffee Morning Today in

support of Alan’s Bike Challenge which is in aid of L’Arche.

Lands End to John O'Groats

The caravan is all packed and the van has my bikes and all my gear in so a quiet day on Saturday and then we're off on Sunday! if I can get

online I'll post daily progress on my online blog -'alanslejog.blogspot.co.uk' The page is called Alans End to End.

There is no shortage of 'Alans' who have done this and 'blogged' in the past but if you simply type 'alanslejog.blogspot.co.uk' in to your search engine that seems to find

mine!☺

'Alans' end to end is a play on words as it refers to two Alans. Myself and my friend of 40 years who is giving up two weeks of his life to drive the length of the country twice and act as back up! And so whilst I'm getting all the publicity for doing the pedalling bit this whole event simply wouldn't be possible without the support of friends and family and other people have been involved in just getting me this far and raising what I'm sure by the time you read this will be £3K for L'Arche!

Thank you all for your efforts and kind words of support, it has and will keep me going.

Alan Morris

Our Best Wishes and Prayers go with you Alan.

Thoughts for the week God loves each of us as if there

were only one of us. (St Augustine)

You can tell the size of your God by looking at the size of your

worry list. The longer your list, the smaller your God.

(Oliver Todd) There is no such thing as a lack of faith. We all have plenty of faith; it’s just that we have faith in the wrong things. We have faith in what can’t be done rather than what can be done. We have faith in lack rather than abundance; but there is no lack of faith. Faith is a law. (Eric Butterworth)
